=D yeah the idea just came to me as i was finishing it all up. your comment on how the metallics will take away from the sickly weathered look came into focus and yeah, i made it a little less shiny.
im finishing the mobile mortar right now, should be done in about 10 mins, then i'll get to work on the greenstuffed lasgunner guardsman. should have him done in a few hours?
thank god i'm a slight insomniac lol.
oh and for now on would you guys mind giving me an approval rating on my works, say on a scale of 1-10, 10 being something that blows your mind? i wanna get an idea of how well my painting is looking and improving, as well as how it looks overall with what conversions i've done on them. cheers.

fair enough, pointers for me on what to really improve on to make that at least a 7/10?
and do explain the thinning of my paint... do i add a little water to it? or just spread it out more? i'm not sure...

fair enough, pointers for me on what to really improve on to make that at least a 7/10? I think practice is the main thing. I would suggest acquiring something like the box of 3 Space Marines, or something similar, just to practice on (for armour). Want to practice skin and/or materials? get the box of 3 or 5 guardsmen. Xeno goodness? orks and tyranids would be the way to go (especially Tyranids, they give you unlimited cap to colour creativity). and do explain the thinning of my paint... do i add a little water to it? or just spread it out more? i'm not sure... Add a little water to it. I recommend getting something like an old plastic CD cover or something like that. Put a blob of paint on it, and add water with and old brush until you have a nice consistency. Some paints tend to need less than others, so be careful

thanks for the great advice, i'll have to put some of that to use when i go for another run to the store. i still have the 12 last chancers, 2 converted cyclops, 2 heavy weapon teams, 6 plague marines and 4 guardsmen + the greenstuffed guy to work with so i'm sure i wont have to worry about a lack of things to experiment on =] and as promised, here's the finished mobile mortar. took a little longer than 10 mins as i had predicted, but the extra time allowed me to work with drybrushing for shades and washing the different parts appropriately. not tooooo pleased with how the mud on the wheels turned out but whatever, i can always repaint it in the morning when i have a steadier hand. the main color of the mortar is boltgun metal with drybrushing of mithril silver, then the green is a color i picked up at some art store called sap green (close to gobin, but a little darker), then i brushed catchan over it too. the wheels have a little brown brushed onto them to make it look overall a little worn out and heavily used. not too pleased with the quality of these pics, doesn't give justice to my work, especially since i'm down to one crappy light. i need to get my good light back up and running >< hey walrus, what exactly does the thinning of paint do? cuz i mean... the desert yellow is pretty thin as it is, as is the catchan green. would watering them down more just provide like... a very light coat of the color rather than the solid they would normally give? what is the end effect of the thinning?

Thinning the paint helps in two ways, Increasing coverage and ensuring detail. on the flip side, it means it will require 2-3 coats on average to ensure full colour. Trust me, it is worth it.
Some paints don't really need it. I rarely water down my Dark Angels Green...

alrighty, i will give it a go with the next guy after the greenstuffed guardsman.
i've finished the main colors on him now, but the smaller details still need to be fine-tuned, and there's just something missing to the overall look so i'll wait to post those pics til i figure out what else is needed, or what i missed.
i also started painting a barricade that was just a spruce for the death korps heavy flamer team, and that resin really doesn't like my paint... it took 4 coats to get all the spots. you know when you have water, then you add like gasoline or oil to it and the water like spreads away from it? yeah, thats what this resin is doing to my paint >< not cool.
till tomorrow, night all. more pics to come tomorrow night.

