Im just starting a new army, and its still relativly small (roughly 1000pts) lately ive been day dreaming about raining death from above with a mortar heavy weapon support squad. Are they worth the pionts or should i find sumthing else???

I've never used them as I play mainly against marines. They'd be good against swarm armies like 'Nids or forces with weak armour - Eldar.

Yeah against swarms you'll do double damage to bases, so well worth it. Against marines I find they aren't all that useful, altho in a game when I was using marines, they seemed to do really well lol. Personnally I love mortars, IG are the only ones that can take them, and when you get hits and start placing templates where you want them, they can be really damaging. Like most things IG, 1 squad may not be enough. I've played a game with 2 squads and they pretty much wiped out a squad of Dark Reapers in heavy cover (pinning them on their first turn . I haven't tried them as sinlge mortars in a squad yet, didn't seem worth it to me with out the multiple shots.

Mortars are good against horde armies with mass ranked troops...and less against marines!! I do think they are funny to play!

yeah i did figure that against eldar they would be useful as well cos of low T, and how most eldar squads are relativly small, and the pinning is a good bonus

they are a worthy and cheap investment. Perfect when you are fighting in an open wasteland or in a tightly packed city. ;D

I'm planning on adding a mortar squad.
my buddy tore me up pretty good with a mortar squad in a cityfight we had a while back - a couple 'hits' can prove to be really nasty!
as above mentioned, they're awesome vs swarms like rippers or scarabs especially.

1st game i had testing my morters, ends up bing a darkangle termie armie, so my mortars didnt do much damage, then got slaughtered a chaplin deepstriked right next to me. very painfull to watch indeed ( my entire army killed 2 of the gits in the end )

ouch!!
yeah, ap2 weapons and demo charges make the world a better place against the deathwing hehe.
mortars would definately be a liability vs deathwing. I'd give them some time though, play a dozen battles with them as an initial 'test period' - heck, that might not even be enough time to get a good feel for them.

i hav two mortar squads and thru my exp. agenst orks, theyr pretty useful, esp wen those ork mobs are uge and hav no transport. theyr ok agenst tau, depending on the amount of kroot and tau fire warriors of course. hwvr agesnt anything else...they pretty much just rain a hell lot of frag bursting, strength4 AP6 shells. try em out tho! its werth a try

against my cousins Tau, my mortar squads are invaluable, just for the pinning tests they create! if i can make his three fire warrior squads heads down, (two from mortar squads and 1 from snipers) then it means my guys can move closer without gettin shot at!!! ads

what do you have to accomplish to make them take a pinning test? Just wound?

No, has to be a casualty.

there has to be a casualty, but with taus low toughness, i nearly always roll half of the rolls needed to make him take the saves ads

I love mortars and they are good against all armies if you have your list set up right. For me my current list has no tanks but lots of auto cannons and missle launchers plus 3 mortars. This is good because most armies dont spread out until they are hit with the 5 frag missles and 3 mortars. Or they dont move so they can fire their heavy weapons which allows me to do it again. Especially marines, its not always about the ap but about how many saves you make your opponent take each turn, plus you can pin. Mortars are good at this and you can hide them away behind cover, so they fairly safe from enemy fire.
