I am the 58 Octopus legion. I colour my men purple for the fact that they are after octopus. They are from a poison gas planet but are good in snow warfare so I put snow on there bases. I find that the cutting of the sticker things so I can make a "58" is tireing. but if you call my army homosextual or anything else you will be taking that back when all your tanks are killed by my lascannons. muhahaha

Got plenty of armies, all based on different historical periods, like 192nd KLSB (Kaiserlichstraftbatallion) or Imperial Penal Battalion, based on the German Penal Units of the Eastern front and inspired by Sven Hassel novels etc. I find just having a good sounding unit designation sounds fine, and a brilliant place for 40K style names is that page in the 3rdEd codex with all the drawings of diferent units, its jam-packed with great names if you can't think of any (which I never can) like Tangar, Ocanan, Gantor, Paladius, all sound great and theres loads of them.

I'm pretty new to tabletop 40K, but I've been working on my own Guard regiment for a while now.
The Imperial Palatinate Legions. I haven't gotten the chance to give them much fluff, but they're partially based off of the state-trained militias of the Warhammer Fantasy Empire and partially based off of German Panzer divisions of WWII. Hopefully I'll get the chance to flesh them out some.

I call mine the 2nd SRB TF (Special Reaction Battalion Task Force). It consits of 6 Companies and 1 Airwing. This allows me to mix and match for the enemy I am facing.

My army is the Cobalt Irisian Guard. It's supposed to be a hodgepodged army under the Ordo Malleus that has mercenary elements to it. I know it might not make a lot of sense, but I put a lot of thought behind the backstory, and I ended up getting a lot of prepainted minis due to my painfully obvious lack of money

Meh. I have many armies partially painted, all named. My urban force is called the Orellian 1st. The agri world army is called the Jumael 1st "Lucky Aces", yes, they were fashioned after the 3rd edition entry. My current all different heads army is called the Wylowace 2nd. I have a desert trooper somewhere who is part of the Larison Expeditionary Brigade. If you will take my advice (asking for it or not ) try to avoid special names, like the Lucky Aces. I just used them because I saw the conversion potential, nothing more.

Company I, 147th Vostroyen Firstborn Infantry.
Given the size of the Empire, and the millions of worlds to recruit from, a number like the Cadian 8th is ridiculously small. The State of Pennsylvania fielded almost 200 regiments for the U.S. Civil War. The 147th being one of these.
While the idea of regimental formations is quaint, either divisions or corps would be a more efficient formation. If you stick to regiments, one would need bar codes to sort them out, or do what the Brits did in WWI and have 30+ battalions per regiment.

lol yer "sir what shall we call this new planet" "um ....er..... bloody hell this is geting harder and harder er .... 501" "shouldn't we start at 1 sir" "no 501 and get lost" That suspiciously sounds like Hitler when he joined the Nazi Party. He was member 550, but the 500 was just added to make it seem bigger. In other words, he was number 50.

mines a battlegroup there nameless and do not apear on the munitoriums lists as anything other then a series of order numbers for new recruits, feeding, equipment, and wages as the work specficly for a single inquisitor so go by his name as task force lazarus, and dont actually exsist on paper.
