ok so, if you do decide to take conscripts, do you really not care what number is in the squad, or are the only really effective at their max of 50 guys? and i just just noticed that missspell in the title

I was logging in to ask something along the lines you have here. I have a 1000pt game/tourney coming up next month and I was toying with the idea of a 50 man conscript squad with 5 auto cannons in the mix. They would be sitting near my 10LD command squad so they would have some staying powers but at 300 pts it comes down to ARE THEY WORTH IT. I am looking for feedback and to hear if giving grenade launchers to them were worth it as well.
Cheers

Well, i usually only use 50 if anything, anything less in my opinion is not enough when it come to conscripts, so if you have the points get all 50, if not save your points and buy better things.
As for the nade launchers, i have found flamers to work better for them seeing as you don't need to use their BS to hit targets, which with conscripts haveing the worst aim in the imperial, this worked out well.

sounds good .found.I have been using them in 30's with flamers and heavy bolters.i pack them all in a building or some place in cover near my officer and let them practice shooting.I use the heavy bolter just becouse of the rate of fire,i was thinking about going to G.L.'s for the range becouse anything that gets close enough to my gun babies will usually kill them pretty quick.
I'll add a few more squads and see how it works.

i voted the 50...fer 200 points its a fine deal...and id go with the colonel on the flamer idea...works really well in close confrontations where the use of flamers and like 45 lasguns does a heck lotta damage...

As yet I have only every taken squads of 20. I don't have enough IG for more ATM lol. Even 20 work fairly well. I used 1 squad as a screen to stop an advancing ork hoard in one game and it worked very well. I gave them flamers that game as u don't have to roll to hit, but tbh, they just got charged before they got chance to do any thing. As a meat sheild against assault I find them great, but doesn't help against incoming fire . Last time I took them I only took 20 guys and no upgrades. TBH I don't think it worked too well. No one bothered shooting at them cos they weren't really a threat. Having said that, it did keep alot of eldar not wanting to get out of their tanks tho cos they were scared of gettting bogged down and over run lol. Next time I deffo want to add some heavy weapons. Either H bolters, or Auto cannons. Max shots possible to counter that poor BS, but that would actually make them more of a threat so people would have to target them.

50 all the way and bossed around by an indepenent commissar. That brings you a lot of fun for you and your opponent will hate it

Well, first off you can not have ten max, it's actually 20 minimum, and no guardsmen boxes do not include heavy weapons platforms.

However, you can pick up a box of 20 Cadians and a Cadian heavy weapon squad box. Gives you 26 soldiers between the two and the main box gets you flamers and GLs while you get all the heavies in the HW box.

I like 20 man conscript platoons - they've worked well for me on a pretty continuous level. I've never tried a 30, 40 or 50 man platoon, but have never felt the need to try them as the 20 man always does well.
20 man conscript platoons are one of the strong points in IG infantry, and often pull their weight or more (which for IG infantry is saying alot). 50 man platoons seem like a hassle to move and alot to bet on one morale roll (and alot to lose if you're playing vs a savy player who knows to trim out your nearby command squads then say tank shock the conscripts with a skimmer or something nasty and fast.

Well, i will usually go for everything or nothing, but if i do take a conscript squad they usually do not get pushed back too often, 1st thing is it is hard to kill 25% of them in one turn, tank shock is a possibilty, but also if i take conscripts i take independant commissars, lead by a 10 ld dedicated maniac, they make the perfect "meat shield" as people say, and in rapid fire range, 100 shots + commissar bolt pistol (even with the horrid aim of conscripts) can do some good damage to even a 10 man smurf squad.
