3-5 Chimeras in a line are REALLY hard to stop in their tracks I've found myself. You've got me there, my games are usually in the 750-1000 range so I never see more than one. As for the smoke launcher question, I'm going to say no you can't, but until they say so in an errata it's a nice little loophole you can exploit! (unless I also missed something).

My Chimera survived front, side, and rear shots for three turns, two without smoke, all from Tau broadsides and Hammerheads.
Very poor rolling, but still!

This threads got me thinking about making up a mechanised force. It sounds viable, and fun. I'll come up with a list later, but right now I'm thinking of a sort of guard equivalent of Speed Freaks! It'd be Some force that's characterised by their love of charging at full speed on the advance. My guys are kitted out and painted as urban combat specialists, and each guadsman's had a night-vision visor fashioned on the helmet, and I like the idea of a force that screams through the pitch-black streets in Chimeras as Valks carrying specialists streak through the sky overhead. It'd have to be pracical, but it sounds like Chimeras work not just as transports, but as fire-support. Is it generally considered worth upgrading theweapons a bit? As a concept, I'm thinking that some troops will get closer than others, so heavy flamers for the Chims fit the bill for them. Otherwise it's HB's and multi-lasers. Heavy stubbers look pretty tasty. I'm umming and ahhhing about Valks. My gut tells me Vendettas, for 30 points, would be better option since the Chimeras and their cargo will spit out a lot of anti-infantry goodness. But I can't help but think Valks are biiiiig shiney targets, and I find it hard to think they wouldn't be targetted as a priority by the enemy. AV12 could be got through by a lot of things. I'll come up with a list anyhow and submit it for criticism!

A quick question - the models firing from the top hatch, do they have a 360 degree firing arc or can they only fire from side arcs (ie the lasgun firing ports)?

Well tombworld I'd suggest that if you were to make a mechanized force that you remember that the chimera isn't an apc like the rhino, its an IFV (Infantry Fighting Vehicle.). Whereas you really lose nothing by driving a rhino at full speed every turn of the game a Chimera is a relative waste of points if you drive it at 12 inches every turn. If you plan to advance a lot at a steady paice seriously consider taking chimeras with flamer sponsons as you will be able to shoot your turret and pintle weapons every turn, but if you want to really "take the fight to the enemy" at break neck speeds you'd be much better off just using valkyries instead.

Flamer sponsons? I must assume you mean hull mounted flamer... ;D

I would think 360. The old lasguns had a 180 on either side so it's not much of a stretch to just make it 360.

I actually see it as being about 300 or so: Everything except the arc blocked off by the Turret.
