I find a single squad can be rather useful. They can hand out a decent amount of punishment with those bolters, so I have a tendency to take a squad of them against Orks. Also, the cheap Heavy Flamer and the 3+ Armour save never hurts.
That said, I would say taking a unit like Seraphim would be a much better investment.

Reds, would you use a half squad or a full squad?

Half at 1500pts. Too expensive otherwise. Even at 2000pts, I would still only take half. It's an Aux unit, not a core unit, so I don't need it to be large.
Seriously, though, you guys should be asking Melissia and Sister G about this...

I've used a squad of SOBs in a rhino and used them to deal with drop troops and infiltrators aiming for the back of my lines, bolters on rapid fire with bs4 are always handy to have on hand as interceptors.

.....
Where do you GET all these avatars!?!?!?
Anyhow....I've always wondered this:
You how that organization-who's-name-I-cannot-spell-but-begins-with-an-E is forbidden to have Male soldiers? Then are the Red Redemptionists just Imperial Cultists or are they formally part of the SoB?

The Ecclesiarchy?
It is prevented from having a standing army of men at arms. It can have male soldiers, but they are temporary militias, fanatics, etc, rather than a real army.
See US White Dwarf #293.
As for the red redemptionists, I don't have the Inquisitor game book, so I wouldn't know.

So...what happens to them after they win?

They go back home I assume. Essentially they just rouse a rabble into an army of zealots, give them some cheap weapons, and march them into battle. Those that live go back home with the satisfaction of serving the emperor.

its so the Ecclesiarchy never gets too powerful and begins a second reigne of blood like the one started by the loathsome Goge Vandire who proclaimed himself both High Lord of the Administratum and supreme Ecclesiarch and attempted to seize the throne from the Empeor
after that the Ecclesiarchy was forbidden to have a porper military of their own but thanks to a loophole they formed the Sisters of Battle from a sect that once called itself The Daughters of the Emperor who took it upon themselves to protect the faith in a galaxy full of heresy.
The Ecclesiarchy may call upon the other branches of the Imperium for aid(like the Imperial Guard) but only the Sisters of Battle are under their direct command.

And the Emperor has blessed the Sisters with his miracles ever since.
Read up on the Age of Apostasy to learn the general backstory of the Sisters. Note, however, that the Ecclesiarchy had its beginnings in the Great Crusade, and was officially formed shortly after the Horus Heresy (although it did not hve the name of "The Ecclesiarchy" at the time IIRC).
