Hi there I'm taking a little break from painting urban camo (1st Leman Russ finished, second squad as good as..). Can't do greys anymore for a little while and did a side project. It's going to be a 10 men squad and a Chimera in desert camo. How do you like my first try? Any suggestions what to do better? Thank for any C&C's Cheers CC

Nice indeed. I tend to be lazy with skin but I like how yours turns out. What colours do you use?

You paint as well as the Eavy Metal guys in the WD, in my opinion.

Well after some more looking at it I found 2 things I have to critisize. 1. Moldlines on both boots 2. Plain sand on the base. Paint it somehow and add some bits/ dead grass whatever. It looks boring if its just plain sand from the box

Bah, the moldlines are barely visible, but the bases do need a little flare. I like that paint scheme, how you can paint camo I dunno. It reminds me of black hawk down, damn I loved that movie... *Runs off to watch it for the 40th time.*

Barely visible... I see 2 big grey lines... And commissarimho it is easier to paint camo then plain clothes since you don't need to highlight/shade camo schemes. And normally you can finish camo really fast and it always looks good as long you stick to one painting style.

Cheers for all your replies so far! Since it is a testmini (and it has had about 4 coats of paint so far..) I am certainly not too bothered about the mould lines. I quite like the plain sand and intend to leave it that way, something I certainly wouldn't do for anything else than desert. knight (M.I.A): You are certainly right, camo is dead easy to paint once you got a steady hand. How do you like mine? The black and white dots look a little like eyeballs the longer I look at them..weird. Should I got for dark brown instead of black?? What do you think guys? Cheers CC

Try bleached bone instead of white.
You sir, are my new hero.

It looks very good, well done, I am getting a feeling you are simply fishing for compliments now. Nah, I am only kidding, I'd be very happy with a model looking that good too!

for the white dots with the black I would use bleached bone instead of skull white an make them about half the size you have them now. will probably end up looking better that way.
excellent test mini's.

I really like your mini but I'm for the use of Bleached Bone like the others. The camo scheme looks really realisitc.

Okay...how do you do that? I tried and failed, lol. I mean, it looks okay, but nothing in comparison. Hmm...

Keep it white. It's suppose to contrast slightly.

I love this model. I will fashion a platoon after them! Brought home from Iraq to fight off some nids.

Again thanks for your replies! Well, I tried Bleached Bone and mabus is quite right, there isn't enough contrast to the Iraqi Sand base colour. Anyways, my wife said she likes it the way it is I probably shouldn't change it at all...especially since I still need to convince her of the nessescity to own at least TWO Baneblades . @ Commissar: Maybe it is because I used Vallejo colours for the uniform. Any questions, let me know. I'll keep you informed about how I get along. Cheers CC

Well commissar you should start off with some more easy camo scheme. Choclate chips are pretty difficult for the beginning like Ciaphas urban camo scheme.
For example you could try the "Battle for Vogen" colour scheme from the codex. Its really simple but looks quite good. For any other camo schemes I suggest you take a look at the US GW site or in the codex.

@commissar Did you check the i-net? I live pretty rural and order Vallejo colours always online. They are brilliant and worth every penny. Many retailers who sell Battlefront's Flames of War miniatures will have them in stock. Do some googleing. The colours I used: USA TAN EARTH (70874) and Iraqi Sand (70819). You could try GW colours of course. I'd go for Khemri Brown (Foudation) and Bleached Bone mixed with a tiny little bit Brown to get rid of the yellowness. For the brown camo stripes I used Calthan Brown (Foundation) highlighted with a little USA TAN EARTH and the spots are obviously black and white Try to keep the brown stripes irregular but quite horizontal. As knight mentioned earlier, camo is actually easy to paint, so don't give up mate! Regards to lovely Winnipeg Cheers CC

Just a quick update, I changed the black and white spots to get rid of the 'eyeball-effect'. Do you think that's not quite as strange?? Cheers CC

I hate to say it, but it should be white with black spots. no one'll realize the couple models in there that have black with white spots mind you, but yeah. I keep on asking myself what looks different about your models - the helmets look much bulkier and more reminiscent of the kevlar helmets of modern day soldiers then it struck me: you shave off the winged skull icon on the front! I like it alot, it's a nice little touch. I'm a fan of your paintingwork sir. it's very inspiring to look at, though I would challenge you to come up with a unique camo pattern of your own that goes away from modern day camo schemes and delves into something custom (I know, that's a hard one, huh?). I think you'll make great armies with these modern camo schemes but you will really make an great army with an identity when you create a realistic yet unique camo pattern for your dudes. the models are ace, by the way

Hi there here's a pic of the 'original' Desert BDU, as you can see it's light spots with a black 'shadow', probably supposed to immitate sunlit pebbles. I think my second attempt comes a lttle closer... @ Turtleboy Thanks for your kind words. I actually never liked painting camo and after my urban camo unit this is only my second attempt to paint a camo pattern. So please give me a little time on this one. But obviously it's gonna happen eventually... Cheers CC
