My friend plays dark angels and I cannot seem to find a way to stop him, and suggestions for an army list. He has a large army so he can pretty much tailor it to whatever he wants.

What type of army does he ussually use against you? If he tailors it for speed and assault, invest in some Ogryns for counter assault and lots of close range, high AP weapons. If all else fails, shear numbers can drag anything down. Try to take assaults away from him, denying him the extra dice and any speacial attacks he migh get. If he likes to try and out shoot you... you play guard. Get some nice big tanks. Battle cannons can be just about the worst enemy of a marine player. Use a Leman Russ or two supported by infantry to block some of the nasty anti tank stuff marines can dish out and play it smart. No matter how many times you get insulted for it, keeping a tank in cover to block a lascannon shot can win you the game in the long run. Most importantly, learn from your past mistakes. If you use a lot of tanks and lose with that army list often, try using almost no tanks next time. If you use a particular heavy weapon almost exclusivly, try some new ones. A good tactician has an open mind. Hope some of this helps,
-Ben

play him on 2 or more fronts.. i also have issues againest DAs due to their speed more than anything..
have a couple nice big pie plate causing tanks in front to deal with his land speeders and bikers.. demolishers work wonders here..
have deep strikers to jump in from behind him with plasma and melta guns.. this can deal with any real tank threats he has or even terminators thanks to the AP2/1 ratings on these guns..
ogryns for counter charge are good.. stormtroopers with a powerfist are almost as good.. so long as you charge him..
HQ.. just shoot it to all hell with everything.. do not get into close combat with it.. and if it is in a transport then kill that transport, entangling them.. then rapid fire them back to the stone age.. if they get into close combat you are doomed.. doomed i say ... DOOOOMMMMMMED...
everything else shouldnt pose a problem as these really are the main points of smurfs and DAs.. just make sure to change it up on him.. smurfs do not believe that IG can be a fast assault army.. so show them you are not stuck in buildings and such.. be more mobile.. and if he is going to play the sit back and wait game.. we can do it better..
hope this helps better than good dice rolling..
cheers

I would haave to say take lots of plasma rifle and or meltas for their AP. A good heavy weapon option to take is the Autocannon, nice range, great str, but the AP on it still isnt good enough to kill a marine unfortunetly, so need some luck on that one but two shots so thats good chances. Also... use tanks.. Battle Tanks, the AP is a killer to SMs and its an Ordnance Template so its a squad killer at that. And use your infantry as meat shields to keep your tanks from taking lascannon or missle fire, unless you can get a nice snug hulldown behind a hill or building. Goodluck mate

DA are shooty marines and that new 'ignore cover save' whirlwind ordinance round is really scary, but keep to cover, saturate one unit with massed fire until it's dead then move on to the next. expect to see alot of bloody pulped guardsmen in your lines, DA bring about the fiercest shooty fight to the field of any loyalist marine chapter. watch out for speeders, but this is where sticking in the cover pays because those land speeder tornadoes don't hurt quite as much. max your heavy weapon loadouts. take heavy weapon squads wherever you can, if he spreads out, hit him with krak missiles, if he bunches up, hit him with frag missiles - frags kill! overpower him with sheer volume of long range heavy weapon fire. that's where you'll win, not with lasguns. you need to crush him with high strength weapon fire - introduce him to your glee as you need 2's or 3's to wound with mass amounts of weapon fire. if you take sents, take cheap sents, multilaser sents rock, they're cheap and have high volume of fire and high strength shots - that's all you need. force him to make 3+ saves by the bucketload. sharpshooters is a key. if you're going to have a shootout then shoot well! buff your ballistic skill, it'll pay. especially with massed heavy weapon concentrations - you get a battery of 9 heavy bolter shots rerolling 1's every round and you'll see how quickly that 10pt sharpshooter investment starts to make returns for you in the point department. good luck! DA are a tough fight, but can be a really fun one - not often that you don't find yourself buried by the enemy assaulting you with almost every unit he/she has
