OK i've been putting this off for some time now, but i've finally decided to sit down and write it. I've been using this strategy for about 3-4 months now and i've had a lot of success. The only time i've not won with it was against a Dark Angels player, but that was close. If i'd have killed one more terminator it would have been a draw, but enough sidetracking.
Aim: The aim of this tactic is quite simple. To get two squads of stormtroopers into the enemies deploymeny zone by turn 2.
****************************************************
Equipment: What i would call the essentials are as follows;
5 x stormtroopers with hellguns
1 x stormtrooper sergeant with ccw/hellpistol
2 x stormtroopers with plasmaguns
Chimera + hull veay bolter, extra armour and smoke
5 x stormtroopers with hellguns
1 x stormtrooper sergeant with ccw/hellpistol
2 x stormtroopers with meltaguns
Chimera + hull veay bolter, extra armour and smoke
Leman Russ + hull heavy bolter, sponson heavy bolters and smoke
Basilisk + Indirect fire
The extra armour on the chimeras is to keep them moving. I choose stormtroopers instead of armoured first squads for 3 reasons. One is they have a better armour save should their transport be hit, very handy and the new transport rules can be crippling. Second, better shooting stats. Third they can have 2 special weapons. You can tailor this to taste but this is what i think is the most effective. To complement this i would suggest a lot of infantry to soak up firepower and dish it out but that is up to you.
****************************************************
Deployment: When it comes to deployment you must deploy your basilisk on the opposite flank to where you intend to deploy your chimeras and leman russ. I deploy my basilisk first. The enemy will try to get within it's minimum range as soon as possible so he will deploy most of his force/as much as he can, in front of your basilisk leaving his other flank a little more vulnerable.
When it comes to deploying your chimeras they go on the extreme flank opposite your basilisk and your leman russ goes right next to them, as seen in the figure below.
H_______________________________________________OXX
H = basilisk
O = leman russ
X = chimera
Note: Your chimeras and leman russ want to be as close to the edge of your deployment zone as possible so you can close quickly with the enemy.
The idea of setting up this way is that the side armour of you first chimera is protected by the board edge and the second chimera. The side armour of your second chimera is protected by your first chimera and your leman russ. This creates an all round armour block of AV 12, with leman russ front armour being AV 14 of course.
****************************************************
Execution: On the first turn rush your leman russ and chimeras forward 12" while staying in formation* and pop smoke. Don't worry about not being able to fire your battle cannon, it's only 1 turn of shooting it's going to miss. Your opponent should respond to this in 2 ways either throw everything he has at your armoured columns or ignore it. If he splits his fire then you've got him where you want him. He's unsure about what to do and you have the initiative. Most decent players will pour everything that they can at you, but they will not have enough firepower on that side of the board given the positioning of your basilisk. And what does hit can only glance anyway.
At the start of the next turn your leman russ has done its job and if it's still there and capable of firing it should lay down a hail of fire to support the stormtroopers adavnce. The chimeras will then race ahead 12" and deploy there deadly cargo. Rapid firing stormtroopers anyone? Sometimes you may lose a chimera or have it immobolised, in that case you just have to push on regardless. If he targetted your chimeras it's usually for the sake of something else, i.e the leman russ.
* i realise it may be hard to stay in formation given terrain and the like. If there are buildings there then use them to protect your side armour, but remember to stay in formation as much as is possible. Use terrain to your advantage where possible, but keep moving. I think this part is the most difficult phase of the plan but with experience you'll get the hang of it. There's not much more i can say about it because every battlefield is different.
Thanks for reading this and if you have any questions, comments and criticisms then please reply.
If i feel like i've missed anything i'll add it later
