This is a project log for 'Ridgeway's Remnants' - a scavenger force made up of the remains of various guard forces abandoned during an evacuation from a war torn planet.
They use a lot of improvised gear, tend to be pretty battered and weathered, and favour sneaky tactics. Let me know what you think!EDIT EDIT: The first few models on here are around the 3rd and 4th I [/i]ever painted, so skip to the last page to see something half decent [/color] (Pre-edit question answered below: Hey again everyone! was hoping you could help me out with some ideas this time! The army I am (very slowly) making at the mo is based off the remnants of various guard forces that got left behind on a planet that was overrun. They're cadian models, but I'm trying to convert them pretty heavily. Basically, what do you think guardsmen might do to their armour / weapons / selves if rules on uniform broke down a little? They haven't gone primal or anything, but there are no commisars around, so I was looking for conversion ideas! Heres a couple i have so far: - Unit markings are a coloured stripe painted across previous unit marks - Various lasgun conversions used so that the guns vary a little - Cigarettes, cigars etc. - Home made scopes on some lasguns - Various heads: some gasmasks, some helmets, some catachan - Some bayonets, daggers etc. are notched - Some guns wrapped with 'duct tape' grip - Graffiti (but no real ideas for this!) - Some cloaks, some packs But I don't feel like any of this is really getting the theme across. Any ideas on easy to convert stuff with a limited bits box and some GS would be brillian Thanks!)

Maybe the officers have rubbish CCWs becasue they can't power chainswords or powerswords? Like planks of wood with nails in or clubs or something...
Graffiti could be cool, just on their armour. Kill markings or something...
I'm not sure there's much more you could do other than what you've written....

Ha! I love that idea - makeshift close combat stuff would be really easy to do, and really help with the whole theme. Exactly the kind of thing I'm looking for already, thanks
Keep the ideas coming please ;D

I agree with Rewolf. I can't find anything else to put in, except for maybe GSing (Green stuffing) some facial hair on. If your using the Cadians (which, if I remember the thread correctly, you are) then usually those kind of regiments (the ones with lots of strict rules on everything!) would normally disallow bears and musaches. Give every third man a small beard or something! Could be cool

Improvised Weapons is easy! Use the shovel and pick,as fuel for the chainsword will be scarce these Antiquidated Weapons will slay in the Emprorers name!

Make the armour potmarked. Maybe file off a shoulderpad (Which the soldier has lost somewhere). Perhaps try and make some 'plating' out of greenstuff (ie roll it out thin and flat, cut out squares), paint them silver and it's improvised armor plating . Put over crotches, thighs, etc. Try GSing an eyepatch or two... If you can find the right kind of foot to convert from, maybe replace a boot with a bare foot?

Thanks for the ideas everyone! I found out that hasslefree have a close combat sprue with a bunch of weapons like hockey sticks and clubs and stuff which could look awesome / ridiculous, might try that out. I like the beardy idea too - will probs have a go at some stubble with a grey / flesh tone.
PLUS definitely going to have a go at filing off some shoulder pads and changing the armour. Would a small drill be a good idea to get hold of?

If you watch the troopers from the movie full metal jacket, you'll see how they treated their gear. One has a peacemark on the helmet. One has some bullets taped to it. Just paint "boom" on the helmet of trooper with the GL and give him some extra grenades. Stuff like that will do wonders I think.

I'd look into Fallout 3 if I were you. Plenty of inspiration there.

I love that game! Played if for moooonths until I lost interest in like February waiting for the Pitt to come out. I'll give it a look again, see if I can come up with any more ideas. I'll see if I can find a copy of Full Metal Jacket online (through entirely legal means, of course) too. Cheers guys!

Give them trophys taken from dead enemys. Not necessarily like heads or fingers or anything, but weapons, like a tau pulse pistol or a knife made from a scything talon, and equipment, like grenades or scanners from other races.

So you essentially want your guardsmen to be all things at all times...
Something that I think would be neat would be an ig army based off of the colonial marines from the movie aliens. Conversion work should be simple. I might post some concepts if you'd like me to make them.

i would say
1- use WHFB marauder heads (especiually the horseman heads), as the beards, piercings, hairstyles lend an unkempt appearance to the unit (also try the pesaent heads from brettonians, and empire flaggellants) 2 -mix in catachan bitz, 3- use fantasy CCW's
i also agree with the other posters on adding, battle damage, kill markings, grafitti, looted equipment, stubble, and tattoos (necron abyss/midnight blue is great for tattoo ink)

I also discovered that the Gretchin hands on their CCW are the same size as a guardsmen, you can chop them at the wrist, they have plenty of potential.

So you mean only their CCW hand is the size of a guardsman's hand, not the pistol hand? That's hilarious

It will work but the pistols seem a little too ork-y

Just remember that in the trenches, it's not the guns or bayonets that kill the most men. It's the shovels.
How about GSing a few trenchcoats on some guys? Maybe make them look tattered a bit around the tails...

I did this with my guard army. I just mix and match whatever I want to them, give each squad a little backstory and work with it. I find it best to make each squad uniform in their uniqueness, that way you can have rugged vets from all over the galaxy and still have a nice army. Its kinda ugly when you have too much random in an army, uniform has to there somewhere. The idea of beards and stuff is great, so is the improvised weapons. Tell you what get yourself a Primer, if you can arm a guy with a toothbrush and a tin can then you sir are greater than auld Yarrick himself!
