I'll defend Aliens and Starship Troopers. Aliens for being the first sci-fi/horror I'd ever seen, that film changed my life. Starship Troopers for being plain ol bug smashing fun with no strings attached.
Avatar...
hype probably killed it for many...
I thought it was ok.
Lots of fancy visuals... a story that appeals to teenage girls.(who go back and watch the movie a dozen times...)
Another James Cameron box office hit!

I prefer Alien to Aliens. Even though Aliens had this Imperial Guard VS Genestealer thing going on, you just can't beat a film about a bunch of scientists running away from a vicious monster, trapped on their own ship.

They weren't even scientists. It was a bunch of space truckers who had no idea what they'd unleashed on the universe.

They were idiots! The guy had a face hugger laying eggs into him and the rest just had dinner with him when the face hugger fell off and died.

Some people get all worked up over how they slaughtered the source material...
I haven't read the book, so that doesn't really matter to me.
I've painted many a squad with the sounds of Starship Troopers playing in the background...

Also? If you don't like Starship Troopers, you don't like Imperial Guard. I didnt like the Starship Troopers movie, but I loved the book. But in the book the Mobile Infantry are more like Marines than Guardsmen. Now, i enjoyed the Starship Troopers movie as an okay sci-fi bug hunt, but hated it as Starship Troopers, as it wasnt even close. To all of you who have not read the book, you need, it is wonderful.

It's supposed to be a classic book, but I haven't read it, either.
The Running Man book (Stephen King/ Richard Bachman) was totally different to the movie in every way.

Also? If you don't like Starship Troopers, you don't like Imperial Guard. Correction: If you don't like Starship Troopers, you don't like pathetic idiot Guard a la 14 hours. The movie, that is, I never got around to reading the book, but from the synposis it would seem more Space Marine oriented that Guard.

I've seen the first film, it was okay. The love story kind of annoyed me though. Love stories should be either:
A: Believable
B: Lesbian
Have to agree with RT that you don't have to like idiot-Guard to play the team, the reason I play them at all is because you can make virtually everything with it.

there should not have been a love story in Starship Troopers
A) DIZ WAS A GUY!!!!!!!
B) Carmen was just Ricos friend, nothing more.
Oh and spoilier alert:
Carl dies in the book, Ricos dad survives Buenos Ares, they forgot about the 3rd race from the book "the skinnies" They dont deploy via dropship.

Also? If you don't like Starship Troopers, you don't like Imperial Guard. Ouch i didnt like the Starship Troopers movie, and I love guard to death. And to the people talking about the ST book i have not read it and i bet i would like it more. I think it'd be safer to say: If you dont like Imperial Guard black library books, or the fluff in the codex, then you dont like Imperial Guard.

If you don't like little plastic army men and war games to play with them, then you don't like IG.

I agree with Requiem. Almost all the BL and codex IG fluff is kind of retarded. But that's me, I dislike epicness and idiocy. I like what you can do what the codex though, and what I did with it.

Marneus - turn the 'n' upside-down, and extend the line: it's now a 'y.' 'Eus' is 'sue' backwards... Marneus is Mary Sue. he will win the award hands down... siged

I think an IG movie would have to be one of a few things a) Saving Private Ryan in space b) Band of Brothers in space in 2 1/2 hours c) Any other movie that involves GIs in a hostile war-environ I'm only saying this because it is very hard to make a Guard movie without it becoming one of these things. I'd say that the story would have to be cookie cutter war movie but with laser guns, or it wouldn't sell beyond 40k fans. People who don't know 40k aren't going to see a 40k movie with deep rich fluff and enjoy it. It would have to be something they can relate too. I mean look at this new Robin Hood movie, I don't plan on seeing it. But it just looks like Gladiator but with trees and bows. Its hard to create something new when you have a millennium of stories behind it. Nothing is original anymore, because it has all been done. A Guard movie, the story of a draftee Guardsman who gets thrust into combat as a White Shield (Enemy at the Gates) and manages to make it through a horrendous close quarters combat against some Xenos because Marines/Tanks/Stormtroopers show up and save the day (War story classic) he lives and gets put in a squad and gets sent back to fight traitors on his homeworld (slightly original I'd say) and then time passes a few years into it and he is still alive, his friends all dead (All Quiet on the Western Front) and the Imperial Guard forces are trapped in some Hive city surrounded by chaos forces and traitors (take your pick) the battle begins and Blood Angels zoom in via StormRavens, Dante playing guitar on his flying land raider (love that picture) they help the Guard defend against the attack and they drive the Traitors away (againt, you name it) But then it turns out a rogue Inquisitor, secretly siding with the traitors, brands the Guard and Blood Angels fighting on the planet as Heretics and orders an Exterminatus. So the Blood Angels plan on destroying the Inquisitor's ship before he can nuke the planet, while the surviving Guard fight to recapture the most sacred relics of the Emperor from the Traitors. The Guard take overwhelming casualties but press on or else the Imperium will view them as Heretics. The Blood Angels succeed in dealing with the Inquisitor but a few of the nuke-thingys are launched and we see our main character fighting and on the horizon a missile hits the planet and a cloud of green death goo approaches. The Guardsman reaches the relic site and plants a flag yelling "I die for the God-Emperor!" and a wave of death goo splashes over the battlefield mulching our Guardsman and everyone else. The Blood Angels return to see the devastation, but they see the Flag of the Imperium hoisted on the relic site and they take the remains of our hero and have him honored as a noble warhero and the movie would close as the Bell of Lost Souls in Terra ringing over and over and the camera pans away showing the massiveness of Terra and we see ships, and servo-skulls, and cherubs, movie ends. ....I kinda started getting a little excited there at the end...maybe I should write a Guard movie?

Although I think a Guard movie could work (regardless of the 'generic soldiers in space' issues) it would certainly have to be done a long while after we've had a couple (or more) of the more 'extremely 40k' (marines etc) armies done. More likely that Guard would be brought in on the sidelines I suspect. We'll just have to stick to Novels (which are probably better anyway )

Honestly, I haven't seen Avatar yet either. But the fact that it is top selling movie of all time (or at least one of them) tells me that a soldiers in space could work, people would pay money to see it, if done right. Yes Hurt Locker won more awards, but Avatar made more money. I enjoyed all the Starship Trooper movies. I enjoyed the first before I got into IG. After playing IG, I enjoyed them even more. It reminds me of IG vs Nids. Starship Troopers 2 reminds me of Col Shafer and The Last Chancers. I love the opening part with them on that hill. The guy with the flag adds a nice IG touch.

Meh...Avatar...nothing more to say on it than what has been stated. The Ultramarines Movie looks promising so far though. And if there were to be an IG movie, it would have to be about Gaunt's Ghost.

I really wasn't overly impressed by Avatar - entertaining throw away film I suppose, but I felt it severely lacked a convincing storyline and the effects weren't all I expected (though I didn't watch it in "3D"). Suppose I should have avoided the hype...
