Think of it as a fire magnet.
Put it on the table and your opponent'll throw everything at it to knock it out, so the rest of your armour won't get a hammering. You just have to hope that you never have to fire it, because if you do your opponent'll see how bad it is and will ignore it for the rest of the game

Tell your opponent that its a Heavy 20, without saying that its AP -, stick it it out in the open and watch him throw everything at it while you take out his army. Just hope he hasn't read the new codex yet.

Just hope he hasn't read the new codex yet. Oddly enough, that plan would work on my friends... We had once convinced for ages that one of the units in his own army was weaker than it actually was.

It wouldn't work on me... but then... I would laugh at the suggestion that the punisher is AP3 anyway, that'd be so danned OP.

I enjoy how I was plugged on this thread on the first reply, and I didn't notice 'til now...
Punisher = you had better give this a scout move in a squad of two, or some other tactically genius plan...
Snipers = 5th ed says no. No snipers for you... [ultimate vexation] and the only marines who could take sniper rifles are now bs3...[/ultimate vexation] Honestly... that's why I have a Guard army now... [/resignation]

Which is why I'm gonna try out sniper rifles in my CCS and veteran squads eventually, seeing as they are BS4.

Yep, I've done something similar, I stuck two sniper rifles in a ccs with a heavy bolter designed to sit back at 36" with the heavy weapons and hurl a few shots and some verbal abuse at the enemies. Haven't gotten to try my army yet, though.
Still, the poor punisher suffers in comparison to even the hellhound for main gun firepower. The hellhound gets likely nearly as many hits, but ignores cover and anything short of power armor. Oh god does that make the punisher look lame all of a sudden. At least with the other russes you can fling templates at squads with reckless abandon to kill things and get tons of hits.

It can be argued that bs4 snipers actually benefit from 5th ed, but the dice gods are fickle things...

I will agree that sniper rifles are more useful with BS4 and above, but I still think for what they do, the other special weapons are better.
Even with Pinning and Rending, there are enough high Ld. or Fearless enemies out there that Pinning is essentially nullified and Rending requires you to take them in larger numbers to get the most out of them.
If you're willing to give them to an entire platoon, it may be worth it, but you'd need the points to make that a viable option.

Well it's either plinking away at stuff with sniper rifles or nothing from 36", so I'm just taking them to get in the odd shot and draw a bit of attention away from my more agressive CCS. I still think it's the best available choice, but if I find that squad shooting from inside 24" I'll just swap them out for my beloved grenade launchers. I already have an unhealthy number of those in my army (I don't really like infantry tankbusting when the grenade launcher's there and cheap and I've got vanquishers available to kill tanks. Plus, it's too much like my Black Templars to do my tank hunting with infantry)

I assume you're using the standard definition of ultimate plinker as a wanton purveyor of depressingly poor shots? If so, then yeah, that'd be the punisher.

Punish you for your trust in it? Punish the sensibilities of all the beardy players out there? Tote around a gratuitous amount of bullet spam like a certain comic book antihero?
I do think it needs to be lootable by orks, though. They'd love it, and who knows, with their talents it might actually become good.

That's wonderful, one guy in a skull themed shirt is more capable than a tank with a freaking gatling gun. Not even rending, I bet the Punisher is rending =P

Of course he's rending.
He has a switch blade that spring fires the blade at a target.
How much more rending can you get?

After m game this afternoon, I realized that the Punisher has one attribute that really does give it a boost compared to all the others except for the Demolisher and Executioner: Rear Armour 11. A bunch of Striking Scorpions took out my HellHound in 2 rounds of CC, but then took four more Turns and still didn't quite manage to finish off my Executioner, thanks to the rear AV 11.
Of course, the main gun's weak enough that a mild boost in it's survivability isn't really worth much, but I thought it worth mentioning.
Really, though, the Eradicator is the one that should have gotten the buffed up Rear Armour, since it's designed for use in Urban Combat or other situations where it's much easier for enemy Assault Units to sneak up on it.

The punisher was an epic downer for me and my friends. Cool idea, terrible execution. Then I noticed the hellhound variants, but that's a different story . Btw Reds, my little bro thought your avatar was hitler. Just thought I'd tell you.

In truth, neither Hitler nor Stalin are part of the Ministry. A head-boppin' Stalin is a good visual aid for our 'groovitude,' though.
