Evil is merely a matter of perspective. except with me. No matter how you look at me, I am entirely evil to the core. Saves time on all the moral hand-wringing. Makes applying for a debit card a lot easier too. I started IG because my eldar coulde'ny get beyond a 66.6% win average. Three years on, and I'm averaging around 40%. Bugger

I stared as a marine commander for the crimson fist. I loved the fluff and background of the army and built a force that was fluff and commenced to loose probably 2 out of every 3 games. While there were some memorable games in there that were total wins and I did love playing the fluff I wasn't happy that an army staying true to their story line would loose that often.
I decided to look at the armies and go with what my play style allowed. I loved playing a fluff army, but I also like winning. Who doesn't? With the guard you have so many options to fit your own style of play that the possibilities are near endless.
That is when I started collecting my army. I set about the collection and conversion of a total female guard army. This was no small task to begin with since the army HAD to be tournament legal in my mind. Meaning no other models besides the GW models. I also was limited to the figures with in the realm of 40K and fantasy. Well, after 4 years of collection. I am at the painting and conversion stage of the entire army. I have a fluffy army that has a chance to win more often than not.
'Ard Boyz proved that.

Neat. I started with LOTR. But I had always been kinda glancing over at the table next to me covered in guard and tanks. SO, when LOTR started to die out, I made a move to guard.

Hello all,
Like many I am former army and Imperial Guard strike a strong chord with their organization and methodology. The human side is a strong thing.
I actually was introduced to 40k via the novels actually. I had no care for the game and the story line has always come first for me. The enjoyment of the game came much later. I was really hooked by Dan Abnetts "Gaunts Ghost" series, then later by "Double Eagle. Awesome writing.
The human element again. Like many who I served with. Some of them only cared to get the college fund and some only wanted to use it to advance their careers in business. It is an interesting mix, especially when put under duress. Then people who really don't want to be there stand out like a sore thumb. It gives a variety of character that is endless.
I can't play Marines for too long due to the strained psychology. Example- Several Imperial servants sitting around a campfire, exchanging stories about their service to the Emperor and one Marine asks another Marine:
"So, why did you become a servant to the Emperor"
Answer from Marine- TO KILL ENEMIES OF THE IMPERIUM!!
The marine asks another marine the same question who replies with- TO KILL ENEMIES OF THE IMPERIUM!!
Every marine responds in like fashion until the marine sergeant gets around to asking the guardsman simply to be polite.
The same marine asks a guardsman the same question, who replies with- "I was threatened to be shot if not and I was bored with farming anyway".
-Marines looking at each other in astonishment and confusion-
It is the story we can relate to. Little things that make them human we can understand and sympathize with. We all know how hard it is to juggle life and make tough decisions, human decisions. Yet we still have to get on with our duty, not only in the military, but daily life.
I started the game of 40k wanting to play balls hard armies of super human, super-tough killers. That gets boring super quick. It was only my second tournament where every player was playing a marine equivalent that sealed the deal for me. First time I told a buddy I was thinking of playing Guard he laughed at me, then he went off and told others, who then called me and heckled me.
I just think they don't know what they are missing. For starters, this is a great forum and I look forward to talking to you all.

I like the Imp guard simply because their human, you know, you arent commanding some bloody xenos or anything like that ,your commanding some actual soldiers, which I thought was cool...kinda like EE or something.

Besides, your guard army is always, y'know, your guard army. Everything else is just a 'straight from the box' army (with a few notable exceptions) but with IG you can make even the simplest conversion work to produce an unique army.

I used to play fantasy skaven and the 40k equivalent is pretty much IG, as when I started luckily tyranids hadnt been redone yet otherwise id probably be in the hivemind based on tactics. However humanities character and reading several black library books on the IG gave insight into the meat grinding attritiony force the guard represents.
Although i do fully intend to do a coalition force one day with mech tau, Eldar, and my own creations "The Metathran" a tau created space marines legion. This would be my appocalypse scale army.

I liked the whole character of the Guard, and how you can relate to them (being human and all) also, they aren't just a mindless swarm of aliens intent on destroying the next thing they see. They are also customisable- all infantry, all tanks, specialists, drop troops etc.

