I think an IG movie would have to be one of a few things a) Saving Private Ryan in space b) Band of Brothers in space in 2 1/2 hours c) Any other movie that involves GIs in a hostile war-environ I'm only saying this because it is very hard to make a Guard movie without it becoming one of these things. I'd say that the story would have to be cookie cutter war movie but with laser guns, or it wouldn't sell beyond 40k fans. Yes a GW IG movie will probably turn out like this but it would be a travesty, and IG movie is only an IG movie if A) everyone dies. B) the war is never won. EDIT: The closest thing I have found in the current media that fits this is the game DEFCON (everyone gets nuked) or Aliens vs. Predator from the Aliens point of view looking at the colonial marines as food

"And the greatest of these are the Ultramarines..." Yawn. Fanwankery is all this is gonna be. I'm hoping it means 'most successful' when it says 'greatest' (they are the source of the majority of the Marine Gene Seed) I'm not convinced it will be wankery of the fan variety or any other variety really. The voice characters are good respectable actors (not B movie/poo movie actors), it has Dan Abnett (who, although not my favourite writer, knows what he's doing 40k wise), and the general impression is that they are well aware that making a balls up will likely result in massed rioting and people (such as RT and myself) burning them for Heresy. I'm going to remain open minded till I've actually seen the film - Avatar was supposed to be awesome (and wasn't) according to hype. The proof is in the eating...

Bah, it was a decent movie (avatar). No awards for originality.

If Dan Abnett's script work is anything like his books then it should be a decent movie.

If Dan Abnett's script work is anything like his books then it should be a freaking 100 per cent epic as F*** movie. Fixed.

I still haven't read his Durham Red revamp, so I can't yet comment on how awesome his comic script work is yet.

Actually, upon rereading some of the GG books, I'm not exactly hopeful for Abnett's ability to carry a movie with his writing. He's great at making the action scenes seem very real with his writing (something which won't matter in a movie), and in the GG books most of his inter-character dialog is good, but his themes are....well, they leave a lot to be desired. He writes the Ghosts like they're Space Marines, and writes most of the Guard like their stereotypes; incompetent leaders, mediocre troops, constant internal bickering, and the need for lots of manpower to do anything right.
I'm just dubious because his greatest strength (describing action) is negated by the medium of the Movie, so he's going to have to rely on the plot and characters to bring the story through, areas where he's hit or miss at best.
Top it off with the fact that Ultramarines have already been flogged to death in terms of publicity, and, well...I'll pass.

The proof is in the burning... Fixed. And if Abnett writes the Ghosts like they're marines, and he writes marines (Brothers of the Snake) like they're gods, then he's got some modicum of credentials. The trick in writing this is that a single movie isn't long enough to make an uninitiated view appreciate the magnificence of the 40K universe. You're throwing the poor sap into a grimdark galaxy of war, following the exploits of (hopefully) a squad of space marines (which, if he's watching this without already being a 40K person, he's watching it because he's already familiar with the concept - so no points for originality), and there's just not enough that you can shove into 120 minutes to make the guy care about what's going on while also developing the setting. But you know... it's okay. I've come to realize that the average viewer has, over the past 10 - 15 years, lost a great deal of intelligence and viewer savvy. Nobody cares about such outdated concepts as "plot" or "character development" anymore. George Lucas killed those things, and everyone else said, "Hey, the prequel trilogies sold pretty well; let's just cram as much action and special effects in there as we can, move the plot along as fast as we can, and the viewer will never notice what a crappy movie this was." And Michael Bay stood up and said, "That what I've BEEN saying." The end.

And then a .303 round took Mr Bay in the throat.

But Req, as far as I was aware it's not going to be a "cinema" release is it? WHich means it's more likely to be DVD releases, which are going to be bought by people who are aware of 40k - so I'm hoping they won't give much time over to having to explain the whole universe/Space Marine/etc.
At least, that's what I'm hoping for...
Reds: I see your point regarding your concerns over Abnetts ability to write a script for film compared to his book writing skills (the two don't overlap well, so it's a very valid concern), but, other than giving the basic idea of the plot and being there to ensure (hopefully) that the feel of the film is right for 40k, I think he's more going to be an advisor rather than writing the whole thing. I may well be wrong, but that would or should quell those fears...

The animation in the teaser sort of made me cringe a little...I hope they polish it up some more before it is released.

If you are going to skip a Warhammer 40,000 film simply because it is starring Ultramarines than you must not be as big a 40k fan as I am.
I'll watch this movie(more than likely buy it.)
despite shoddy animation, a horrible script, and whatever else might be wrong with it. (unconfirmed speculation mind you.)
Yep, I'm a sucker.

Irrespective of how good it is compared to other films, I think we have a duty to at least see it once... especially if we're going to slate it. But then again, I liked the terrible short films they did for Games Days (around 15 years ago) - so I'm well up for this

I'll see the movie even if it's. SM movie and not IG with the same reason I bought Dawn Of War II. It's 40k and I hope they show some IG in it. But still, it's 40k.

that animation was poor. why don't they just make the film like the opening cutscenes to their games, the ones that look real nice?

Was that all? Meh, worthless trailer. I'll probably watch it if I don't have to pay anything for it (that includes drive space on my computer).
