Hi everyone,
I'm considering buying the Vet shotgun forgeworld upgrade and am wondering are shotguns on Vets a good option. The forgeworld upgrades are irrasistable.
When i come back to common sense, shotguns range is the same as a bolters rapidfire range. And with Vets poor armour saves that cant be good.
(don't post stats - Woz)

but the extra BS IS good....infiltrate them and place them in cover...plus they count as assault weapons so u can still charge aftr firing if ure on the offensive...add some special weapons in ure vets as well to add some extra punch , that makes it worth it

vets with shotguns are the melee build. if you want to do shotguns, then make sure the sgt. has a powerfist. it's one of the hidden (pun intended) melee strengths of the IG army that's not obvious on first pass to most. move shoot assault DESTROY WITH POWERFIST ATTACKS...oppenent says 'what? I just lost in melee vs guard??? morale check??? vs. guard??? *confused look*' yes..it's goodstuff

I dunno. It seems a waste to buy veterans and the waste they're good BS4 by charging, but to each his own.

priests are advisors, so you'll have to have a priest in every command squad first but after you've got your command squads hooked up then you can put priests in any unit.

good combination, defininitly should be used against low armour armies i.e-eldar, tau, other guard, and the like

I'm kitting out two Veteran Squads with shotguns as I frequently face eldar and their pesky Assault Shurikens. The assault weapon allows you to move and fire with impunity, helping to counteract the problem of being a largely stationary mini guard force. Subsequently I take 2 grenade launchers, a missile launcher (for that hammer blow when/if they make their position), and a "house rules" sapper with an ordinance satchel. That way I can move and get off 18 shots a turn, while still having enough terrying firepower to deter the advance of any tanks.
Can't wait to take my boys for spin in city fight.

PS: I'm building my vets from Catachan's (for that particular John Rambo look) and some simple snipping of the catachan lasgun barrel and battery pack give it a particularly awesome duel barrelled shotgun. I'm also considering the addition of a storm bolter for the Veteran Sergeants, as a 24" range assault weapon - nice! Now how do I make bandoliers for ammo...

Lasguns are better than shoties, as, is you don't move, than you get one less shot but twice the range with the lasgun, and, they have the same range with both guns and they have the same range and no. of shots if you move them, and you can still assualt, unless you use one less shot/ double range for the lasgun

Hmmm, lasguns - yeah... but you CAN have lasguns for all the Guardsmen in your platoon that you MUST take - according to the codex. You'll see how great lasguns at when you meet up against shuriken catapults. Your choices are EITHER move and fire once to 12" or stay still and fire either once to 24" or twice at 12". An assault weapon like the shotgun allows you to move AND fire twice at 12", oh AND then you can charge as well. This is why they are called ASSAULT weapons. (Note to self - withdraw fangs, venom dripping!) Shurikens and Storm bolters can really rip up your front line. Hence why I'm going with Grenade Launcher, Shotguns and Storm Bolters (move, fire twice to 24") - lovely jubbly!

Unfortunately I think not. I've haven't got the rulebook with me right now so I can't check for sure. Either I'm right, or my brothers been cheating with his shooty Eldar for a month - quite probable.

The other option I quite fancied was a rough riders squad armed with shotguns to go cowboy on the enemies ass. 6" move plus fleet of hoof (D6) plus shoot twice at 12". That's the problem with Eldar - that's the stats for a basic Eldar guardian with a shuriken catapult(except the hoof part, they have feet), which makes them more effective on the front foot.. hoof.. sorry foot.

Erm our lasguns can: Stand still shoot 24" Move and shoot twice on 12" That is called rapid fire and works since the 4th edition even after moving (note that we're going to get the 5th edition this year...)
People who fired rapid fire weapons can't assault, only pistols which shot once and and assault weapons may be used for assaulting in the same turn. Only exception to that are terminators (loyal and chaos) and Chaos Obliterators who may always charge regardless what weapon they fired

An infantry model armed with a rapid fire weapon can shoot twice at targets up to 12" away.
If an infantry model has not moved, it may instead fire once at targets over 12" away, up to its maximum distance.
Arggghhh... my bastard brother is a cheating swine! Assault weapons my arse. Rack up the flashlights boys - we're gonna toast some Eldar. So Lasguns can fire twice to 12" regardless of movement or fire once at 24" if stationary.
The only advantage of a shotgun, is that you can charge post assault shooting. Which is handy for "Hardened Fighter" hardened vets but otherwise useless... Hmm rethink in order.
