Being able to apply a decal smoothly, lined up well, and without tears is also a valuable skill (and why you never see me using them).

After focusing on building kits most of last month, I have a new pledge for June; I will paint a 100pt French army for Team Yankee by July 4th. They'll be done up as a combat team from the French III corps, which was assigned to support NORTHAG. That'll let me patch in ally formations from the Germans, Dutch, Belgians, UK, or US as suits my fancy. Everything is assembled and primed and I've already been painting furiously these last few days, but here's the roster of what I need to do in order to finish. French 2e Division Blindée- 17 AMX-30B2 MBTs (5 completed) - 12 AMX-10 IFVs (5 completed) - 19 stands of infantry - 4 Roland AA systems - 4 VAB Mephisto missile carriers - 3 Auf1 howitzers - 4 Gazelle helicopters Belgian 4e Chasseurs à Cheval (thrown in for variety, using British rules)- 2 Spartan APCs (Done!) - 4 Scimitar light tanks (Done!) - 4 Scorpion light tanks (Done!) Here's a group shot from May 31st.

Two weeks left and here's where I am. The vehicles on the far right are all that's left to do (as evidenced by the Roland with the slightly exploded turret). French 2e Division Blindée - 17 AMX-30B2 MBTs (Done!) - 12 AMX-10 IFVs (Done!) - 19 stands of infantry (Done!) - 4 Roland AA systems - 4 VAB Mephisto missile carriers - 3 Auf1 howitzers - 4 Gazelle helicopters (2 of 4 done) Belgian 4e Chasseurs à Cheval (thrown in for variety, using British rules) - 2 Spartan APCs (Done!) - 4 Scimitar light tanks (Done!) - 4 Scorpion light tanks (Done!) The current plan is to power through the remaining gazelles this weekend, then roll into the remaining support units next week. Then during the final week I'll have a decal festival. I should have enough to give all the tanks (and potentially artillery) unique names.

Welp, it's July 4th. Fully painted 100pt French army for Team Yankee. 17 AMX-30 tanks, organized into four platoons of four and an HQ tank. It's hard to see, but each platoon has a red symbol from one of the four suites in a deck of cards. The HQ tank with the flag has a diamond that has all four symbols inside of it. The infantry, with the AMX-10Ps in the background. Each of the IFVs has it's own name as well, and has a card suite symbol in blue- the two platoons are clubs and spades. An unfortunately blurry shot of the Belgian recce company, featuring Scimitars and Scorpions. The plan is to expand this with another four Scimitars and a platoon of recce infantry. Lastly the gazelles. I'm not super thrilled with them, but the color contrast is less violent in person and they're getting blown off the table turn 1 anyway. The next project is going to be a US force in desert colors. I'm aiming for August 15th as a completion date, but about a third of the stuff I need doesn't get released until the end of this month so we'll see.

An update! I've done a lot of painting in 2020, and I've improved considerably (not that I was starting at any level of appreciable talent). My goal for this year is to finish ten standard, 100-120pt Flames of War/Team Yankee armies this year. Last month I completed a U.S. armored company, and this month I'm working on an Italian army with some German support. I'm also sloooowly working on some British desert forces. From left to right, a Valentine IX with a 6lbr gun I used to test out a Tunisian front paint scheme, an Italian L6/40 light tank (will be done up with decals to make it circa Sicily 1943), and an M3 Grant of the 7th Armoured division from El Alamein, albiet with a somewhat ahistorical colors. Since it's been pretty quiet around here, I'll try to post more pictures of my Italians and other stuff as I continue to paint.

You're definitely making me miss my flames of war stuff. Might have to go find me some more brits to paint. Looking great as always keep them coming!

~14 teams of infantry and guns left to paint on the Italians, I hope to have pictures soon. In the meantime, here's some Shermans. M4A3(76)W tanks with sandbags and additional protection on the front. The sandbags are purely aesthetic, since I don't want to bother paying for the upgrade. M4A3s with the 75mm gun. Channel Blues, one of my command tanks.

Alright I'm convinced. You've given me the WWII bug again. Plus I need some cheap models since the whole pipe bursting texas crap is hitting my wallet this month. Do you happen to know any cheaper alts? I got most my infantry last time from a third party but I can't for the life of me remember. Time to do some research.

Oh man, I hope you're doing okay and you've got some heat going now at the least. What nation do you want to pick up? Germans and Americans are the easiest- the starter set is $60 (I can point you to where you can get it 15% off) and comes with 8 Shermans, a US airborne platoon, a German grenadier company, two PaK 40s and a trio of Panzer IVs. It's pretty insane value if you just want to build and paint. Plastic Soldier Company's 15mm often a little cheaper, particularly their infantry. The downside is the infantry is poorer quality than the Battlefront hard plastics and some are wonky on the scale- happy to point you to the right kits if you want. Lastly you can always shoot me a PM, I have a bunch of spare stuff drifting around. Most is WWII, but I have a built-but-not-primed British cold war army for Team Yankee I might unload in the future.

Plastic soldier company is where I got my infantry. I had a late war British army when I was in Pittsburgh of maybe 8 sherman/fireflies, an infantry platoon with extra platoon (I had to get two boxes of the infantry since the first one accidentally gave me 1 infantry sprue and 3 command sprues or whatever), a mortar section, a machine gun section, couple of 6 pdrs and a couple 25s I think? Been a while. But I would definitely be interested in keeping with the Brits. I had them painted up as Welsh guard with Irish guard for the tanks if memory serves. The pictures of those live on bottom of page 6 and top of 7 in my tracian blog. And fortunately as the power went out so did I. The girl and I fled to Chicago for a week (colder and more snow but power) but came back to a busted pipe.

Shermans are hard to find but the Cromwells and Churchills are bang on in terms of size and fantastic kits, and as I'm sure you remember all the infantry kits are good too (it's the Russians, Germans, and US that have funky infantry scales). I'd stick to Ebay and Amazon to track them down, since they're not commonly stocked at FLGS.

Yeah that's one thing I miss about my flgs in pittsburgh was the selection of historicals. I'll definitely start keeping my eyes open for deals though. I wish it was more of an infantry heavy game since that's what draws in (that and artillery) and I could go up to bolt action if I really wanted but grand scale has always had an allure to me. Oh well, I could always throw a few companies together with artillery and just accept defeat.

Most armies can do an infantry heavy (or at least focused list, usually in the form of airborne (Brits have Commandos as well). Heck the best German lists use Panzergrenadier companies as their base currently!

I played a 200pt games of Flames yesterday (a draw due to time limits). I ran my fully painted New Zealanders. Here's my left flank, facing massed german armor in the fields outside of town. You can see my 17lbrs in the center denying the middle of the table to his panzers. And here's my right, infantry (in the building)and Wasps supported by other units advancing through the town itself.

Looks like a hell of a game! How do you like the commonwealth forces over say the brits? I love them. The commonwealth forces fix the morale issues British infantry face. Since I'm not taking Churchills to drive entrenched infantry out of cover, I need to rely on the infantry to do it. New Zealanders and Canadians unpin on a roll of 3+, which means I can get them where I need them when I need them. There's nothing like a painted army on a good looking table. No lie! Next project is 150pts of Russians, I am to have them finished by the 21st.

Cant argue with that, I'm always a fan of infantry heavy forces with the tanks and guns in support so it's nice when they actually have a solid role.
