I have 7 infantry squads equiped with 2 lascannons, 3 heavy bolters, 1 assault cannon and 1 missle launcher. i also have 2 sentinels right now with 2 heavy flamers but im gonna change them to lascannons. i also have a demolisher, and a regular leman russ. ive got 3 command platoons and they each have a lascannon with a medic. I have no idea how to setup my guys. if someone would draw a labelled diagram to show how i should setup that would be great!

You could devide your force into 2 equal parts. If you deploy on a length, put your 2 parts at the opposite to have your opponent choose which part to strike first which will give you more time to fire at him!! Even if you have the half of your troops destroyed, you still have the other one to hold and kill the remaining of your opponent squads.

It depends on what size table you use and what the mission is.

well we usually play the regular 4 by 6 foot table sometimes maybe a couple inches shorter and we either usaully play 2 on 2 or 1 on 1 battles

Well my normal tactic is to set up as far back as possible and blast away with heavy weapons then move squads up one at a time. Simple but it works.

deployment largely depends on terrain and whether or not you're playing a mission or just fighting to see who's still standing when the dust clears.

Turtleboy is right. Deployment relies on mission and terrain. It also goes with how you play your army if you play defensivly or offensivly.

Think of it like chess. This is a wargame, so you want any advantage you can get. If you want to sit back and shoot, set up so you have likely lanes of advance covered. Get anti tank guns where they can shoot tanks. Make your enemy have two choices: A-move and try to find somewhere safer, or B- get shot to death where he stands.
If you are liekly to advance, set up to counter the above statement. Secure safer lanes of advance. Make your enemy have to move to properly fight you.
Applying to both of these, USE THE TERRAIN TO YOUR ADVANTAGE. If bottlenecks are presented, try to funnel your opponent into them, ECT.
Hope some of this helps. And if you really want diagrams, I might be able to do that for you.

Yes, I LOVE bottlenecks. I usually try to set up, even if it means sacrificing a tank or two, so that my enemy has to fight across 2 fronts, and my weakest front will be in a bottleneck where shooting can happen...But the conscripts make it almost impossible to get past the first line for HtH

set up a firing line with 5 squads to prevent any more orks from getting into cc....use the other 2 squads to engage with the remaining orks in cc to get rid of em quick. use ure tanks as a flanking manouvre, depending on where they are at first...this diverts his attention to ure tanks...thus giving ure sentinels and troops space/time/advantage or whatever...cause hell havta divert soe of his forces agenst ure flankin tanks....haha ok lol....thats what i would have done....but hehe since ure prob done with the battle...tell us how it went anyways

infiltrate them on an open flank, so if a unit gets pinned, theyre staring a load of lusgun barrelss. or position them so u can easily shoot at the more elite troops. That usually annoys people when theyre pride and joy are stuck at their starting positions

well my battle went like this he closed in at me from the sides(still shooting me from the middle with his looted ig tank) so i ran with the guys that i had left to the middle but that ended in a few turns. so all his guys formed a big army of a whole lot of guys. luckily he forgot about my tank that was right behind him so i started shooting the crud out of him with the battle tank (even if it scattered away there would have scattered into some other guys).i had a little satisfaction until he came at me with his battle tank. he won with 1 tank and around 33 guys to spare. i think i lost because of how i set up my guys, but thanks anyway for the help with setting up any ways. well like i always say can't win em' all. also if you guys could do a diagram like i asked i would greatly enjoy it! ;D
