Imperium of man. The only reason te fish haven't been wiped from creation is the imperium is preoccupied with multiple other threats...
Oh wait, star wars empire *facepalm*
Anyway, still imperium...

The Imperium, not forgetting imperial storm troopers (the ones in plastic armour) have an armour save of 6+.

The galactic empire during episode 4 had 2 sith lords. Other than that i think the imperium could take them. Difference is the imperium is at war with multiple other factions all at once and is still doing a decent job. The Galactic empire was mostly toppled by the rebellion which is pathetic. To be fair though the galactic empire had multiple death stars over different times and super star destroyers. However the imperium has many, many fleets and can pretty much call down exterminatus anyway. In a ground battle the imperium would win just because of space marines, titans and super heavies. Don't get me wrong the death star and death star 2 would put up a hell of a fight. The galactic empire makes really awesome super weapons with one fatal weakness in them. However in land battles the imperium would totally own them. With the death star it wouldn't matter though. So i think the imperium could still take the galactic empire even in space. Other than the super star destroyers and death star the fight would be pretty even i think. Also as far as troopers go the best the galactic empire has would be dark troopers i think. Still wouldn't be a match for space marines esp. terminators. Super heavies would also own AT-AT's pretty hard. Don't be mean to plastic stormtroopers. You know every guard player wishes our stormtroopers came in plastic too .

Ugh say galactic empire or GE when referring to star wars and imperium when referring to 40k. Sorry it's just imperials is very hard to interpret and i don't know enough of each lore to know about the blackstone fortresses and such. I think it's 40k but i could be wrong.

In space, I think it would fall down to who had to most numbers. It seems like star destroyers could go against cruisers and frigates, while a ssd could take down a Battleship. On ground, the Imperium would win. They have such a numerical advantage over the GE, it's a bit ridiculous.

Well lets see; They both have Laser weapons, The GE has enhanced warriors with crap armour, The Imperium has super enhanced warriors with awesome armour, as well as numberless crap troops with OK armour, The EG is led by a really old guy with small powers like that of a Psyker and is awesome at fighting, The Imperium is led by a dead guy, who is an awesome Psyker, The Imperium is besieged by aliens and heretics every day, countless rebellions are stopped every day, it endures The EG is attacked by 1 rebellion, it dies.
I think it's safe to say the Imperium would win, if the war dragged out the GE would be worn down by the Imperium, no question.

Sith Lords are irrelevant. We have Librarians and psykers, who do the same thing, and have a lot more of them.
You guys forget that both the Death Stars were taken out by a single small attack craft. The Imperium would need one Thunderhawk full of Space Marines to be able to take out any single GE ship. Hell, they could just teleport them on. Plues the Imperium has atomics, which it uses in space combat. (Fallout doesn't really matter in space.) And let's face it, The Imperium has a lot longer range with their lance weapons. Didn't they only have 1 SSD, anyways?
Ground wise, there is no contest. I think a PDF could take out an invading GE army.

No one would win..... we would join forces! then we could feild darth vader as a HQ and we could have At At's as Titans plus the deathstar would be a great addition for destroying tyranid hive fleets think about it, why fight them when we could benefit from them?! Dave

The GE is probably better at building its space forces though, the IoM would struggle to replace ships and there is a chance that some IoM forces would be seduced by the dark side.

To be fair to the Evil Galactic Empire, the expanded universe gives them more and better ways to beat back the God-Emperor's forces. For example, if Grand Admiral Thrawn were leading the operation, whatever forces the Imperium threw at them wouldn't stand a chance in the long term, and he'd probably have a significant tactical advantage anyway. This guy > Creed, Calgar or any other "tactical genius" the Imperium could throw at him.
Also, Stormtroopers only sucked whenever the main characters were around. I will cite the opening battle of A New Hope and the entire Battle of Hoth in The Empire Strikes Back as examples of how they were competent (if not frighteningly effective) soldiers in the movies.

Don't forget that the GE have to work to get to the speed of light, while the Imperium can travel through the Warp far faster.

Don't forget that the GE have to work to get to the speed of light, while the Imperium can travel through the Warp far faster. Not true. Hyperspace speeds were faster than light, and the speed there depended on how fast you were going when the hyperspace window opened. Honestly, the end result would depend entirely on how much you were willing to let the Empire use from its arsenal. Stormtoopers and Star Destroyers? Imperium wins. Sun crushers and dark troopers? Empire wins. Thrawn and Isard? Empire. Malleus inquisitors using retarded-scary warp tech? Maybe Imperium - dunno, the Force is fairly well depicted as being more powerful overall, and more reliable than warp powers. This is the sort of argument you can't call without getting more specific. Addendum: Another point is, we know how a lot of the technology in Star Wars works, at least in sci-fi terms. But with 40K, a lot of it is basically still "it works because it's magic from the Dark Age of technology, and we don't need to know how."

It really doesn't matter who wins as long as I get to choke dudes with my mind and kill people with a red laser sword.

What would happen with power sword VS a light sabre is a more important question.

i would say the Imperium of man hands down.
for naval engagements a couple of Battlecruisers with nova canons would cripple a star destroyer easy. heck i could even say one nova shot would do the trick. plus i know that solid objects can pass through star wars shields, so i bet torpedo's would be very effective considering that ship based anti fighter is not that good.
while atomic weapons are around they are rarer than Exterminatus weapons.
the death star 2 anti ship laser would probably be stopped by a void shield but would then collapse. but this all depends how the warp and hyperspace are handled fluff wise. now if a ship got between the Super-laser on full power blowing up a planet then an Imperium ship would be cut in half easy if not destroyed out right.

There is a rather easy way to resolve Star Wars vs. 40K in space: there are B5 Wars mods for both Star Wars and BFG.
Of course, they're both fan mods, so the balance is iffy, but still...

Of course, all of you Imperium of Mankind fan people are forgetting that blasters, the common hand weapon used in Star Wars, are PLASMA weapons. So no armor save for anyone getting shot by a blaster... We'll just ignore Tau for purposes of this discussion.
