FTW means 'for the win.' inotherwords if you say ratlings FTW it translates from accronym-speak to english to mean approximately: "ratlings are a great unit that really help you win."
now then!!!
sniper rifles are primarily valuable due to their range and to-hit stats, however even in their 'to-wound' stat they are better than a lasrifle vs standard issue targets. the hidden power in sniper rifles is that they effectively grow in their ability to wound vs. other weapons when shooting at monsterous creatures. they always wound on the same score, regardless of how tough the enemy is. this makes them seem alot less powerful than they really are. one may consider a heavy bolter a better option, but unloading a heavy bolter at a wraithlord (massive toughness) isn't going to be as effective as unleashing a few sniper rifles on it. this makes them a solid weapon for the guard (even though they seem very understated) as they are a buff to every attribute of the lasrifle. the thing that makes them take on the feel of the red headed stepchild of the heavy weapon kingdom for guard is that, at the end of the day, they're still small arms. the drawback of the sniper rifle is that it basically fails vs. vehicles of any sort, and this can be frusterating, making you really feel the fact that it's a smallarm.
special weapon squads are never going to put as many sniper rifles on the field as a squad of ratlings, BUT... you'll get an amazing amount of options unlocked by opening up special weapon squads with a doctrine point vs. unlocking ratlings from the restricted unit list.
special weapon squads, if selected as a doctrine, should (in my humble opinion) always be fielded in pairs. there are two weapons that are (basically) otherwise unavailable to the IG without unlocking special weapon squads (or ratlings in the case of the sniper rifle). those weapons are: the sniper rifle, and, the demo charge. I am a proponent of a 3 rifle special weapon squad - don't expect it to do much, but use it for effect. sniper rifles excell at one thing: forcing armor saves. use them to cause that one extra save on a unit that's on the ropes, or focus them on a monsterous creature. versus a carnifex, your sniper rifles are basically hitting >reliably< with the power of an AUTOCANNON round, which isn't something to scoff at! use the sniper rifle while it's range is to its advantage, then leave the theater of combat with them when things to turn sour - move them off as fast as they can go into a second firing position so that when things resolve at the firebase they were ordered to abandon, they will have targets to again harass.
the beauty of having a second special weapon squad (which can turn out to be dirt cheap) is that when your snipers reposition and abandon their former post at the firebase they were firing from, you can have a second squad lurking amongst all the riflemen in the firebase, one of which is carrying (as my common opponents like to call it) 'the briefcase.' there's nothing like tossing a pie plate of complete death onto a tightly packed mass of enemy models that are about to overrun your lines. this is a great ace up the sleeve that comes as part of the package (and shouldn't be ignored in my humble opinion) with the special weapon squad option.
special weapon squads are alot more than a few sniper rifles, they have a ton of options and work best when the right weapons are combo'ed up, giving the special weapon squad choice potentially more killing power than even a squad of ratlings. this is definately the advanced choice however as it requires alot more forethought and planning to execute to achieve a strong battlefield result with.
in the end, sniper rifles are only >part< of the special weapon squad option, just as they are part of the light infantry option. the only true sniper rifle choice out there is the ratlings, and as most everyone agrees, they are a stellar unit at accomplishing the goals they are designed to focus on.
it's easy to dismiss the special weapon squad and light infantry options as inferior, but there's alot more to it than just the 'rifles to make them work to their full potential I think.

Anywho, snipers are great! Try using a squad of em against some nids, its so useless. shoot at the big bugs and the sniper rifles are valuable for their ability to hit reliably and wound as easily as they wound hormaguants.

If having trouble with snipers (especially SM snipers) Then buy a hellhound, or even better (if you can find the sod) a griffon. The griffon can blow them out of terrain from behind terrain, its min range is only 12" (if a sniper team is that close then grin to yourself and start lining up the rapid fire weapons). The hellhound is exceptionally self-explanatory
FLAMING DEATH!!! (at a distance)

Mitch hedberg is a great comedian! Look him up on you tube, hes real funny. I plan on taking a ton of sniper teams and having them stalk the battle field, picking off entire squads of enemy troops and wreaking total hell on heavys.

Yah, he's pretty funny... Not same class as Billy Connolly, but hell, who is. I find snipers are only good against High toughness stuff (cough* Wraithlord *cough) as they're too damned expensive (points and real money) to warrant more than 2 squads.
But your ideas cool...

Yeah, Snipers can raise hell among armoured troops. Jeez, city fight, a narrow alley, one man with a sniper rifle and you've got a wreck.

I think that giving sniper rifles to main troops are a waist of time since most squads are always on the move. Unless you have have heavy weapons squad with them such as a missile launcher. This allows you to pin your opponent and then hit them with blast templates. Perfect huh? I always include Ratling snipers in my army. I find that for 110pts you can easyly take out even a massive Carnifex. So in conclusion YES I do use snipers.

They are good in infantry squads, I do it mainly for fluff, the soviets included one man with a sniper rifle in each infantry squad.

Question: Is it generally acceptable to use other models as a representation for ratlings? I would like to use some customized cadian/catachan snipers as stand ins. As much as I like the ratlings stats, I just don't like the models.

considering its what I do for the army , it would be a shame not to use them in my pretend little world. they do wonders against almost anything, and without doctrines I feild 13 of them. .. it rocks... death to all my enemies SSG. All c o c k
