I'm so happy to see your blog resurrect! I can't wait to see what you spew out this time! The only gaming problem I can see is that they will be harder to place between terrain pieces and other minis, since it will take up more space. Thanks Gerner, good point about terrain. That made me consider what my own boards usally look like as far as terrain goes and yeah, that might be a problem to contend with. The beauty of this all is it would be easy to make another more standard sized base for games that are terrain heavy. Good to see you're alive and kicking Yeti! I see no problems at all with a larger base, the way I see it it puts you at a disadvantage, so anyone that has issues with it ar either insanely pedantic or stupid. Right on Shostak! ^ What they said, although anyone complaining about a larger and prettier base is obviosly a moron ;D WELCOME BACK DUDE! Thanks 3ff3ct! Good to see you again. Welcome back Yeti I can't see any issues with it and if the people you play against are there for fun as well then why the hell not??? I'm quite looking forward to seeing what you have planned for this little project Major Downer Thanks Major! I'm actually dreading this a tad, having to order materials from far-flung websites, but I think I'll be glad I did it in the end.

Hey Yeti,
New user here, I created this account just to post a thank you for the inspiration I needed to finish my old Valhallans! I even scheduled a game at my local comic book store for Tuesday! I have overhauled this weekend and hopefully will have all my miniatures stripped of paint by tonight. I've based my design on the dip technique. I'm loving your scheme, and I'm thinking of using the same stain, but slightly different color variations. I was thinking a light blue coat with grey thermals/pants.
Quick question though, are you painting the stain on or using the complete submersion method, then spinning it off? I'm used to the submersion for my wee Tomb King army from waaaaaay back so thats my go to, but I wanted your ideas. Any ideas for my scheme or changes you might think of would be more than appreciated. Thanks for this post!

When entering the underhive, visit the sanity-checking station.
Here is a ball point pen and a pad of sticky notes. Now go kill Matt Ward.

Thanks DadCRO! I'm pretty sure I passed the sanity check, but I'll take a shot at Matt Ward just to be sure. I hope ball points are sharper than they look though.

Any ideas for my scheme or changes you might think of would be more than appreciated. Thanks for this post! I think your color scheme will look good, however, anything that is blue will become very blue. So just be ready to try out a test model and don’t be afraid the experiment. A major factor in your success with this is color theory. For example, I use GW Rotting Flesh which inherently is white-based color that has a touch of yellow and blue in it (it leans towards green but isn’t quite there.) When you add the stain to it, it shades a lot, since areas with little stain stay more yellow-ish and the rest runs shades of blue (yellow paint plus blue stain equals green.) The beauty of the stain is it does what it is named and will not run off. So, finds a few colors that “react” to the stain as mentioned above and you’ll be very happy. As far as application goes, I brush everything on with a large round brush. I think my notes earlier mention that I work from the top of the model down, trying to continue a wet film the whole way. There will be times where you’ll have to absorb some pooling with a brush. The trick with that is do not scrub. Just try to absorb what you can with a dry brush, say, along the edge and the remaining stain will even itself out. I intentionally tried a water-based stain to avoid the whole drill method. No drills, just a fat brush. Feet tend to take the most pooling stain so if you can go a bit brighter shade on the boots it’ll give them some pop enough that they’ll stand out. Don't worry about heavy stain around the feet, just let it dry and consider it free primer for the base. In all of this it pays to be brave. Just do the above and don’t second guess what you see as it dries. Remember, this is water-based stain so you can easily paint over it again and even restain some spot areas. Post pics of your progress and I’ll help along the way best I can! Welcome aboard!

Nice vets w/ pig iron heads really well done Thanks Commissar Col.! Good parts equal good results. I have some new Vets in the works now, a little different, using a lot of different parts from a few places.

