Nothing wrong with cadians. If you can't afford metal or resin you can still afford greenstuff, correct? SO DAMN WELL CONVERT STUFF!!!

I'm just not a Fluff guy. I could care less about the back ground of an Army.
Build a cool looking Army. Play to have fun. Still have a real life.
I hope to see more plastic kits. That would allow more options when I convert.

Sounds great to me: The last codex was a big improvement, and I'm sure this one will be the same. Will some things get nerfed, yeah, I'm sure, but i remember people bitching about doctrines stopping them taking ratling snipers. Am I worried for my all metal grenadier army or my 12 sentinel attack army: a little, but I'm sure they'll make it so that I can play something pretty close to what I want to play. It makes sense because it makes sense for the business.
I WANT gw to be a successful business, and I WANT 40k rules to be updated, because it makes the game fresh and fun again, and the alternative (say if we stuck in 3rd) would be playing dull-as-feth rhino rush.
9 russes... maybe: but that's a mere 1305 points without upgrades: and it's not going to give you much else to play with. If you can win with 9 russes then I'd like to see it!
Can't wait !

Actually, you might want to look at your sentinel army a bit closer. Since currently they fall under Scouts you are able to place them in reserve and use the outflank move in 5th so that you might be able to come in from the board edge. Kitted out with something to remove armor this can be a huge advantage to you.

do have to say though with the new line of sight rules snipers are going to be nasty crazy and the larger models such as termies and marines, orks, and chaos is going to have a BIG problem when trying to hide in the battlefeild unless the terragin and obstacles are large (pardon my mispelling)

ssgtdude: you're right. From what I've heard sentinels are going to be pretty useful in 5th, so I'm fairly psyched about that. HK missiles and las + auto-canons all round i think.
mitrooper: you know I think tons of things are going to change, which is great. I'm looking forward to 5th more than i imagined!

it sucks they are removing the doctrines but in another way it is great. the down side is that my whole army wont be able to deep strike for free. but it does make sense removing it because the doctrines really restricted the type of play you could do.

You guys know what these rumours fix?EVERYTHING EXCEPT the areas that need improving.
so lets see what the rumours say:
a)leman russ squadron:ok, i will be getting more tanks(not 9 russes, probably 3 russes and 2 basilisks the way to go). in the current codex, i can get 3 demolishers and 3 hellhounds for 900 total points, WITH the upgrades. conclusion:tanks will be good, especially since in 5th they will be tough.NOTHING changes. 3 russes and 2 basilisks are good, 3 demolishers and 3 hellhounds ALSO good.
b)Valkyries:okay, more stuff for full-tank army.Yes, mate, we know, we can build a good mechanized army.Discover America(and call it India, Colombo)!as i said before, we already can(in 5th with the current codex).NOT a stormtroopers upgrade, a mechanixed upgrade.
c)enemies not getting cover from infantry platoons:sure, my lasguns(Infantry platoons have very few spec/heavy weapons)will ignore cover. great.just what i needed(not).
The IG codex does NOT "simply suck". it just suffers from some choices being better than others, and having overpriced(for tourney scene) infantry(6 points that do nothing) and elite choices/advisors. WHERE is the buff for them(where the buff is needed)?
-stormtroopers:they will still be horrible?the Valkyrie will not be used as a transport, just a skimmer-tank.why would i want to get my stormtroopers near the enemy?it's not like they can deal damage with their str 3 guns(their plasmaguns/meltaguns can just deepstrike if i want to get enemy tanks, still no need to transport).Way to go, valkyrie=new tank.
-priest:still no need to buy him. -commissar:still so-so...and only for an infantry army for the global vox-Ld 10. -psyker:lololololol.is there such a thing as a sanctioned psyker? -ratlings:at least they rend in 5th... -ogryns:still easilly killed in cc as no special cc weapon for bone'ead, and no init/save boost or anything.
MOST IMPORTANTLY:killpoints of an infantry guard army are still INSANE.an infantry platoon of 2 squads and 1 command gives 4 killpoints to the opponent(3 units +1 character).
WE DO NOT NEED BUFFS TO THE MECHANIZED IG.IT IS ALREADY OK.what we need is a reason to take advisors, exotic units and hordes of infantry in competitive tournaments other than drop-troops-plasmaspam .and the rumours do not fix that in the least sense(at least yet).

