After having my 9 tanks in my army all completly destroyed by turn 5 practically every game i play against Tau, i'm begining to wonder if Broadsides were designed to be the bane of IG armour.
I've tried Vets loaded up with meltas and plasma guns, stormtroopers and massed heavy weapons fire but NOTHING KILLS THEM! They blow you up at long range at if you get close they smart missile you to death what can i do?
Thanks,
Karskin

umm, ogryns anyone?
basically just get a big tough squad of ogryns or something good in close combat either in a tank, deepstriked or hiding behind meatshields until you get close enough to bash the S*** out of them with pointy sticks and clubs
or maybe try basilisks or something i dont know my suggestions were just the logical thing to do, i havent tested it out but oh well.

deepstrike 5 vets with 3 meltas and a plasme pistol behind it.. light it up like the 4th of july in texas.. Then roll your tanks in to clean up after the deepstrikers die the second turn they arrive..

Deep strike!! Become a drop trooper!!! More seriously, some deep striking vets or storm troopers could be a good thing agaisnt broadsides (they diserve well their name!) and any Tau in general. As they rely on fire power, drop next to them and barbecue, shot and so on!!!

Okay, as primarily a Tau player i'll give you a couple of tips. The most typical deployment of broadsides is a pair of XV88's one of wihich is a Team Leader both with Advanced Stabilisation System, the Team leader with have a Drone Controler with a pair of Shield Drones some people go with SMS others with Plasma rifle being as the victims are guard i'm going to assume that they have SMS.
So going on this set up, you'll need to be able to get a high number of AP2 shots, strength 8 to autokill the 88's if you manage to get 3 wounding hits, other wise you'll cause 1 to the broadsides. So, a demolisher cannon shell will take them all out, of cause getting the shell to hit (Or be fired at all) is the difficult thing. SO deep striking Vets with Plasma Guns/ Pistols could do it (Storm Troopers can do it if your not wanting to go with Drop Troops), just remember to Torrent of Fire the Team leader and the "remove whole models" thus if you get to kill an 88 it will be the team Leader that goes taking the Drones with it.

Thanks everyone. I like shockwaves tactics but the problem is that my opponent takes 2 BS's as seperate heavy support choices and he always deploys them on opposite sides of the board in heavy cover. I might try a suicide deep striking squad of Vets loaded up with plasma guns/pistols though they probably will onlt ever to shoot once and with 3 plasma guns rapid firing you are almost guaranteed to get at least one overheat.
Thanks,
Karskin

Karskin....ever thought of infiltrating ure entire army? take the light infantry...which gives u advantage....u will know where he will set up his forces giving u tactical advantage. Veterans infilatrate fer free so arm those boyz with some hard hitting meltas and take down them broadsides

2 teams of 1 ?? With or without Drones??
Either way it makes your life easier, a team of 3 Lascannons (or with guard Bs two teams) 2 turns of fire at a Broadside should drop it (You might get lucky with 1 turn of fire), park a Chimera to block Pulse Rifle fire, or a Sentinel.
Remember that you can force a target priority check so that he doesn't put a rail gun shot through a sentinel.

Sorry for any confusion Shockwave. I meant to say that there is 2 teams of 1 and both have shield drones, advanced stabilzation system etc. Thanks.

Ok so it is a bit more annoying!! Deep strike and kill them until they are dead with stormies and/ or vets with plasma guns/melta guns!!! Maybe some rough riders with hunting lance can have a chance, use covers and then charge!!! with all these energetic attacks in CC, the broadside won't like it!

Now with that set up he has made it a little easier for you. My previous post still stands. As a side note, were you aware that 1 XV 88 has only slighty more then a 1 in 6 chance of kiiling a Russ from the front? Also, force those Target priority checks, Ld 8 does fail from time to time. Granted a Railgun will make a mess of that Sentinel but, better that then a Russ eh?

What! A 1 in 6 chance, how do you work that out. They hit on 3+ which gives them a 66.6 reacurring chance of hitting and there rail guns are twin linked. Then you have a 50% chance of penetrating and another 50% of killing (25% chance so far) it. So you have a 35.6% chance of actually Killing a Leman Russ.

Bs 3 with a re-roll is 75% half that to get a Penetrating hit (37.5%) half again to get a destruction (18.75%) as i said slighty more then 1 in 6.
88's can't have Targetting Array AND Advanced Stabilisation System. It's one or the other.

I would use lascannon AT squads as my primary broadside killer, backed up by a basilisk (yes they still get their armor save, but a) the drones will likely take some damage and b ) if the suit fails (from a likely torrent of fire) then it is instakilled). if you're having issues with LOS blocking terrain, use vehicles to block LOS to the basilisk - it works remarkably well since destroyed vehicles are still LOS blocking. since broadsides sit back and shoot, shell them with the basilisk to start working on the drones - the lascannons should have an easier time of finishing up and moving on to other things. the thought is: if I shoot them with my lascannon batteries, I will probably NOT score 3 hits and force a torrent of fire which would enable me to pick the command broadside, so I can shoot at the thing with my lascannons which are able to negate its armor but I'll still be hitting shield drones so it doesnt matter. since it doesn't matter, why not hit it with a bassy round that actually MIGHT force a torrent of fire and kill everything in one hit from that AND also will force shield drone saves anyway THEN hit it with my lascannons after reducing the shield drones (hopefully to 0 left). that's when 1 battery of lascannons will do the trick (though 2 is always better with the IG). just my thoughts on the matter. discard them if they're retarded

Ok here comes some MathsHammer, (Was hoping to leave it off this board. Hey Ho)
To hit and wound with all three Lascannons (Without Sharpshooter) is 7.14% (Less then 1% higher with Sharpshooter)
To get a torrent of fire on the unit would require a direct hit (Assuming a accurate guess if indirect) and would have to wound all three (18 ish%) to then fail that 2+ save drops it down to 3.14%
So if your trying to get the Team Leader with 1 unit firing, go with the 3 Lascannons.