well... i did a decent amount of work on the greenstuffed guy today, and i think he's good to go, what do you think? flak armor has nothing on this guy. i'll walk through this guy step by step. Step 1 - initial greenstuff placement: k so i looked at the stormtrooper tutorial and figured i could make my own stormtrooper with the greenstuff i have. i put a little on the legs and feet to give it the look like he had tactical armor. i added the same thing on the elbows too to make him more armored (too bad he still counts as having flak armor). I also added a skull to the right hand shoulder pad for visual effect. The back armor kinda resembles the Dead Space suit, what with the segmented lines. Step 2 - base colors added: i kept the colors pretty basic again just because i didn't wanna mess anything up on the first greenstuffed mini i made. i decided on the all silver gun with the green too, just to give a little shine to him. Step 3 - finalization of details and washes: What do ya think, from what you see in step 1 to step 3? not a bad progression huh? The details were all added after the base colors were finished and touched up, and the skull came out pretty decent but the eyes still have something to be desired... also, since the back armor is Dead Space-ish, should I have colored them lighter blue, yellow or red??? Walrus, suggestions on that? Anyways, that's what I have for now, but I MIGHT finish up the Plague Marine captain tonight, or at least have the armor drybrushed for some visuals by the time I go to sleep. OH i forgot this guy. My girlfriend decided she'd jump on the W40k bandwagon with me since I'm doing them all the time and she got a little curious about them. I gave her a Plague Marine with a bolter and a big belly to work on. This is what she has so far with a little guidance from me. GameStars, the place i get my minis from, has offered to let me work there conditionally as a painting instructor for new painters. I figured I'd start the teaching with my girlfriend to see if I can actually get people to do good work with my instruction. So far so good i think =]

Effective looking armour additions on the Guardsmen - nice work As for your opposing army, I'd have to say Tyranids... always instills visions of a battlefield version of "Aliens" when I think of Guardsmen against hordes of gaunts

haha hell yeah man, i was thinking a little along the lines of starship troopers i'm defs gonna be picking up some gants just for the hell of it, just to paint them to see how they look finished as well as some orks too, like the burnas and lootas pack. get a little of everything to see how they all look after i'm through with them. I am still leaning towards the chaos marines though, the girlfriend loves their look and she's even starting to paint them so that's gotta stick for a bit. no limits on how many different things i can do thought right? get an army of all of them... and take over the world! =D and thanks for the approval on the guardsman. i was worried he wasn't gonna look that great as that's the first time i've greenstuffed something lol. not bad for a first try i suppose =] keep checking back for more updates, i add stuff every night as i do work =]

The guardsman is pretty good actually... I realised what what was wrong with the marine... You are using a black undercoat. White or even grey would be much more effective. Congratulations on the job by the way

I might have to give gre a go but white seems kinda silly since the main armor color is black with the sickly colors on top. Though the sick colors would come out better... Alright I might give it a try on one of my next plagues. What do you guys think of the shading on the guardsman's armor?
Thanks for the congrats but I'm not sure if theyll follow through with the offer yet.

cheers guys, i'll let her know she's on the right track. i'm sure she's read it personally though, as she's been checking my blog herself =]
and man have i noticed the guardsmen are a lot faster and easier to paint than those plague marines >< it took me like 5 hours on the last plague and i'm like halfway done my cadian sergeant already, and that's since posting the latest pics lol.

sergeant is now done, and check the details on the face. unfortunately the terribad lighting i have in my room doesn't show it all but he has eyebrows, near-perfect eyes (for my standards anyways), teeth, and even a tongue =D i really like the how color blending on the plasma pistol came out =] oh and i dunno if it's clear (the wash kinda killed it), but can anyone tell me the symbol i put on the shoulder pad?? =DD i might redo it in white, or another color if someone has a better suggestion. and i decided to give another color scheme a go with this guy. i suppose i can break my group into 2 for now on and call these guys the Arctis Vanguard, and use them in tandem with the Pandoran Legion. Oh, and the fatigues aren't black; they're a dark greyish blue (similar to WWII german fatigues?). Finished results should be up tomorrow night for this guy. Calling it an early night though as I have work early in the morning. Sarah's plague marine is not being photographed tonight as we had some... technical difficulties, shall we say. They will be back soon as it's in photographical condition =P Oh and i numbered off my minis underneath with the order they were done in. I'm up to #21 on the white guy. I lined them up in order and holy $#!+ is there a massive difference from my start to my current minis!

last thing. does anyone know if you can strip a gloss coating off the plastic minis? i don't mind if i have to repaint them after (ie: paint thinner bath), but so long as the minis them selves stay intact and not "melted" from the procedure.
