I see quite a few people using them, yet looking at their stats the are little more than ranged heavy flamers on tracks, which does not really seem worth all those points. Any comments on peoples experiances with them would be helpful Badger

I *love* my Hellhounds! Take a closer look at the rules they get for the Inferno Cannon. They get to place the flamer template, at any orientation and any range within 24". They then roll BS, but even if they miss everything even fractionally under the template is hit on a 4+. If you make the roll, every model the template touches is hit at S6 AP4. It can be VERY hard to spread a squad out enough that it isn't decimated by this- especially if your opponents haven't seen the weapon used before. Heck, they're like mortars, sometimes I just throw 'em in because the opponent hasn't seen them before and won't really know what to do Also, the opponent doesn't get a cover save against it, and don't forget that it can field some heavy bolter too... those never hurt to have!

While I have never used one myself, but both myself and my marines have been on the receiving end of one more the a few times. As Loinprevisto has stated, they can be very deadly if used correctly. Yes I still get armour saves, But hellhounds can make you take quite a few of them, and as you know, the more save you are forced to take, the more you fail....
I have a great deal of respect for this vehicle, and when playing marines with one or more of these sucka's on the table, I try to keep them at arms length....

or you could ask this question: Who doesn't use hellhounds? I don't, but I've got one better, a VCR vechical, Leman Russ base, but it has two inferno cannons and two heavy flamers.

Last time I used my Hellhound it ended up being used to shield my 2 of my HW from fire against an armoured company army...
I'd rather have 2 vehicles shooting at them rather than 3, and even though it was destroyed it stayed there (smoking and with lots of hole in it from the explosion) but was still shielding those HW that I really needed to survive.

Ugh, they're nasty. A pure nightmare if I'm running my orks, and even my marines like to keep them... well I was going to say at arms length to mimic Icehornet ( ) but then I realized that the longest range gun in my army is a multi-melta! I played against an opponent who fielded 2 the other day (psilophyte actually!) and he killed half a tac squad with one.

Yeah, but the multi-meltas soon remedied that problem.
The other thing about hellhounds is that they're very cheap. For me, they've never failed to make up their points cost, and usually account for 2-3 times their point cost.
Field as many as you can!

In short yes, especially against any armies with a 4+ armour save, you're wounding on a 2+ and there's no cover save, I just love seeing the faces on Eldar players when you trundle up and flame their Rangers or Pathfinders or what ever they are that normall get a +2 to the cover save and fry their backsides, it's worth it just for that, it's also cool in city fight to plonk it near a sewer, well within an inch of one if you can, to stop it being used and within 24" of another so that when the nid player, discourges his reserves through the sewer rat strategm, you again fry their backsides!! Allways makes me smile and undoubtedly you will make your points back at the very least and generaly more, although on occasions it can be quite a disaster, although these are few and far between.

Noob alert. I'm currently kiting out my mini's for CoD and once I have my troops and Sentinels in place I'm goin straight for three hellhounds. Clearly they rock in CoD, but how do people find they fare in normal W40k or Armageddon?

Well let me put it this way, if I could I would take an army of them. They are simply the best weapon to use for any army that has 4+ armour saves and awsome for forcing tons of saves on 2 and 3+ armour. Its not hard to cover 5 or 6 marines with the template and trust me they will fail alot of saves if you do that every turn.

Thanks cherub. I'm frequently facing Eldar, so I think Hellhounds are a must.

Thanks for the information, I had been putting off picking a Hellhound up because of the price tag on the box's side. This does go a long way woards making that tag seem worth it.

i might get a hellhound, i'm just wondering because i want alot of rough riders in my army and i have a sentinal squadron. i have a deviously cunning tactic for against my mate (who is going to collect chaos), he said he would charge them with a cheap expendable squad to charge them before they get to the termies (or any other dangerous unit he has), wasting their hunting lances, but if i have 2 squadrons i can keep the two close to each other, fooling my enemy into thinking they are i the same squad, so he charges one and the other runs off to charge the dangerous one, so my hunting lances arn't completely wasted. what do you think?

just make sure that when he charges his models don't come into contact with both squads. I'm not exactly sure on the ruling on that but I think that can happen and tie up both of them.

Nothing better against nids and fun to convert too. I almost always take one, even with spore mines on the board.
Best,