praetorean, A lot of good things said by you. The only answer anyone can give is that we will have to wait for the codex to come out. Rumors have it that the basic price cost will be coming down for the basic guardsman. If this is true then we can only assume that the prices of other models will be adjusted accordingly.
I would love to see an Ogryn with a nice Evisorator, but probably will not happen. The only real option to boost the Ogryn to make them more survivable would be to give them Feel No Pain, and an increase in their toughness (Both if there is no price drop).
The other huge problem for the guard is the actual cost of the models. While a typical SMurf army is running about 30-40 models we are easily double that number if not triple in the same size game. Very easily one could field over 150+ models in any game under 2K points even if you tool up some expensive extras on one or more of the models.
I'll throw out the money for a new Valkyrie if not only because I love the look of the kit. Not to mention that the new transport rules will allow me to purchase it for one troop and load up a whole different troop choice. Giving me the option of throwing my Ogryn into combat where they are needed most. (Remember the Valkyrie has an assault ramp).
The kill points will also be addressed in the codex. I have a hard time believing that they are going to penalize the Guard that harshly for 3 units costing 4 kill points. Especially with the math working out as you have it. Most likely what will happen is that you will see a redefinition of which HQ are actually IC and which are not. This will probably have something to do with how they are purchased (e.g. standard Commissar = elite vs. Independent Commissar = IC). With that said the JSO will end up loosing thier coveted IC standing which will bring the standard platoon of 2 squads and command back to 3 Kill points where it belongs. As long as we are on Kill points it could be worst. They could have left the original kill points system intact and not made changes to it.

I also have this month's White Dwarf. for tank lovers i repeat, you will be fine in 5th.NO NEWS HERE.when tanks get tougher, IG triumphs. It's not like we move so much anyway.
am i wrong to be ANGRY that my fear seems to come true? Now i have to stop using my infantry army. in tourneys..no more stormtroopers...no more conscripts...just tanks...so many (tank) options...rename all IG to steel legion.

sorry for ranting. but can't i field a fluffy army of 2 stormtroopers squads, 4-5 advisors, 2 leman russ, some infantry/heavy weapon squads and couple of chimeras?this list is so cadian-fluffy, so balanced, and so USELESS in 5th, becomes more useless with this codex as I'll be stupid, it seems, to not play mechanized.bye-bye commissar...bye bye psykers...bye bye to all exotic units. if this happens, you can count me out of guard players as all the fluff of my army will be taken out.

I'll still be using a mainly infantry based army with a demolisher. But I just like building tanks and throwing in the odd LR variant to keep my opponent on his toes.
Plus it'll mean I can field masses of armour in Apoc games without having to buy the FW books.

Oh this sounds great. A really good reason for getting out of my coffin again.
Customizable platoons? Great! Screw those unflexible doctrines Attachment units for Platoons? Is it Christmas already? Finally good sniper rifles that can wound something? Must be my birthday falling together with Christmas. Plastic Stormies, Valkyries, and 3 plastic Russes? Must be easter as well.
Btw if tanks can't shoot ordonance when moving in the same turn, my money is not on the Exterminator, but on the good old Conquerer. Just a blast template, but can shoot on the run.
And want many people some cheese to their whine?

here is something, I have been trolling for something concrete on the imperial guard, lo and behold, it is on the front page of bell of lost souls. they have everything. The first is an HQ choice, a commisar lord, the second is the interior of a valkyrie in sketch up format. belloflostsouls.blogspot.com/as usual the pictures won't post.

Ooo ooo ooo ... Commissar with an ermine stoll - very swish. I am particularly entranced by the Black Reach box set, that is a serious bunch of models.

Yeah, the "Commissar Lord" looks cool. Looks like it'll be a long, long time before the Codex is out though.
