Basically how the title is. How does that chimera stand up? What are your experiences with them?

They either withstand a punishing amount of antitank fire and survive to the end of the game, or they get blowed up by about turn 3 or so.

If the dice gods don't hate you, the chimeras w/ the new 'dex should be the first rung on the ladder of success. It's a subjective thing though... do you like shooty death aimed out of the hatch at your foes? Or would you rather they walked (or flew if you get a valk/vendetta). It's a risk/reward subjective thing, I should say. It also depends upon whether you want to use them as a lure for AT fire and mak a bold move w/ other tanks. Turn it into risk/reward for your opponent.

The survivability of these vehicles, depends on two thingsw: What you have, and what your opponant has. If you are running your chimeras as part of a Tread head list where you have 4 chimeras, three Fast Attack Tanks, and 6 Leman Russ', you can take to the bank that even if you have something REALLY NASTY in those chimera's, they're gonna be ignored for AT LEAST the first 2 turns. after that, it kinda depends on how things have gone, but my money's on them sticking around for a long time longer. If, on the other hand, you are running them as the only armor in the list, ( i've seen it done), you can ussually kiss them good-bye, as all those meltas and lascannons don't have anything else to do.

I like the chimera over EVER other Imperial and alien transport for the following reasons, and I'm refering to the new dex here: - firing ports for FIVE soldiers from within, making it a moving pill box of heavy bolters, autocannons, or whatever else you decide to put in it - Decent armour in the front means that going directly at an enemy of, lets say: SMurfs - means that only their plasma gun (melta if close) and special weapon of S6 or above can damage it. Also, AV10 isn't bad, sure, it's the worst of the bunch, but you can get lucky - Free smoke and searchlight. That's a HUGE bonus for our previously expensive and unupgraded tanks! - It packs the meanest punch out of any Imperial transport, Land Raider not counting because that's not it primary role - a multi-laser, a heavy bolter, plus a heavy stubber, and anyone firing from inside (pretend an infantry squad with a GL and a heavy bolter) means 16 shots froma single transport - 6 heavy bolter shells, 3 multi-laser bolts, 3 .50 cal stubber rounds, a frag or krak grenade, and 3 lasgun shots. It's evil! - The mobile command vehicle, in our new codex, allows us to issue order from our officer even when inside the chimera. That is immensly beneficial for keeping our commanders alive and in command - It's amphibious. A vehicle that's amphibious is automatically cool in my book

I like the Chimera, and use it mostly as a light tank or infantry support vehicle. But it wasn't in my 1000pt core list because I considered it too expensive in the old dex. But it will most likly find its way into the new upgraded core.
(For those who haven't understand how my army works, I always have a 1000pts core list that I never change. It is expanded by 500pts add-ons)

Out of curiosity Aeon, does that mean 5 guys can be broken down to: 3lasguns, one special weapon, and one heavy weapon? And if you use the last two, doesn't the Chimera become open topped?

does it really not become open topped? Surely that can't be right..... Not complaining though... And in my experience (I do run lots of tanks) chimeras tend to last a while. Except when they get eaten by a dreadnaught. Try not to let that happen....

So...straight up and simple, how does using a Chimera as a pillbox work, and can you fire special/heavy weapons while the Chimera is moving, or at all, or at the cost of the Chimera being open topped??

The way a chimera can become a mobile pillbox is by sticking a squad inside one and don't let them out. I'm not sure if you can fire the squad's heavy weapons while it's moving, but the Chimera essentially has five fire points measuring from the top hatch (yay), and never counts as open-topped (double yay).

You cannot fire a heavy weapon from a moving vehicle. You can fire everything else however as long as the vehicle isn't moving too fast. I'm partial to flamers.

A rather weak pillbox I would say. You need to lure the enemy to target other thingies to make it work. Decoy them with a LMR or something similar.
My tactics of choice is to advance them behind the men and giving support fire with a multilaser, heavy bolter and heavy stubber. Some time it drives up to block line of sight or blocking the enemies charge. Suffice to say, my Chimeras don't last long.

I use my Chimera more as a line of defence for my HQ. Being as they always are the first target, I have learned to set them in my Chimera, while using it for fire support and mobile cover. Chimeras are also good for moving up flanks, and with the right weapons, killing units in cover. (heavy flamer FTW) @ Aeon: i would say the BEST TRANSPORT would be the the DKoK Gorgon Armoured Assault Transport.

By top hatch, they mean the two rectangular doors near the back I assume? Or 5 guys jammed up in the turret hatch?

I thought that ONE man could fire a special or heavy from the turret hatch but if the Chimera moved the men inside counted as moving so no firing heavy weapons. And it's either 4 or 6 (I can remember) men who can fire their Lasguns because of the side-mounted Lasguns. I'm confussled...

Yeah, Chimera's are pretty scary nowadays.
I've always liked the Chimera, especially the double Heavy Flamer variant. I know it's dangerous to get that close with the transport, but when loaded with a double melta-gun Stormtrooper squad, I could effectively keep enemy infantry of their back while they slagged enemy vehicles.
