I recently got a look at the new IG Codex and it turns out that there is no longer an option for sergeants to take lasguns, boltguns, shotguns and storm bolters. The same goes for officers except they can still take boltguns. Does this mean that my current IG army is no longer "legal" as all my officers and NCOs are equpped in such a way

Yup.
But look at it from the bright side, you are not alone. There are quite a few in here that will start redoing their sgts and some officers.

yeah, just it kind of sucks. i would much rather be putting more shots down range as opposed to having an extra attack in close combat. also i really like the look of all my models having long range weapons. lastly i was working on doing some conversions along the lines of this

yeah he can still have his plasma pistol and power weapon. you can actually give them to normal sgts now. there isnt an upgrade to make them a vet unless you take a veteran squad

I'm now having to scour ebay for Praetorian and Mordian Sergeants to replace all my lasgun armed NCOs - I think GW messed this one up just arbitrarily ruling they can only have pistols and CCWs It's one of my few complaints about the new codex (yes I've seen a copy - roll on May!)

WHAT?! No more shotty? S***! I just made a sergeant yesterday with shotty!
Damn you GW! (for the countless time this month) guess it'll have tot be counts as lasgun, I mean, ap and st are the same, right?
Oh, and lchexl, you'll have no problem using him in games, your opponent will look at himm, and his eyes will melt from the awesomeness ;D. Welcome brother, to the IGMB!

It does indeed suck, most of my Sergeants just lost an arm or two. The rest of the codex more than makes up for it though.

yeah, I actually have an AWESOME sergeant dual wielding a plasma pistol and bolt pistol whilst jumping sideways. I call him Neo, fear his poker face. ;D

lol, neo's pocker face.
And I too am irked that GW thinks all Guard sergeants should use a pistol and a melee weapon. That's so dumb! My army is a rifle battalion. RIFLE!!! And shotguns gone too? jeebus, Games workshop! Why? WHY!?!
It sucks that now if you have a special weapon, you only get 8 lasgun shots at range. Pistols ARE NOT weapons of war, they are weapons of self defense and close quarters combat, but they simply have no place on an open field.
You know who I feel the most sorry for? I feel the most sorry for our recently induction of nearly 4 or 5 DKoK players - their infantry don't come with a sergeant with a pistol and ccw, they have to waste even more money now finding ways to get Dkok sergeants to use laspistols and ccw's...only grenadier sergeants get them.

Well the really funny thing is that the options state "So and so may exchange his laspistol and/or Close Combat Weapon for the following:"
So I'm really tempted to convert a sgt wielding dual shotguns for free just because the rules say I can!
On a more practical note, Its rather simple to just count a sgt armed with a lasgun as having a shotgun if you don't want to reconvert him.
Also Ichexl I'm very impressed with your SAW bolter there, I have 3 guys in my army equipped the same exact way (Stop stealing my themes!) that I now need to redo. I really don't want to redo one of them though as he was the first dude I converted for the whole army!!!

What I think is worst is that regular sergeants can have bolt pistols, plasma pistols, and power weapons but not something as mundane as a shotgun or lasgun. I seriously doubt most Guard regiments issue bolt pistols, plasma pistols, and power weapons to non-officers

All my sergeants had rifles so i'm feeling the pain. Broomhead, shouldn't your officers be carrying Webley-Scotts?

Read the codex; Have mixed feelings about it. There's not even half the tactical flexibility I was expecting(yes, I'm REEEALLY missing the doctrines right now!). On the other hand I did go through the Tank section with expressions like "Wow!" and "Cool!" and even a "Cr*p!"(For the Deathstrike. It's probably the worst tradeoff I've seen for points better spent elsewhere; In my opinion it could be an interesting objective for a battle however, with it being neutral and the first possessing it can start the countdown.). Some options were plain weird, like the one discussed here. I'm really sad the Commissar Lord doesn't allow commissars for 20pts as was rumored and further sad there's no platoon customization(They definitely blew it there). The SAW gunner conversion is cool, I'm definitely trying my hand on that(Are the mags custom?).
@aeon You're absolutely right about the pistols. In most armed forces they're reserved for officers above the rank of Master Sergeant(or equivalent). But I seriously doubt the people who brought us blocky, silly tanks and who apparently think battles are fought with ranked formations(I mean, seriously... "First rank FIRE, second rank FIRE" is hilarious to the point of weeping; couldn't they have named it "Switch to full auto" or something?) have even a remotely passing idea of the futuristic(much based on modern) warfare they're attempting to simulate on the table top.
*Snif*, Storm Bolters*Sigh*...

yes Yarrick still has his.... For some reason all Boltguns and Stormbolters issued to the IG for the last 15+ years have been confiscated and returned. I've ranted already twice on seperate threads and can't bear myself to continue to complain. All of the new rules out weigh this very major slap in the face. But why I cant give my Sergeant even a lasgun is beyond me. I think it has to do with one of the "orders" but whatever...

and for some reason I am most upset about Commissars loosing their laspistols...
even though I do have some stormbolters that need to be convered back to bolt pistols.

I unfortunately can't claim ownership to the SAW gunner I posted. I stumbled upon him on a fellow Canadian's site and have been inspired to follow suit and make some of my own. The site is www.szetor.com/gallery/SZR_Defence for all of you interested. His IG are modeled after our troops ^_^ As for the mags what i had planned was to get a few M249s from this site here... www.theassaultgroup.co.ukThey have some great alternative models and a lot of backpacks and other gear that is scaled for 28mm not to mention they are cheaper than forge world

I'm thinking of using the WWII Panzergrenadier minis for my Emperor's Fists (I'd use the Imperial Japanese ones, except that they don't have trenchcoats).

What there doing here is saying that space marine sergeants can't have bolters!
But if course, they wouldn't want to hurt the SMurf players feelings, after all, it is Space Marine 40k.

Aeon has a story about how useful it was once the squad was gone in the heroism thread. And I like the shotties, and would put some on my troops, if they had been buffed to S4 like the marine versions...
