Nice little bit of random fluff - little bits can help build character backgrounds without having to go into a really detailed long blurb about one of their previous exploits. It also seems to hint at being part of something more - which is groovy!

Hahahaha, yes, there is a small chance that that was a typo I'll get it fixed. @gabe - I'm glad you like it! I always think the short bursts like that are a lot more fun to type as well. The 'something more' will be revealed eventually, promise! Also: FU CK TOPIC CRAZE. What the hell? Changing the website in the middle of a post?!

Hope everyone had a fun weekend! Exam's done now, but I have a research project to write up for Friday, so hobby time is still a little slim Here's a few things I've been working on this weekend in spare moments though, just to show you I'm still slowly ticking over: The parts for Coop's base turned up, so he's finally getting a lick of paint! I was really really proud of this head, right up until the gallery program zoomed in on it, at which point I vomited. No up close viewing allowed! I've also based up Twitch, and had a bash at making his molotov a bit more interesting. I'm not really happy with it - anyone happen to have any good techniques for sculpting or painting fire? As always, all input is majorly valued, good or bad. So be as harsh as you like! Hopefully a bigger update soon - free time would be lovely! Scarp

Scarper, I want to say that I LOVE the mini you posted above this post. It's what I'd imagine a character from the game APOX to look like. Also, do you want to make a mini based on a story or a picture? Because if it's just a picture, I've got one right here: avatar.xboxlive.com/avatar/Syphonides/avatar-body.png

syphon - Thanks so much, man! It's really nice to know if people like my stuff - that's really kind of you to say! I had to look up APOX - looks pretty fun, is it something you play? I'm working on sorting out a better flame for Twitch soon, so hopefully he'll look better before I'm done ;D @beav - Cheers for the heads up! That's really helpful Today's update is Coop, painted up. I had some fun with water effects, and tried really hard to get his jeans to look like he'd just waded in them. There are a few bits I'm happy with, and several that I'm not, but I'm waaaay too tired to go into it. Bonus points for anyone who identifies which are which! Sorry if the angles in the pictures are a little strange - I really am dead on my feet, and can't be arsed to retake em. Enjoy, anyway! UPDATED PICS BELOW! Please let me know if you like / dislike, I'm pretty ambivalent about this one. Constructive comments would be ace too, so please criticize away! Thanks for all your input so far, Scarp

That looks amazing Scarper! I find that any given persons harshest critic will be himself, so don't worry too much about anything you're not happy with, fix it when you're in the mood. Just stand back and be proud of a fairly amazing model Paradill

The only thing I'd suggest is to turn his head back toward center just a touch. It looks like he's had an accident.

Paradill - thanks man, that's really kind of you! Had kind of a rotten day yesterday, probably shouldn't have been painting at all! Today's better though, and I'll see if I can fix what I don't like and update for this evening. Thanks so much for the comment! @ymootquiem - Thanks a lot for the pointer! You managed to hit on my biggest problem - the frigging head. I tried and tried to get him to work looking the other way (helping RiffRaff out of the water, like I'd planned), but because I'd painted his head before the body, his gaze was in the wrong place. Looking at someone behind you, you'd turn most of the way, then gaze right. It sounds insignificant, but without it, the pose just looked wrong. I was in a rotten mood last night - long day, don't ask - and didn't want to risk messing up the whole head just to change the eyes. I will be doing it this lunchtime though when I'm on break from work, so I'll try to update this eve. I'll throw a few more washes on the lining, and get some highlights on raised folds of the jacket too. It's all stuff I should have done before - should never paint in a "can't be arsed" mood! UPDATES TO COME LATER TODAY

I especially like the laspistol - it looks like an ex-Guard issue weapon that's been aquired and seen alot of action. A brilliant example of realistic ageing/weathering.

I hate to say it but that expressions looks so scornful, and it would appear to be at RiffRaff :?

I snickered when I saw the first picture that has the hand out of focus. It was almost as if he was saying "How YOU doin'?"

Thanks, guys! And Syphon, I totally see that now you mention it And Beav, as you may have guessed from my hunt for a smiling model, I totally agree with you. The head I used might be getting a break for a bit, and here's a possible, WIP replacement - what do you reckon? It's a little hard to see in the pic, but the catachan head has had some (minor!) facial surgery. I was going for a playful, mocking half smile. She's stuck, and his hand's just out of reach. I'm halfway through some fluff for the pair of them, but they're supposed to be really close, so as Beav suggested, the other head didn't really fit. Still, working on!

Couple more mugshots of Coop's head / hat. Hope you like! It looks pretty messy at the moment, but I think I should be able to sort him with paint and a bit of cleanup. And as always, would love to know if you love / hate / are indifferent towards it Scarp

Does he have some sort of sherpa hat? Or some sort of Peruvian thingy?
I heard of space marines. Apparently, now there's space sherpas.
Jesting aside, how do you make your GS obey you?

Hahaha, yeah, it's based off a hat my friend wears all the damn time. I thought a nice little plot point could be that RiffRaff knits in her free time, and stupid hats are a nice little connector between the two of them About green stuff - I'm not really that great with it, so there's no doubt a lot of better advice out there. Apart from decent tools, though, I've found that the two most important things though are lubrication, and patience. The tips of my tools spend about half their time on the GS itself, and the other half in my mouth, or a cup of water. As long as it feels smooth when you're working, you're doing it right. If GS sticks to your tool as you're working, you'll wreck whatever you've done so far as you stretch it out of proportion. The second bit, patience, is also vitally important. Get the rough shape down, and then use lots of small movements to slowly smooth the GS where you want it to be, rather than big, forceful strokes. A friend on another forum described it like this: "You're not pushing the GS around, you're stroking it gently until it ends up where you want it to be". Yeah, he's a bit weird like that Patience is also important in just giving yourself lots of time to work on something - work in layers, and give it time to cure between sessions, or you'll smush stuff you've already done. That's especially true if you're working in layers, like putting pockets on trousers or the like. Coop's jacket, for example, probably took me about 3 sittings to finish - work on several projects at the same time, so you've always got something going! Final tip: These bad boys. Cannot tell you how much decent tools - in particular these soft tipped clay shapers - will improve your sculpting. Unlike metal tools, they're naturally resistant to GS sticking to them, and you can lubricate them less often. Hope that helps, it's a couple of small steps, but they really work. Sorry bout the text dump! Scarp p.s. as always, would love any comments people might have about the hat, especially if you don't like it - criticism, best way to learn, love to improve etc etc. you've heard it all before

What color are you planning on painting the hat?

Post by Scarper on Feb 11, 2011 10:18:08 GMT -5
This colour! He's now (finally!) done, I think. His neck needs an easy GS fix, which I will get around to eventually. I reckon I could have painted his face a little better, but at this stage I'm ready to accept it. I like his head a lot more than the previous - I reckon it fits his character much better. Hopefully you'll like it too! Please comment, whether you love him, hate him or anything inbetween. He's been kind of a labour of love, and I'd love to know how I could improve. Thanks again for all the input so far, Scarp

That hat is awesome. I have one myself, it makes up for the lack of hair. Good job!
