So, some time ago I started a Pretorian army (using cadians with trimmed of shoulder pads and Maxmini heads) due to some other destracshions, one being sculpting my own 10mm Doctor who models and co writing the rules. Any way, I digress... I've been doing a lot of RolePlay with a group (Dark Heresy and Cyberpunk) who also play 40k. Well I must admit I wouldn't want to pay a load for an army, and imperial guard are one of the most costly. But we're all up for a small force. One lad is very slow with his painting and needs guidance and motivation to get on with his Dark Angels. Another is doing cultists and its a very laborious job. Another wants to start a new Tau force and one wants to get on with his Chaos. So... My Pretorians. I want a gun line force, I also want a load of Ordance and I'm basing my army on one platoon (plus supporting troopers). So here's my pics: Squad with Autocannon and Sniper riffle. Lascannon weapon team with ForgePlanet carts. Mortar weapons team. Hooky the sniper. Bassilisks with crew. Close up of crew. Drummer boy Painted Rattlings - using the old models as the have red coats on unlike the new ones. Close up of rattling Painted Squad II with heavy Bolter. Close up of squad II Painted infantry man (standing) Painted Infintry man (kneeling) Painted Captain Tobias Vaun 750pts ready for battle.

I'm loving the deep red, thats a nice colour! Very gritty, great work so far.
The posing for the mortar crews is excellent and the idea of having the whole force look like a determined gun line should be interesting to see on the table top. What's next on the cards?

Hi Cosmic... Been a while...
Well as I say, it's going to be based on Captain Vaun and his platoon .
So I do have a company command squad with Master of Ordance, but it's modelled to look like a recon squad with the MOO looking like a Sargent with Binoculars, calling in the strike.
All 750pts are made, just need to get painting. Think ill paint the 2nd squad and platoon command next. Have the lads round on Friday to do a evenings painting.
Here's my army list (squads with * are in the 750pts)
Pretorians 1500pts
<''> HQ <''> •CCS (Master of Ordnance) 80*
<''> Elite <''> • Ratling (5) 50*

this army needs some rough riders! it would look amazing! I like the paint sheme as well but i have to point out the removal of the shoulderplates seems to be done rather harsh on certain models. have you considered greenstuffing some tassels on the shoulders?

Your right, the one kneeling, never noticed until now how straight that cut is... Ill check them all over. Most have been green stuffed but I don't want the modian/pretorian tassel shoulder pads.
Rough riders, not a bad idea!
I'm also thinking of using OOP ratskins as Zulu style natives for conscripts.

how about using feral orks as zulus, and cavalry as count as ork bikers? their stats might be better then the actual rough rider stats

Wow!!! Orks are xenos scum mate!!! Lol
Pretorians did use ork blood axe's as scouts at one point, but I think Ratskins would fit for that British imperialist look.
Also, rough riders, if I do have them, I think I should have the mounted red coats, they would look smart.

i was merely talking about using the ork biker rules for them, don't worry! as for the feral ork comment, it was based upon previous GW dioramas where the orks always represent the less civilised historical army

Ah, instead of rough rider rules!!! Not a bad idea.
Also, the idea of using savage Orc models as conscripts has grown on me mate!

They look scary! Nice job with the green stuff How are you going to paint them? I was wondering if, with all the different hats etc, that you might be doing them as a group of individuals rather than a cohesive unit?

You're off to a great start! Guard with side burns- classic! Zulu is one of my favourite films, have you thought about using some catachans as "native" contingent? I know they did a runner but could look cool!

I'm going to paint them the same as the standard troops but more rag-tag. Two have 'red coats' so that should look cool.
Natives wise, I was thinking Ratskin Renagades? Perhaps Orc Saviges from Fantesy or possibly more red coats but new recruits.

Always nice to see an older regiment done good! Only thing I can say is like hendrik already stated, some of the shoulders are a bit rough, but otherwise you've got a well executed little force going for ya!

Thanks for the comments, keep them coming. Yeah, I did enjoy bringing back the Pretorians. As I have played since 2nd ed. the main thing I loved about guard was the multitude of different regiments, that you just don't see any more, it's basically all cadians (although I do like the Cadians). I did leave the flack jackets on. Other converters have gone for a single breasted jacket from third party company or got hold of a lot of bits. But 2nd ed Cadians didn't have the flack jacket either. Also, if orks are firing slugs at my redcoats I really should give them armour to keep there insides from going outside! The other note is the bases. I was going to go for a sand, as you would imagine for a desert board. Instead I went for a dark brown. This is so they should look fine on most/all boards. This could be mud on a jungle board, it's slightly sandy so will fit on a sand board or urban and recently a mate came round and I had my snow forest board and once again they fit perfectly.

Guess what I'm planning now...? I'm going to use Victoria Minatures legs and arms and the standard Cadian bodies to keep them looking the same as the rest of my force. Here is the link for Victoria Minatures parts: victoriaminiatures.highwire.com/product/rough-rider(I've had stuff from her before and talked to her via email, she's fab!) (The Victoria mini shotgun arms are also a must for some vets!)

I'm making a Vetran squad ATM. They have maxmini carapace armour torsos. The heads are also maxmini pith heads with the face cut out of the helmet and Gasmasks placed inside and the green stuffed round to smarten them up. Very steam punk! The Sargent will have no Gasmask showing off his bionic eye. The only other without a gas mask is the flamer guy. Most vets with Flamers have to be smoking a cig eh? Well my guy will have a pipe, very british empire. Just Victoria miniature pump action shotguns to add.
