At the moment I'm leaning towards the darker armour as I like the contrast it gives the blue and orange. I had a bit of play this morning with doing the shotgun with a sort of "bluing" effect (as suggested over at boot camp), grey, and grey with a slight bluish hue. In all I'm not sold, as I think it blends too much with the darker armour. I'm going to have a go at something a bit more copper or brass after lunch.

I'm liking the copper-esq firearm and tubing around the face mask much better. I might look at doing a slightly heavier wash with the jade to look just a little bit like corroded copper. I've chucked some paint on the other elements of the model (I'm particularly liking the effect of the white face mask) so there is a roughly finished test model below. (Edit: Oh, and due to popular demand I darkened the pants just a little bit) I still need to touch up the hand guards, the shotgun cartridges, the light on his torso, the aquilla on the helmet and all sort of other details, but the essential test colour scheme is basically mocked up. Please give me thoughts and suggestions. I've got some pipes to straighten now, but in 2-3 hours I wanted to start painting properly. Also I'm not sure what shade to paint the wood on the base to complement the rest of the model (it will have a black rim). I'm actually contemplating something a bit paler (sort of like what is there now) so that the dark model stands out a bit more on it.

The black body armour is better than the off-white/ grey colour. It's just that the orange is so bright that the body armour looks better in black.
Those resin bases look pretty sick.

I like the scheme, I just think its too bright. I would use darker shades of the orange and blue. Having said that, they still look great and you've painted them really nicely.

It has been a little while but a lot has been going on. I have finished university (I am now a qualified civil engineer, haha!), I’ve been fishing (twice), I’ve been running around after other people and I’ve been helping my Dad build a shed (a currently incomplete project). I have been distracted from the poor 42nd Engineers by a small, but time consuming, side project. I’ve built a Necromunda gang almost exclusively using parts from Victoria Miniatures (link below). Some of these parts are just brilliant (the shotguns are awesome), and some are just plain fiddly (the goggle spring to mind). victoriaminiatures.highwire.com/products/new-releases?pagesize=12I bought the kilted highland legs, so I have a slightly steampunk Scottish gang. Overall I am pleased with the results. They should be painted in the next few weeks, but I’m not quite sure how to go about it. I might even adopt a similar scheme to what I’m using for my Krieg models for the sake of simplicity. Also I apologise for the poor quality photos. To start off we have the resident heavy, armed with a heavy stubber and lasgun. I had some Krieg stubbers lying around from my centaurs and it fitted in perfectly. Next is the gang leader, which is my favourite. He is armed with a shotgun (man-stopper rounds), a laspistol, frag grenades and a chainsword. Ganger 1 is armed with a shotgun and laspistol. This guy is a close second for favourite, as I love his pose. Ganger 2 is also armed with a shotgun and laspistol. I started building this guy as the gang leader, but the pose wasn’t doing what I wanted so I downgraded him to a standard ganger. Ganger 3 is armed with a lasgun. Ganger 4 is also armed with a lasgun and has some slight aggression issues. Ganger 5 also has just a lasgun and is obviously the oldest in the group. The three juves are armed with just their knives and laspistols. I gave them less kit and the youngest looking heads. This is the complete gang posing for a photo. I had two extra bodies left over and built two possible alternative models to add/swap into the gang as I play a few games (assuming my friends keep their end of the bargain and build their gangs). The first is an alternative gang leader or additional heavy, armed with a grenade launcher and a shotgun. The second is a ganger armed with a lasgun who dearly loves his highland music. I couldn’t resist getting this part from Victoria miniatures, as it just goes so well with the kilts. Aside from nearly finishing the five remaining engineers/veterans whilst on my last fishing trip, my poor Kriegsmen haven’t had much love the past few weeks. Fear not however, as I am enrolled in a doubles tournament in mid-December, and need 900 points. I’m trialling a colour scheme for my blimp tonight, so I should have photos in the coming days.

Really nice stuff. Those gangers will look great with a bit of colour.
Where did you draw the inspiration from for your engineer colour scheme ?