About as versatile as a sledgehammer.... *Picks up sledgehammer...* You know, a sledgehammer to the balls could really hurt...lol... *Spins sledgehammer around sadistically* *Maniacal laughter* *Slams sledgehammer into rolling thunders...area...* LoL, jk. They are pretty versatile though, I mean, with all the doctirines, armour, and pretty little pea shooters we've got we have alot of possibilities.

No! Look, its not the soldiers fault, the problem lies with the commander, dont blame the guardsmen because your tactics arent the coolest. Just practice with different doctirines and weaponry until you find the best thing suited for your fighting style, commanding style and tactics. Tactics are really all we have.

A variety of things.
Before hand, I was playing a lot of aggressive armies. I played Hordes of Chaos for a little bit in fantasy and I was 24/7 attacking. I got tired of it. Lots of people would just line up and shoot at me. It seemed fun, sitting back, defending, coordinating fire. I've usually before hand been more defensive in games.
So I wanted to do a gun line army. I also get easily attracted to WWII Soviets, in sterotypical terms. Commissars shooting people, not enough ammo to go around, people blowing themselves up, massed troops, tons of conscripts. Those green helmets and khaki uniforms. Its all fun on the Eastern Front. The Guardsmen fell into that chatectory.
Soviets used Cavalry in WWII, a lot of it. IG have Rough Riders.
They (Russia) had a lot of tanks, great ones at that. Their main tank is the best tank of the war, very heavily armored, despite not the most skilled crew inside. Just like the Guard. (Its BS3! Not BS4.) They, mainly in a stereotypical view, used a ton of infantry and sacrificing them like crazy to get things done.
Plasma Guns, hurry, blow yourself up!
They're most like a traditional army. I could have a futuristic old styled army.
I like having numbers.
I wanted to play a force no one else did.
I liked the idea of having a defensive shooter army.
I thought I could be super original and use my WWII Soviet Paintset on them. Only to find out they already WHERE painted. I just painted a guardsmen using my soviet uniform colors, it looks JUST like a Guardsmen in the Codex!!! They are Russians!
I like Tanks. Noisey, slow big, tracked TANKS > Xeno Skimmers.
It reminds me of WWI a lot. WWI is cool.
After looking through the other armies. I really think I choose wisely. I love the guard! I wouldn't want to paint any other army. I like the whole human military theme they got going.

Same here really, I've got a lot of other armies about with background but themed armies, like PDFs, penal battalions etc. only really translate into Imperial Guard and it gives....
Oh what the smeg, I'll stop lying.
It was the tanks.

I wanted to make an army that, by actually attacking someone i would completely throw them off balance and cause them to panic. Plus, I like the fact I could make little commando-squads and i feel as if I'm actually in a war movie or a real war(though i would'nt really enjoy a real war, hell, who does) instead of some star wars episode.....
Okay, I'll admit to it as well. It was actually the sentinals.

Tanks! Big, smelly, mud-encrusted tanks! That's why I started my Guard army.
Also, I am in the middle of doing my 6th Company Ultramarines... but there's no really satisfying tank for the Space Marines. Predator Annihilators with Lascannon sponsons seem to be getting the nerfhammer in the newer Codices (because so much manly firepower should not exist outside of Panzee and Tau skimmer tanks, or whatever GW seems to be doing)... and Land Raiders are typically part of the 1st Company if you look at the much better/fluffier Chapter organization chart in the Insignium Astartes rather than the current Codex. So I'm doing a lot of Bikes & little fiddly things with my Space Marines, and I need a change once in a while.
The current change of pace is a Leman Russ Demolisher with hull-mounted Lascannon & sponson Plasma Cannons. When it comes to the Demolisher, I don't care that GW seems to want new skimmer tanks to be >>>> all when it comes to vehicle firepower at a bargain points-price. I wanted a treaded sledgehammer, in contrast to my scalpel-like Space Marine Bike Squadrons.
Also, I was inspired by the brief appearance of the Macragge 808th in the Uriel Ventris novels. I will create the Macragge 219th to work cooperatively with my 6th Company Ultramarines... they will be a disciplined fighting force that reveres Guilliman & the Codex Astartes.
p.s. I did buy some Vostroyans... but after painting a couple, I decided that it would be a giant pain in the rear to paint an entire army of those guys.
