vet is 6pts, vox is 5pts plus 25pts for the master vox in the command hq. unless you have a Ld9 officer vet sgts are the way to go in my opinion. if you have a heroic senior officer then the vet sgts do lose alot of luster. 1pt for a boltgun isn't a bad alternative to a storm bolter and goes well with a plasma gun since they're both rapid fire.

Yeah but people like to kit their vets for CC, and I really like the idea of a sarge with a power sword, so i'm scared i'll splurge. And yes I go the LD9

unfortunately vet. sgts. can't take powerweapons only shooty options for our sarges. if you're Ld9 then I wouldnt even recommend taking vet. sgts. unless you want some insurance vs. opponents who try to snipe officers or if you're taking 'em for fluff reasons.

I always take them. An army runs on its NCOs. I used to run vox casters but my command squad always got shot up by the time my squads needed leadership, usually around turn 3. Fluff wise i think it fits as i play Catachan and have a high number of vets, deathworld and all.
Edit: should also mention that my vet sarges boltgun has also downed a land speeder.

hah nice. yeah I use veteran sgts. too because my army has been thru the meatgrinder and survived a few campaigns now so it's got a worn gritty survivors type feel to it. my army doesnt have any of that 'oh yeah the 81st cadian armored company is supporting us' no, my company has the 'yeah after the last campaign we helped the salvage crews clean up the wreckage littered across the countryside for a few months and they gave us a couple reconditioned chimerae and a shipment of repair parts big enough to keep them working thru our next campaign' type deal. I definately had to include veteran sgts. just out of principal with my army

Anything to keep those dirty grunts fighting for a few more turns. the leadership is worth it!

I do use vet sergeants because I find them fun!!! I explain, you have +1 ld, which is nice, a guy who can take some equipment (stormbolter or plasma pistol and so on) and it is very fluffy!!! I have a company of Elysian Rangers, these guys are all veterans, I think it is appropriate to have them led by a vet.

yep, I love veteran sgts. they're so cheap and even if they have a boltgun/pistol and that's all it's still an advantage. the leadership takes the cake for me though. it makes me stop stressing about having my command squads wiped out by a player and gives me a psychological warfare card to play vs my opponent. when I say 'oh yeah my officers are Ld8 and can convey that but they don't even need to because all my squads have veteran sgts so are already Ld8' then it makes my enemy think my inconspicuous command squads are that much less of a threat, when in fact they have the iron discipline and power weapons that add the spine to my army.

A vet. sgt. with a bolter is 1 point cheaper than a guardsman armed with a grenade launcher. But he contribute with a weapon that is better at dealing with infantry, a higher LD and an extra attack in CC.
The downside is that the squad can't deal with for example Rhinos and Dreadnoughts.

I'm a fan of a heavy and special weapon as mandatory per squad (unless you go with an overabundance of heavy weapon squads and heavyweapon-less platoons for the whole move and overwatch strategy) so if I do a veteran sergeant, it's in addition to the heavy/special in a squad.

It depends on how much points I have. But I see your point in bringing as much heavy/special fire power you can.

I think vet sergants should be allowed to take powerweapons. GW made a huge foul up with that. (Or maybe its a conspiracy to subtly cripple imperial guard, so we lose in their battlereports). Without powerweapons, vet sargents will always be worthless to me

imagine how much we'd kick arse with power weapons. Aaaah, For the good old days, when we had Griffons (before they took them away too) LREXT and the ability to cower behind our own men.
Tis all a conspiracy!
