I prefer t the lasguns, mainly for fluff but also because they are rapid fire and when 50 conscripts are in range of their target and rapid fire, well those lasguns will do more than just give the enemy a major seizure.

Lasguns and bajonets are too nice and fluffy... And Lasguns are my only effective weapon vs. Terminators and other "big things" ;D

Meh, I try to use as many Heavy Weapons in my squads now, mainly missile launchers because they are good against some armour and infantry. I've never had the chance to use shotguns yet, they dont seem practical I mean by the time the guardsmen are in range they might as well be thrown in the dead pile automatically because they wont last too long in close combat against many enemies.

If I get the choice between attacking in CC or being attacked I'll choose the attacking. Firstly the enemy loses his bonus attack for charging that way and with a bit of luck my guardsmen will die in his turn and his squad is in rapid fire range of my whole army then

knights got it right on that one. I had to sacrifice my special weapon squad with demo charge the other day to hold up a melee for just long enough to retreat and set up my guns and the worst part is that a whole squad of striking scorpions (I was facing eldar) was just coming around the edge of the forest - I coulda had a sweeeeet shot with that s8 ap2 pie plate and smoked em all but I had to do the neccessary thing and throw my squad into the fight just to stall it long enough. when the melee broke I killed every eldar that was there standing over the corpses of the guardsmen I sacrificed in one volley though. every last one except the stupid farseer that dodged like a billion kill shots .. oh well, my commander stuck him in the back a couple times with a powersword a few turns later

What is an auto-gun? was that in the old codex?

An autogun is like an automatic rifle. Pretty useless against anything aside from your fellow guardsmen and some weaker enemies. Its like, a lasgun...sorta.

Rulewise its a standard lasgun, but nowerdays its only important in Necromunda or if you want to convert your army a bit

I think an auto-gun would be put next to useless, if facing chaos space marines, marines or anything with battle hardened armour for that matter. Las-guns are what we need!!! i would choose shotguns however for hardened veterans. Any veteran squad who has the job of infiltrating up into no man's land deserves close quarter protection. Shotguns being assault 2 give double the amount of firepower, and because it is an assault weapon, i think that gives them the ability to charge and still get that bonus attack (correct me if im wrong)

Autoguns are actually better, as if your anything like the murderous buggers my army are (fluff-wise). they cause bleeding, and, hypotheticly can be loaded with nasty toxins and the like..... Plus the whole massed fire thing is coolerif you can here this whole wall of noise rather than pttt-pttt-pttt that lasguns have. But its shotguns for me.

I just wish standard infantry had access to hellguns, but then again every guard player does!

If the standard weapons for IG would be Hellguns I'd sell all my IG and join Chaos with everything. The crappy equipment is what makes IG so much fun to play with

I use the Grenadier list. Oh, and knight the hellgun is still very crap, it's not much better than a lasgun.

/me smashes Mabus down to an inch with the Imperial Guard Codex.
I play IG long enough now, and just beccause my set allegiance is CSM doesn't mean I don't know about the IG equipment. I know what stats the Hellgun got and that it got a targeter. But that doesn't change that I like grenadiers/stormtroopers very much. The Kasrkin minis are great, but I don't really like the rules and that every idiot is using deepstriking 5 man stormi squads with 2 meltaguns... /me wipes the cheese dripping from the display

Shotguns, meh, same stats as lasgun, except it's assualt, and the others rapid fire, so it gets 1 shot at 24"

Not completely the same. The shotgun only has half the range of the Lasgun/Autogun
