Hey I haven't played 40k since 4th came out and all this terrain scares me. I have only played fantasy the last 4 years and so once again, terrain, very scary. With all the cover saves now and fire lanes being shortened how do you guys recommend dealing with armies that we really need to get solid round or two of shooting on(tyranids, rush armies etc). I know this question is kinda confusing and I thank you for any replies you can come up with.
Basically how do we deal with the loads of terrain blocking and limiting our firing range.

Well altough my lackof city fight experience might not seem promising just trust me on this one.
use concripts to drag your oponents out in the open and then attack with lightning speed one squad at a time. remember if they get a hold on you run away. That is just about the only help I can give you except collect Tau. But I never would under all sercumstanses.

Get into higher ground. Taking control of a hill gives a great vantage point. Basically, rush armies ahve to get to you, and to do that they're gonna havte to eventually charge towards you wether they like it or not. You're job is basically to get as much effective firepower as possible in the first 2 turns to try and weaken their transport, fast units etc. Stay in forest, climb hills or simply stay behind something because those things are needed to ensure you hold out against the eventual close combat

well remember that terrain can be used to help you as well. lets take a look at the battle of Thermopley(sp?). The spartans used the terrain against the enemy to funnel them into a small path where numbers would be useless.
just get you vehicles to plug any gaps that you dont want the nids coming through and force them to rush into a tiny area where your big guns can take them out with mass fire power.

Flamers are very useful in high-terrain areas, and that's not just because they ignore cover saves altogether (although that is a great factor). They are great for what was mentioned in the post above (when your enemy is compacted in small areas). Also, if your opponent is not dumb enough to get his troops packed together and flamed, then you can use flamers as exelent deterents to get his troops where you want them..
