Hi everyone, I want to field a Griffon but my fellow club members argue they are 3rd Ed' tanks and cant be used now. Forge World still sells many of the older patterns and I think people think that its ok to field them because Forge World, unlike the main GW they rarely obey unit changes in updated Codexes. The Imperial Armour books have all the rules of the patterns but my impression was that this was for friendly games where bludging a rule or two doesn't matter. Would appreciate all opinions. Thanks, Karskin ;D

Current rule set does not include them in the codex. However, the rules are available in the Imperial Armor rules. So long as you have the rules and your opponent agrees to you fielding them you are able to play them in your army. Don't think you can play them in a tournament though.

Actually, the griffon is a 'legit' army choice for the IG. You are legally allowed to use it (in tournaments as well) with either the 3rd Ed. or Armoured Company rules in battles, tournamnets and all other events.

I purely base my statement on the fact that tournaments rules state current rules with current codexes. If you read the IA books they have within them that you can use the rules as long as your opponent agrees to it.
If we were able to use them all the time you can bet your backside I'd be kitting out all my heavy choices with Slick loads. First turn two shots from the russ and Bassie. Sweet.

When the 4th ed IG codex came out there was an article about it in WD. It said that the Griffon and LR Exterminator were dropped from the codex because of lack of space but they were both still game legal.

Great memory AddictiveWoz. Far be it for GW to actually complete a rules project. What would it had taken one extra page to the Codex? Perhaps, actually wording and editing the codex for errors. Lack of Space. LOL Not a surprising move on GW part.

Generally I think most of your friends and even casual players would allow you to use it unless they were especially bitchy, IG aren't really a powergaming army so many people allow you to field extra crap.

Their is also the IG AC list that you can get of the GW site.
not sure if the Griffon is on the list, just checking now...
indeed it is, as well as few of the other tanks that FW say you need IA books for the rules, such as the destroyer tank hunter.
looking at the rules for it. it looks like a good choice for the points. It has a fairly strong attack with a large blast. cold prob knock out out about a half dozen or so nids in a shot. though i have just noticed the laser destroyer... ouch! it basically a demolisher cannon with a dam good range!
just out of interest, I know we are not meant to post stats, but what about for things like this where the rules can be downloaded for free...

That sounds dashed unsportin' to me old boy, old 3ED and even some 2ED models are allowed onto the field of battle normally, even in tournament games.
If worst comes to the worst, just say it's from the AC list (which hasn't actually changed since 3ED).
Oh, and in answer to the title question of the thread, they normaly stand on branches in trees near their nests.
Chortle chortle...
Sorry about that.

No, they usually stand toward the rear of an army, prefferably behind a twenty-foot concrete wall.
