I was reviewing my DKoK Apoc list and was thinking about how juicy of targets the Gorgons will be when I load them up with Infantry being lumbering vehicles. The Gorgons are not really all that fragile. As a matter of fact, they are actually tougher than a Baneblade.
The advantages that make them so tough are the following (going according to Apoc rules).
Things you can add to make them more survivable.
Then I thought to myself, with the Heavy Mortars, you can take a special shell type in addition to the normal HE. If you take smoke, you can instead of firing at the enemy, give one friendly unit within range a 5+ cover save. For vehicles, it counts as if they used smoke launchers (ie, all hits are glancing). Now the drawback is, if they count as using smoke launchers, then they cant fire their own weapons. So, the idea is, when you start your Gorgons (or other high value transport) across the open, sacrifice two Heavy Mortar shots a round for the equivilant of smoke launchers each turn. This will almost certainly ensure your Gorgons/transports get to where you want them to drop off the kids to play.
This tactic will also work for Infantry foot assaults as well, however, it will only protect one squad per Mortar so its less effective. But, placed on the appropriate units (ie, Grenadiers, a unit that just arrived in the open via deepstrike, etc) could mean the difference between them geting wiped out or getting another round of fire.

- AV14 Front and Sides
- Armored prow negates hits from the front on a 4+.
- They have 3 structure points.
- They are Super Heavy vehicles and roll on the Super Heavy damage chart.
Things you can add to make them more survivable.
- Smoke Launchers.
- Track Guards.
- Extra Armor
