Ok Simply, who here finds at LEAST one tank a necessity for their armies?
Me, i find i'm always trying to cram at least 2 or 3 in my army! I always get slaughtered when i base my army off infantry(stormtroopers, vets, guard, special weapons galore, etc.) and when i go for max tanks with a few enginseers, and a conscript here and there i dominate the battle field.
This is me, but i wanted to know how many of you find at least one or two a necessity, and how many of you just charge out with hordes of guardsmen.

me. *raises hand* for all the experience with infantry I've had (years of tankless infantry battling), I did it with the knowledge that I would one day (once my infantry was painted) get tanks and add them to the list. my reason for avoiding tanks like the plague early on was that I recognized guard infantry as the weak link in the IG armylist and wanted to learn to be most vicious and deadly with even the weakest weapon in our arsenal. now that I have tanks, I devastate my enemy with my infantry while my armor soaks practically ALL incoming fire. I use 2 chimerae and a hellhound on one extreme flank (for a block of AV12) and on the other extreme flank I use a basilisk with 2 demolishers (great strategy - entice the enemy to get inside my 36" indirect fire dead zone only to get hit by a pair of demolishers!! also armor 13-14 makes for a great wall to protect my basilisk from taking fire - even if they kill the demolisher blocking LOS, it turns into invaluable terrain most all the time). the rest of my army is infantry, and I have ALOT of it, about 1500pts in pure unadulturated boots, flak jackets, and copies of the imperial infantrymans uplifting primer

Infantry all the way....sorry but, armour aint the way fer me so tanks aint a necessity fer me...the shear amount of men on the field is enough for me to handle most opponents

you're the man then! years of fighting with infantry only left me beaten and demoralized hehe. armor really balances the scales for me. if you're racking up a good score of wins, you should definately write an infantry tactica, trooper.

I agree with turtle, my army isn't as balanced with an all infantry, the tanks allow for me to play around with strategy and hit the enemy fast and really hard, i direct from a bassilisk can wipe almost any infantry unit clean (exluding terminater armor of course), that hard hit also morally hurts my enemy alot too, i can't tell you how many times my smurf freind has gone from very happy to very, very sad when his whole smurf squad gets wiped in one hit, with no armor saves at all.

those moments are so awesome if you're playing against a good sport. I'm not so much a fan of people who get all sulky and make you pay for winning by being a downer. God only knows I've taken innumerable beatings and only once or twice has my morale been so completely devistated that I surrendered mid battle heh. 95% of the time I'm there to just roll dice and have fun making the battle into a story - share some social time and figure out ways to graphically talk about how my guardsmen are being blown/ripped to bits in 1000 different gory detail laden ways hehe

I go without armour for most games under 1000pts.

I like a bit of armor in 1k - balanced forces for me. I did my time with infantry only, I like the soft cushy feel of having some armored support (though there are some times for infantry only armies like vs some eldar armies and perhaps tau)

I'll take a Demolisher in games as small as 500 points, so yes, one might assume I absolutely need armor, which I do.
Scares the hell outta my opponent and pie plates on gaunts...priceless.

My army is made up of about 600pts of tanks and 900pts of men. I haven`t tested the army out at the moment but I love painting and modeling tanks more than men. So I suppose tanks are a necessity for me, in a modeling way rather than a gaming way.

A Leman Russ is always nice, and I just played a mission today where the mobility of my armoured fist won me the game. I hopped them into their Chimera, sped 12" over to the other quarter, dropped 'em out on Turn 6 into a patch of cover and scraped a minor victory. It's accually the first time I've even really needed the mechanized infantry speed. Plus, 2 plasma cannons on a Demolisher... heheheheh...
