I am thinking of making a Veteran Squad from my pack of catachans. But to be honest i don't really know the major differences. Would it be worth it? I was think just a ten man squad.
And any tips on how to make em look kick ass? I might try my hand at making them berets cos the ones i've seen here look pretty sweet. anyhoo thats all.

Well, as for if they are good, they do benifit from the higher BS, and they are also allowed 3 special weapons instead of the normal 1 and also may take plasma and melta guns, personally i think you could either go for vets or stormtroopers, all depends and if u want the 1 more special weapon or the better armor save, either way they are a benifit.

One of th things i did with my vets is i got ahold of some heads from the fantacy range with the beards and moustaches. It makes them look like they have been in the feild for a long time setting up or they are so crazy that no one wants to tell them to clean up...
i also gave them special things like boot knives or skulls too to show they are long time campaigners.I really like using vets in my army, the 3 special weapons/1 heavy and the ability for the sgt to take things from the armoury is a bonus, XXXXXXXXX to hit and infiltrate make them fearsome oponents.

My vets of nuttyness hit the table just last week. I gave the squad all shotguns, 3 Grenade launchers, and the Sgt with a powers fist/plasma pistol combo and the honors that give him a heroic secior officer stat line. As infiltrators they were great and were in a wonderful position to support assaults by rough riders. The GL's were versitile and with lacking a heavy weapon my opponints often neglected to fire at a unit armed with shotguns. Inside of 12 inches they were deadly and worked well with the uber sgt sporting a XXXXXXXX weapon and power fist for the up and close combat. To be fair I do have to point out the times when I was short on range and thus failed to engage. If not supported quickly by fast movers (rough riders or Armored fist) they tend to become victims. The key is a combination of misdirection and offering targets of oportunity. What I like to call the "Shiney object" stratagy. Make sure you opponint feels they your unit is not worth their time. No melta guns or heavy weapons is the start to this. Second make sure you point out jokingly how retarded and/or gay your power fists are compaired to theirs (a marines usually) seeing as how you "Paid XX pts for a power fist that does not even hit at XX". They usually become a lot less afraid and dismiss you if they do not have to worry about instant death. Thats my 2 cents on Vets. The shotguns are just fun to play with. The only things you have to remember about them in the end is this. Do not support them, have them support something. Second is that you must press the rule of weapon range when you fire. With only 12" range, if you kill off the 3 guys at 11" and the rest of them are outside of 12 then that is a guarantee you will not be assaulted by them next turn (usually letting them move in or letting you move in and slicing off sections). The cool thing about this is that if you move so that ONLY the other units heavy weapon, character, or some odd thing is in range. THAT is the model that takes all the hits and wounds are delt to the section in range not from where you opponint choices. Cheers (dont post stats - Woz)

nice sound tactics there bftbg.I like the use of talking down your squad, i do it all the time and people are starting to get used to it so i am having to change tactics on it.

i ussally give my vets 3 flamers as this makes them great for infiltrating and removing enemy in terrian (which is annoying when try to shoot them). as for taking only 8 better take 10 there guardsmen with added bs after all and are often going to targeted but then agian if the enemy shoots them your heavy weapons will be shoting for longer. ;D

Take 8 as a min but I have fielded only 5 before just to have a XXX lascannon for XX pts. The shotgun thing is great but I always feel a bit like a cheese hound when I "slice off" a section of an unit. The game is fun but using a rule to beat someone as opposed to skill is different. Then again a lot of people seem to field large amounts of cheese in tourny play and my little shot gun tactic is useful to cut off/out heavy weapons and leaders.
Cheers

I also like to take just 5 vets with a (dont post stats - Woz) Lascannon. You get to infiltrate it so just postion it to knock out that armor piece that has you worried. They become a target with the lascannon though.

i think that isn't a good idea, rattlings can handle themselfs, especially in a good cover (they can get REALLY good cover saves due to the "low to ground" rule) your vets should be used for more offensive purposes, especialy since they all have shotguns.

You cant go wrong with Veterans, they rock and the modelling potentials are enormous. Only downside is that they earn a massive elevation in your opponents target list. Camoline upgrade does wonders.

Well, the most simple thing to do is to cut off the tip of the lasguns, the hard way is to model it using green stuff, but unless you are like a master at the stuff, i woulden't recomend that, you could also look through army bits, most likely any imperial amry bits and you may find an actual shotgun model or a weapon very similar to it.

I just chopped down the catachan las gun. I've seen better more complicated ways, but mine was easy enough and distinctive enough. I'll post pics.

Cut off the barrel, but more importantly cut off the sight on the top, to giv the rag - tag feel to the gun

I like the chopped off barrel (but only chop off the big part of the barrel end - leave the narrow length that connects to the weapon stock). I call them 'scatter lases' (same game effect as a shotgun, just las technology - no focusing lense at the end of the barrel so the beam shoots out in a cone instead as a focused shot - reduced max range, increased area of effect. seems plausible to me.)
