Judging by other things I've seen with the Imperium, I'd say the actual feed is capable of accepting both a belt, and a drum, and the drum can be changed from both in and outside by a support sentinel with a loader/lifter arm.
Also, SM do carry extra ammo -- belt pouches.

Belt feed it on a tray. As I remember on the naval twin and M16 quad .5 machine gun the ammo boxes were over sized but extra belts could be linked and pulled up the feed tray My search fu was weak, but perhaps these will give you some ideas. M51 75mm Skysweeper www.youtube.com/watch?v=uXk7WMUq5Rc A M42 duster conversion for 40K Which is really a really cool conversion anyway, and here is a reference of the duster from google images: www.airsoftpacific.com/viewforum.php?f=58 Is a link to a airsoft forum, Killbucket has some notoriety for his custom build airsoft (I have one of his .50cals) Somewhere hidden in this are flexible feed chutes made out of plastic. The builds are cool anyway and he does sell stuff at airsharp.com

jeep: the skysweeper is interesting, there are an drum feed like the one mounted on the hydra nice film... The M42 conversion is cool too, it was my favorite tank in the time as I collecting vietnam war vehicles an planes. It is a great idea to do it in this way...but I prefer the skysweeper system. Thanks for posting that.... For changing the drum mags , there is an idea with an little handmoved crane on the upper side of the turret. First I collect the items to build up the base...I´d the trailer...the cog-wreath(I´don´t know, is this word the right one?) to move the turret from the inner side... and the four barrels are ready.... Referring back to the original question. The Hydra was designed by an idiot. Drum feeds and no ejection port? Probably the same one who designed the Phaeton LR tank. (no final drive) So much so that I'm now in the process of rearming my 40K Hydra with 2X 30mm Gatlings. The Gepard and the 2S6 Tunguska use NBC sealed feeds from inside the turret. Yes I agree with that....and the Tunguska is an very dangerous and fantastic weapon.... But I´ll use the drum feed because that is one of the typical points of the hydra....I´ve found very good reference pics from the skysweeper in the net (thanks to "jeep" for the idea with this weapon system) Pics like that. I´ll handle the heavy drum mags with an little crane, not effectiv in war action, but good for the show.... The reloadig of fixed drum mags like the skysweeper is´nt realistic, because the hydras 4 barreld system is too hungry.....and inside the turret is´nt the place for enough crew members to do this job... Sky sweep is now in "the fields of rust and sorrow" as I call it neglected at the Aberdeen proving ground museum. You MIGHT find more information in a gallery, but that ia awesome detail shot.

Actually, thinking about this. How about making the drum magazines a semi permanent fixture? I.E Reloading is done with individual rounds, remove the back plate, stick em in that way?
Would save a lot of hassle, not having to fart around with a crane. With a number of bods you could reload fairly rapidly.

Yes I thougt about this way too, is really the best way to work with this drums (for standard artillery crewmen, mean non-bionic ) I try change the completely closed turret system against an doorplate system on the back, which can turned in an ankle of 90° down( like the older style self propelled howitzers), for using as an plattform, here is some space to work and handle the reloading with two additional crew members. But the Hydra is not under complete protection in an close combat.....But for this, we will use the frags and the bayonet Greets Watts

Hi, followers of airdefence.....long time no posting from the project. But this year is the final year, made big steps with the hydra and try to close the project end of the year. I change the concept, the turret is manned by only one crewmember, but I´ll uses more control/ detail elements inside. The hydra would be not the standard guard AD-system, I do an air-transportable version for elysian drop troops, placed on one axled trailer, could be towed by tauros or similar vehicles. I finished the trailer last year(two details missing), working now on the turret itself. The turret drive for left/right move is ready, I use an modified winch(change the steel cable against chain).Works with an car battery. The outside drum mags in my new concept are only the armour piercing rounds, 11 rounds per gun. The anti-aircraft ammo (HE/ Frags) are stored inside, I´ll do later fake ammo feed covers inside(covering the winches and other parts) I lost some time cause I rework the whole trailer(sandblast all removed parts and get new paint. I do some tests about the question"how did the dimensions work" Here are some impressions from the last 6months... Testing the turntable Trailer ready The drive Dimensions , guns with turret frame Dimensions, turret covered with steel sheet, the cannons are moving free on the ringmounts, later there will be a second winch to move them up and down. And last week, test on the trailer with covered turret (checking the high measurements) PS....my project is called "skysweeper" since last year..;-) Regards Watts

That looks absolutely amazing. I love it! I'd still love to see your turret mounted on an eastern bloc tracked transport to get a feel for what a 'real' Hydra would look like. Just the turret is totally awesome though. Great work!

Watts, that might be one of the coolest things I've ever seen!
And back to the big question, it should be for the best if the Hydra was beltfed, but the models ain't...
And the Bofors 40mm can't be beltfed and have a mag containing 8 rounds. Shure, it can probably contain more, the mag is on the top of the gun and it uses gravity to reload

Working hard on the project, try to close it for an use in september. After some nervous brakedowns about my problem with the moving of the cannons up/down, three weeks of anger, installing two not perfect working systems, remove them... I had now an working speedy electrical driven hydraulic system on board.. www.flickr.com/photos/30305501@N06/6925149982/in/photostreamF..ck air superiority.....airdefence rules.... ;D

Far out... Bloody well done Watts! Hows it going with the rotation on the turn table trailer thing?
|
|
|
Post by ltericwatts on Apr 22, 2012 1:58:44 GMT -5
The rotation is the first version , driven by a electrical winch (12V) converted to chain drive. Its slow moving, but its ok for that, cause moving such a weight in high speed on a trailer, its not save enough I mean. The camera system for targeting works too, now...