Thanks Ivory. To be perfectly honest I simply liked the colour orange and wanted to see if I could make it work. Blue was a natural contrast, and the rest was trial and error. I justify it by saying they are engineers with high-vis ;D I really wanted something which hadn't been done before, and since more Death Korps armies are painted brown/green/grey with lots of mud (which usually look great), something a bit more vibrant was a good way of achieving this. Not everybody likes it, but I'm over the moon because they are looking much better than I had envisaged. I've got a quick teaser of a very messy in progress blimp. I'm hoping to finish it by tonight. At the time 530 rivets and 15 kilometers of edging seemed like a good idea, as I had planned on painting the whole thing a uniform grey metal. As you can see I'm adopted a more vibrant scheme, which is going to involve painting the edging separately. It turns out these 530 rivets and edging is proving to somewhat painful!

This is some great stuff Speirs. It's really nice to see someone taking advantage of the fact this is a sci-fi hobby. Why can't there be an army with bright blue and orange uniforms. I'm sure there is a planet somewhere that has an orange sky and blue grass.
I really love it.
Also I love the Victorian miniatures, I personally really love the steampunk look of their miniatures. I'm thinking of getting some myself.
great job

Great project blog MajorSpiers. You've got some fantastic conversions and creations. Those tractored artillery are great. You're obviously one of those true guard nut jobs (must be all the resin dust!).
Loving the blimp. Real steampunk. Do have to say though, the blimp balloon does remind me of a stuffed rugby sock!

Forget all the nay say-er's, I think this color scheme is gorgeous! Very different but very well done! Are you planning to paint the skull's on the lapels of the trench coats?

Looking great! Still loving the tarnished weapons, they contrast really well with the uniforms.

Thanks kriegeirk, I simply forgot the lapel skulls. Fixed now. I've painted another eight veterans. Below are the painted models I have so far (obviously minus the bases). I'll add some better photos of the models tomorrow.

I must admit I wasn't totally convinced on the colour scheme at first but now - after seeing the rank and file - I think it looks amazing! The tarnished guns and the black/grey armour give a wonderful contrast to the bright orange and blue. And like you said they are definately something different! Can't wait to see where you go from here!

Major, I must say I agree with Judcottrell, first I was not that fond of the orange, but looking at the complete units I do admit indeed that I like them ! well done Sir !

@ Magot, I'm well versed in the hazards of plasma ;D. I'm sure they will blow up violently and often, however nothing makes MEQ and TEQ play much more cautiously and keep their distance than lots of BS4 ordered plasmaguns. Their psychological effect on the opposition is huge, however when they work they are devastating. I haven't progressed too far this last week or so (I've been fishing and it has been rather hot and muggy). I've got two modelling updates today regarding the engineer portion of the force. First up is Marbo, who I feel fits really well into the engineer theme, which is why I specifically used and engineer body for him. I've also used a Victoria Miniatures arms, laspistol, head and goggles. Unlike my old army I'm hoping to actually use this guy a little bit more in games. I'm super excited about the next conversion. I really, really, really, really, really wanted a Hades Breaching Drill for my engineers, but wasn't sure how to substitute it as a standard codex vehicle (it is very small). A while ago I concocted this idea where I use it as a Hellhound variant. The fast vehicle element is represented by quickly tunneling from place to place. The melta thing it has represents a hull multimelta, whilst the turret is represented by an engineer on top with the grenadier heavy flamer connected to a trailer. I have this mental image of this breaching drill bursting through the ground, an engineer leaping on top and spraying the enemy with noxious gases/acid (this just screams "Krieg" to me). I'm planning on using it as a Banewolf, but I will be able to use it as a hellhound as well if I want. The engineer on top is magnetised to neatly swivel around (i.e. he has a fixed swivel arc for fairness in games). The trailer is made from a Kromlech platform and wheels with the baneblade spare fuel tanks on top. Like my other centaur vehicles I'll be using a base to represent the vehicle footprint (as you can see I still need to build this). Here is a shot with my other favourite vehicle conversion, the manticore. I'm getting back to painting the infantry. I need to get about 19 more painted and two vehicles (plus ALL their bases) in the next two weeks as I'm enrolled in a 900 point doubles tournament.
