So, my primary Army is an Armageddon Steel Legion IG Army. (I actually looked around and bought Armageddon Steel Legion minis, converting as necessary.)
I want to make a SM Army as no one in my little playing circle has one.
I'm choosing between Space Wolves and Salamanders.
I like the Space Wolves' ability to deploy in the opposing zone, I can see infinite fun with that.
I also like the Salamanders because of the fluff of how the Salamanders and Armageddon have hard ons for each other and all flamers and meltas being twin linked. I had originally wanted to do a Salamanders army because I liked the idea of a scorched earth kind of army -- I went with Armageddon because I liked their fluff better -- probably not the best reason to pick one Army over another but I love my Steel Legion.
I thought maybe I could do a drop troop Army with my Salamanders so I could sort of deploy them in the opposing zone; I don't know the specific differences between how the Space Wolves do it and how other chapters do it; I don't have a copy of the Space Wolves codex so I may be totally off base.
So yeah, there's the dilemma I'm in right now. I know I can't field my IG with SM unless I'm playing an Apocalypse game and I don't see that happening at least for another year.
Space Wolves or Salamanders, what should I go with?

Templars! Erm, sorry, they would be awesome and go well with a steel legion army, but that's beside the point. If you want to wait for a bit, I think space wolves will get a new dex rather soon, and you can make your choice then when you have the rules you'll have to live with for a long while. I'd recommend the wolves just because of their awesomeness. However, if you run a drop troop army you really should check out the templars, they're absolutely devastating in an assault with 2 cc weapons and are just as involved in armageddon as the steel legion (they actually got their start in codex:armageddon a long time ago). I would advise waiting and checking out the templars. Just my 2 cents, feel free to ignore the templars if you want, but I really wouldn't decide until the new space wolves dex comes out.

I would go with Salamanders, personally. I like their fluff, both with them fighting on Armageddon as well as the fluff for their chapter in general, and Vulkan He'Stan is pretty nuts. That said, they're pretty much vanilla Marines unless you take him.
I personally think Space Wolves look very silly, but they're a decent choice, and they are getting a new Codex in October. They certainly have a more unique flavor, and are fairly different from Vanilla Marines.
I vote Sallies, but both are decent options.

Depends on wether you want blacksmiths-- IN SPACE! or vikings-- IN SPACE!. They do play differently though.

Vikings- IN SPACE! Personally, I love the fluff for the Space Wolves (Ironically, I hate the fluff for Dark Angels), but I'd also say wait until their new codex comes out.

Thanks for the replies! I may end up going with both, lol I usually get most of my models from a particular auction website (am I allowed to type it's name?) and apparently I've won much more than I need. It's good to know the new Codex will be out in October. I must admit, though, vikings in space is quite a selling point

Wolves! Salamanders look stupid, black skin and red eyes? Your Honor, the case of "Who looks More Stupid", I would like to enter Exhibit A, "Captain Top Knot", into evidence. The Prosecution rests Reds

I say Salamanders. It's a cool, pretty unusual chapter with great fluff. While I personally love Space Wolves, playing something that just got a new codex is a bit bland, as it's almost guaranteed to be kind of overpowered and played by snotty kids. But that's just me and my general dislike for anything anyone else plays or does.

I'd deffintley say Salamanders. From what I remember, they had some cool fluff. But the biggest reason, is they arn't space pups.
I dislike all marine chapters that get their own codex.

I would wait until SW codex is out. After checking it up I would decide.
Personally I am all in for DA offspring chapters. I like monks in space.

I thought Salamanders had their own codex........? Why do you dislike Chapters that get their own codex? Is it because that's a physical piece of evidence that they had more attention on them? (Just curious)

Salamanders do not have their own codex. And I dislike them, because Imperial Guard Regiments do not get their own Codex, Ork Clans do not get their own Codex. So why should marine chapters?

Because with Marine Chapters there are large differences between the Codex ones and the non-Codex ones (except DA nowadays who are pretty much a Codex chapter just with a slight twist, not like they used to be.)
Blood Angels heavily emphasize assault, which does not have the Guilliman seal of approval.
Black Templars heavily emphasize assault and have different unit choices and breakdowns.
Space Wolves (you guessed it) heavily emphasize assault and their Great Company organization is much different.
They can also make more money that way by requiring you to buy the different chapters dexes.
(These are just basic breakdowns)
I vote for Sallies though, their strengths in close range firefights would be much more complimentary to fighting beside Steel Legion, as they wouldn't deny targets like an assault oriented force will. And who doesn't love Hestan?

If you ever get a chance to field both armies together, definitely go with Salamanders. Given the vast amount of melta and flamer weapons that an IG army can bring to bear (at least mine does), Vulkan's bonuses would be too sweet to pass up.
That said, the very first mini I painted 15 years ago when I got into this hobby was a Space Wolf marine. Of course, then I quickly fell into the throes of Slaanesh, but I've always wanted to go back to the Space Vikings. I'll probably be one of those flavor of the month folks that start up Space Wolves when the new codex drops. I'm already buying up transports and drop pods.

Salamanders! Green and black armour rules. Plus they are more dependable than Beastiality specialists who run around with their Wives......er wolves, yelling "For the Immortal Dog Emporer!" Just kidding please don't yell

For sure Space Wolves. I mean come on, they are the only Chapter to have fought on Armageddon 3 times and have fought more battle than slamanders. Plus our Primarch didnt get owned during the Heresy, Wolves dished it out on more then one of there fellow legions. But back to the point, Wolves have always fought for the people of Armageddon more so then those convoy protecting lizards.