Yeti! ;D *Squees with delight* It's good to see you back on the board! I've missed your posts. What awesome do you have in progress to share with us? Hey Trooper! I've been pretty buried with work and school, I've been plodding away on an Imperial Navy fleet for BFG through the Fall and I helped formulate my stain proces along with a color scheme for my buddy's Chaos WHFB army. I'm now on Christmas break and looking to sink my teeth into a few things: finishing the fleet (and getting some BFG in), getting some more Valhallan squads done, getting a Valkyrie airborne and tackling some Warmachine and Hordes I have sitting on my painting desk.

I know what you mean about school... I pretty much didn't get anything painted until fall semester ended. That BFG fleet is looking quite sharp! I can't wait to see more!

Post pics of your progress and I’ll help along the way best I can! Welcome aboard! I actually went with the rotting flesh, for coats, but I'm thinking of Ice blue for pants/hats. The guns are probably staying white with boltgun metal, and the boots/gloves are watered down bestial brown. The white with the brown gives it a cool leather look. The stain on top of that works out well. I'm sort of ganking your color scheme, but I can't get over how good they look. I'll post pictures when I get squad done.

Ladies and Gents, I wish you all a happy and healthy 2012. Over the Christmas break I started a few projects while finishing this Imperial Navy Fleet. I have a few odds-and-ends BFG stuff to top off and then I'll be getting another Valhallan squad underway. I have the plastic Valkyrie laid up and a Hordes Legion of Everblight warpack on the paint table. Here's a shot of my Naval battlegroup and there are more pics on my blog, Sarcophagi sarcophagi.blogspot.com/.

Whoa! I really like the winged skull bridge conversion on the Mars (yes?) battlecruiser! Good eyes, Trooper! Yes, that's a Mars battlecruiser, designated Phoenix. The bits are a GW skull and 2 winged insignia from the IG tank accessory sprue.

Oh yeah... I just noticed the half winged skull on the sides of the wings that come out of the body of the cruiser... That's a really neat detail!

Where is Yeti? I want More Guard goodness!... NOW! Major Downer Howdy fellers! Howdy Major! Nice to be missed. I've obviously been lurking but not very active in 40K. I went silent, waiting for the next ed to drop, which it did and it seems good. Weird timing, I'll be getting my rulebook this Monday and starting up the paintbrushes again. Also, it seems likely my Nurgle Marines will be hitting the board again too based on new models and rumors for the impending 'dex (i HATED the last Chaos dex and refused to play it). During this downtime I've been playing the eldritch skirmish game Strange Aeons and really loving it. I'm pretty active on the Lead Adventure Forum to that end. I've been able to spend time really painting those models, instead of stain-assembly style with the IG masses (not that there's anything wrong with that). If you want to see some of my Strange Aeons work, check my blog in the link below, there is a fair amount. Otherwise, I'll have some more IG troops and a Sentinal posted soon. Best, Yeti Scene of Horror made out of an empty dental floss container and spare bits Agent Petri readies his "Chicago Typewriter" against a Daemonic Hound! My Threshold Team!

Fantasy Flight Games makes a "Bag of Cthulhu" which has 2 different-sized Cthulhu markers to use for various games. Modellers for Strange Aeons and pulp skirmish games find them extremely handy as spooky idols, large statues, etc. I could see Nid players use them for Cult statues, Chaos players for, I dunno, their sun room, etc, etc. It a fantastic deal for what you get and many use them right out of the bag since they are ink-washed to being with. Having painted 4 of them already I can say they paint up beautifully, either as bronze or stone. I intend to paint one as "alive" too. new.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_news.asp?eidn=437www.amazon.com/Call-Cthulhu-COC-Game-Statuettes/dp/B002DZBKFY

Well, damn. Finally got my new 40k book. I love this thing and it has inspired me to take it on vacation with me next week to the shore, along with a small IG detachment for some learning games with my buddy, who will also be vacationing at the same place (he runs Nids).
I suppose after I get back I'll have to start cranking out some stuff again. I have a large section of Valhallan mortars that I've been wanting to get underway for a year or so.
Anybody have any experience in this new edition with mortars? Worth it? Not? Who cares?
