Are the Commissars worth having in an army? I'm not sure I mean they always end up dead the way infantry goes. And how many is too many?

I always take a commissar just to help me out in close combat. I give him a power fist and close combat weapon and because he's not an independent character he cannot be targetted. Also it gets a laugh when he executes my officer. I only take one though as i can't spare the points. The trick is to sit them in cover and use as a counter assault unit, otherwise they die too easily.

I agree with madman on that. They're excellent in counter assault units and give you HSO a nice Ld value of 10 which is usable with the Master-Vox. And commissars are really great models/fun to convert and they're so fluffy

Umm... I'm afraid you can't use the improved leadership value with your voxes... the FAQ shot that one down. It only applies to models with 12 inches of the command squad.
However, Commies are great at giving a squad a bit more punch, and if you go the independant commie route, they're great with a squad of conscripts to back them up. Then you get a leadership 10 conscript squad that can reroll morale... They don't break.

Well not in the German version than. German FAQ 4.0 about Ld, commies and voxes - if a commie is in a HQ unit (platoon or regimental) the Ld bonus with the officer's Ld special rule - Iron Discipline and Trademark items don't work via vox - if a commie joins a unit that has no officer or sarge, the commie will execute a soldier before the unit passes it's Ld test - independent commies add +1 to Ld only to officers Ld value not the sargeants nothing about the modified Ld value and a vox. and afaik there is no newer FAQ and 4.0 is the only one I could find since I started. and I haven't found it in an english FAQ till now... Edit: just looked in the FAQ 4.0.1 on the US GW site and I found nothing about that and to be honest it would'nt make sense. If you have a commie behind you just waiting to shoot you with his boltpistol why you should only encourage the squads that are close to your location and not the ones you only have contact with via the vox? The commie will shoot you if you fail and not only if the units fail close to you. It's called 'overall success' or something like that

I thought the commisar worked with the Vox caster because he becomes the new leader of the unit and the vox says uses the leaders Leadership roll.

normally the commie should be able to use the vox. even a sarge may use it when he has the highest Ld value or you want to use it.
but we're talking about through the commie modified Ld value of the HSO.

The +1 modifier that the commissar offers can only be used by the squad he is in. It quite clearly states that in the commissar rules. We ran over this about 2 weeks ago but i can't find the thread, prehaps Turtleboy can help?
But basically only officers can project their leadership through a vox caster. Both sergeants and commissars are not officers so they cannot use a vox. Look under the vox-caster rules in the IG armoury for this bit.

I love commisars, I use them in my more inportant independent units. Like when my AT armored fists sqauds start to get shaken the commisar steps in and re-takes command. It realy helps if you are against an army that uses morale rather than full front damage. my friend plays eldar and has alot of snipers, he misses often but it still makes my gaurd crap themselves.

Yeah, I like the commissars for the way they keep the men from going frantic but sometimes I wonder if its worth it if the Commissar pelts my sergeant in the face.

I used to have at least 3 commissars. But I have made a change. It's called "Die hards". I just took the points I used on the commissars and gave all my troopers die hards. I think that's much better and it works very good for me.

Commissars are great. I just think that Die Hards + Iron Di are better. And together with a standard you have a unit that don't need +1 Ld. I use a Regimental Standard because I send my guardsmen into CC very, very often. Plus it's in CC Die Hards better than the commissar.

I still use them because they look pleasing to the eyes and are kind of like fluffyness to my army.

The fluff is reason enough to use a unit.

well I won't send them all away. I still need one for my HSO for fluffy reasons. Can't stand that poor officer alone again the 'evil' inquisitor and her retinue of Sisters of Battle but the others...

Unless you count them Independant Commissars, they still do good though.
