Back to the thread, DIY texture paint seems like a great idea, any ideas on what type of sand is best? My guess would be that a medium sized sand grain would be best. Large stuff will fall out of suspension, whereas really fine grains might not provide enough texture.

Well, for my textured paint I used black acrylic Amsterdam paint mixed with fine sand that we filled my niece's sandbox with. I just scooped a bunch out of the sandbox, she was none the wiser. Buahahaha. For added win, I just added the remainder of GW's basing sand/pebble mix. (shut up, I was rich back then)
It looks good, but you will get lumpy paint if you're not careful. I tried adding some water but that didn't do much.
Upside is that it doesn't harden quickly.

I used some sand from a sandbox, mixed with finer dirt/dust I swept up on the curb in front of my house. I kept it for several months in a paint can. I had to mix it up everytime I used it cause the sand, etc would settle to the bottom. Other wise it worked great and gave a very concrete looking/feeling surface.

Just so that you guys know - I did some measuring and 1:35 scale models from other model makers work perfectly with GW models. I'll post up a piece of terrain as soon as it's done to show you guys just how nicely it fits. But 1:35 is a perfect scale!

I'm unsure. I got a 1/32 size kit and they were twice the size >.<
Also I'd advise against the GWS texture paint. Not worth it you either get large clumps and no paint or lots of paint and very little clumps. I ended up just adding water to the put, shaking, using the paint on the base and then sprinkling sand from a pot on the base. tap off the excess and paint over.

Save your money and don´t spent it on texture paint from GW........... 1. buy a big bottle PVA from the D.I.Y. 2. go the the beach or kindergarten or park and pick up some sand. (collect a bit of sand here and there while you are on holidays !! , allowing you the create your own stock of different sand types.... 3. put glue on the board or bases sprinkle it with the sand (mixture) I am now experimenting with fine sand mixed with crumbled slate.
