"Some place their trust in warships, and some in weapons of destruction. But we remember the divine Emperor. They are brought down and fallen; but we are risen and victorious."
-Imperial Creed
Being a long time gamer in various RPGs I've always liked making my own settings and rules. This has also translated into my wargaming, especially 40k.
Now, for a long time the concept of the Frateris Militia has intrigued me. Now for those that aren't that much into the fluff and don't recognize the term, Frateris Militia was the armed arm of the Ecclesiarchy before the Age of Apostasy, but after the fall of Vandire the Ecclesiarchy was forbidden to hold "men under arms" (which lead to the loophole of the Sisters of Battle) and it was disbanded. Still, however in times of crisis masses still rally under the charismatic leaders of the church to repel invaders or similar.
Now, one way of doing this list would be combining WH, Guard and Witch Hunter Adversaries, but that is no fun (well, it is fun, but not as fun as this), so let's do our own instead.
Now first a throwout:
HQ
Kardinal Essentially like the apostate cardinal from the WH codex, although without psyker power. Could see other fun Faith and leadership abilities though. A fun thing would be letting them have access to pauldrons and a Crusader bodyguard unit, all with a Look Out- Aaaargh! rule.
Preachers I'll write them here, although I see them more as an option like Commissars. Pretty much identical to the IG preacher.
Troops
Fanatics The basic unit, essentially Conscripts but with Laspistol/CCW and Stubborn and no armor. Access to flamers.
Zealots Guardsmen equivalents with either shotgun, lasgun or laspist/ccw (any combo). Also access to flamers.
Elite
Redemptionists What ecclesiarchical army would be complete without our favorite red-clad fire-crazed lunatics. I envision them having a WS4 BS2 T4 I4 statline, as well as being Fearless, possibly even having fleet, FNP also possibility. Basic equip being laspistol/CCW or shotgun (any combo thereof) with ample possibility of flamers and eviscerators. No armor, but I can evision an "armor of contempt" 5+ inv.
Crusaders This unit is inspired by the Crusader warrior in the Inquisitor retinue. Essentially it is a unit of WS4 models armed with Power weapons equipped with 'pace and a 4+ inv save shield. Been considering to add giving them a pistol weapon as well (possibly baked into the shield).
Fast Attack
Mechanicals Now, what is more militia like than normal vehicles (say, pick up trucks) converted to lightly armed and armoured combat vehicles. AV 10 all over, armed with stubbers or storm bolters. Now, to make them a bit more useful what about giving them a small transport capacity which can be combined, ie, that a unit on ten models could embark on two different vehicles within the same squadron.
Azraelis Essentially crusaders with jump packs.
Redemptionist Bikers Inspired by the Kal Jericho comic, why not? Bikers are cool. Redemptionist bikers are cooler.
Heavy Support
Minotaur Since the Militia probably won't have access to any heavier vehicles they will probably have to rely on modifying other vehicles for eavy support. Now, since I envision the Chimera being one of the more common vehicles among PDF forces this would be a reasonable base. Essentially the first step is to up the tower weaponry to something Predator like, TL lascans and or A-can. Then comes raising AV, mainly this would be raising the side to 12, but I'm considering raising the front to 13 (for/against?).
In addition to this I see there being access to Guard troops, like for Inquistorial armies, but with a couple of changes. First, only needing a single platoon to start with, and no special characters. The following units is what I feel should be available:
Platoon
Company Command
Veteran
0-1 Hellhound Squadron, Rough Rider, Scout Sentinel or Armoured Sentinel Squadron
0-1 Leman Russ Battle Tank Squadron
What about Inquisitors? Well, since the Frateris Militia is forbidden Inquisitors are right out, however the Sisters of Battle shouldn't be, they are after all part of the same organisation and don't always follow their closely tied inquistor friend's biddings. Possbility to take would be one HQ, two Elite, Fast, Heavy and up to four Troops apart from the HQ and two Troops you have to take from the FM list. Also there should be at least as many Frateris Milita units as SoB units.
So, what does IGMB say? Am I completely crazy or just crazy enough to make this work?
