I am biased, My primary army for a long time is Salamanders, Of all the space marine chapters it, for a long time, since third edition was the most underpowered, As such you will find that That chapter has a draw of die hard fanatics that like good challenge. The biggest disadvantage to the chapter during this time period was a reduction to Initative 3, (this is gone now) but more damaging in my opinion was a reduction to 0-1 for each fast attack choice, So you really had no way to mass numbers in fast choices. To off set this the chapter used to have a slightly cheaper attack bike (worthless) Cheaper points cost for Terminators 37pts instead of 42 but these where limited to TH/SS, HVY F/ PF or PF/SB. The chapter also had access to cheaper war gear for characters, AND vet SGTs had full access to the war gear., a cheaper Chaplin that could change a crozius for a thunder hammer for free. Tanks had access to reinforced ceramite armor which ignored the second dice on melta weapons. In effect the disadvantages forced a different playing style that made them different than other chapters. During fourth edition, Anything Special that salamander had was either taken away or given to every other chapter, Now we did loose some of the "flaws" but big deal, The 4th edition codex disgruntled me enough that my focus became imperial guard, bought a Tau army that still is in its boxes and basically did NOT play 40K. I did not want to play marine in "codex ultra marines and had no desire to repaint three companies of Salamanders BLUE Towards the end of fourth edition I started a Dark Angles army that is now nearing completion. (funny that DA players are screaming codex rape now) A out growth of the inattention from Games Workshop is a LOT of those a fore mentioned die hard Salamander players have a strong following on The Bolter and Chainsword forum. So strong in fact as workshop is starting to pay a little more attention to the chapter. Some of those fanatical players had their screen names from that forum mentioned as characters in the new black library book SALAMANDER. The Chapter in 5th edition is still a little too "codex" but the chapter still has its own flavor and a increasingly rich back ground. No longer saddled with HORRIBLE chapter traits, the list is a little more viable now. I still lament the loss of some of the thing I liked about the old Armageddon Codex especially my 85pt Chaplin of master crafted thunder hammer doom with artificer armor paired with a vet sgt also with master crafted thunder hammer (Batman and Robin) riding around in a rhino with a tac squad with two flamers. Or Storm bolter armed vet sgts with signums in my dev squads. All of which are gone now. In effect, some of the "special" has been taken away, some of the challenge is gone to in 5th edition. But the following is great (I have never met a Salamander play I did not like or was not a great game, the same can not be said about cheese wolfs can it? Both Legions have great back grounds but Salamanders are a little less popular and that also makes them special, especially since Workshop gives the chapter the shaft** at every turn, (black skin and red eyes INDEED!) These are old photos of my Salamanders (1998-2000 or so) ** Examples of the chapter being given the shaft. Salamanders were originally one of the big six chapters, No longer Salamanders were originally dark angles green, they jacked our paint scheme. Salamanders have LOST every battle report in white dwarf. Repeatedly Nurfed by rules And yet we endure.
