Thanks for the positive advice!
I think I will try adding a little more mud! These are the DKOK and there's no such thing as too much filth!
It's fairly simple. I use velejo grey pumice (this spreads of the base), I then add small pieces of slate for a debris strewn look. The muddy areas are painted with scorched brown (I'm afraid I don't know the new citadel names) then drybrushed with khemri brown. I paint the rocks with codex grey and highlight them with fortress grey. I then give the whole thing a wash with devlin mud and reaply the khemri brown and that's it!
I want to get another hades breaching drill and another squad of engineers done before I have a game next week, but we shall see. Thanks for looking. Any suggestions on how I can improve things are appreciated.

OMG I do love these models, thank you.
what banner you used? Because I think it is a very good one. I like the emblem on it. Is it a hand paint job of yourself of is it in relief on the banner?

I used the banner from a spacemarine command squad. The emblem is from the forgeworld aquila brass etc. I used it because I suck at free hand! I paint infantry 2 at a time this takes roughly 2hours. I paint everything else 1 ata a time. The deathriders take about 2 hours. The basic hws also 2 hours, the rapiers and breaching drills 3hours and the medusa took 3 and a half hours (this doesn't include time between coats of varnish) Thanks again to everyone who's taken an interest and posted advice

I haven't been on the forum for a while, thought I'd put up an update. Since last time I've added another Command HQ (thanks to welsh paul and magot for the advice in the army list section Also another breaching drill, medusa and have added a platoon command squad to blue platoon. First off the army arrayed for battle (sorry for the shoddy pic, I'm rubbish!) Next up the new and improved Marius Konstantin and squad Blue platoon command squad B68 breaching drill and engineer squad And finally Medusa IV Thanks for looking guys. I'm really enjoying this project, it's the first time I've used weathering and I'm still learning. Next up is a mounted commissar and 4 more deathriders.

Jud, you are improving very, very, VERY nice paint job. I like the basing of your models. A good use of the models pose in combination with the shape of the terrain on the base. especially with the engineers. Well done. looking forward to see more

Lovely, if men mudwrestling in greatcoats could be called that My only niggle is that the base rims are the same as your mud; I'd personally make them a different, darker colour (graveyard earth?) so your nice mud work stands out more. That's just me though. Tell me to nob off if you wish

Thanks for the positive comments gents I'm not sure great coats and mud are sexy lmfao! I've just finished my commissar on mount (got it off ebay, crap cast!). I'll try a darker rim on the base and see what you all think. Again thanks, using this blog is really great for motivation. More pics to follow later.

Hello again. Here are the pics for my mounted commissar. This was a really poor quality cast I did my best to clean it up but there were still a few dodgy bits. I think you are right I painted the rims on the commissar and an infantry member scorched brown. Here's how they look It's amazing how much of a difference that makes! I think it helps "frame" the model and brings out the other colours. All I need to do now is repaint about 100 bases Next I'm going to get a Heavy mortar battery (you can't have too many guns!)

Hi, indeed the darker base rim looks good, I use 75% Scorched and 25% black, so even a little bit darker. But with your base color Scorched is fine.
the commissar relay looks good. I know, from my own experience, that models from e-bay can have that "not so perfect" finish, but GS is your friend ;D And what counts at the end of the day, is the result were you can be proud of and the feeling that you have saved some money to buy other stuff.
b.t.w. I think you made a nice base for the commissar, but on the photo´s it "fell of"... maybe a portrait orientated pic ?
