what are your tactics for fielding snipers?

in my opinion, 10pts for a sniper rifle (in the special weapon squads) is just too expensive, so the only time I'd see one fielded for any reason other than fluff is in armies with the light infantry doctrine. this said, I've put one in my list for fluff, and he actually shot too! typically I dont charge my infantry forward until I reach assault, so the special weapon squads tend to sit and shoot a bit before the demo charges rush out and frag the living daylights of the enemy (hopefully ). if you kill someone with a sniper rifle, remember at all costs to make them take a pinning check - it's the main benefit of using a sniper rifle. in light infantry squads you tend to get more milage out of your sniper rifles, since you can deploy them in a wider variety of pre-deployed (meaning you don't have to move to get into position) spots. this means more sit and shoot. the rifles are also half cost vs special weapon squad ones. beyond that you typically start in rifle range when you infiltrate, so you dont really notice the lack of heavy weapon since you've got 10 more dice you're rolling with the sniper rifle. hope my limited experience helps in some fashion!

you know you can't pick out what specific model you're shooting at with sniper rifles correct? only the assassin sniper dude can pick the specific model he's shooting. just sounded like you're describing picking out which model you target by the 'mainly (they kill) officers or spec/hvy wpns' bit

Can't wait until i get my deathworld snipers. Good old hide and then shoot, will re-rolls. Other than that ratlings are the best we have.

Sniping really just isn't for me. Syn doesn't like anything that isn't rapid fire or ordnance! Or assault... Or heavy weapon... Or blast... Or template... Ok he just doesn't like Sniper Rifles!
Why am I talking about myself in the third person anyway?

lol syn i spose u guys are right in the end whats the point in a strength - (wound on 4+), ap 6, heavy 1 weapon that causes pinning? when deep striked and coupled with 1 demo charge, 2 snipers annoy my cousin to the point he always drives his hammerhead (maybe hell do it with his new manta?) right up close to get a good blast at them, only to get blown sky high from the demo charge! lol its funny! ads

hehe. just remember snipers are good for a couple things:
a) shooting monsterous creatures with super high toughness. sniper rifles wound on 4+ regardless of the targets toughness. go sniper rifles!
b) shooting units with low leadership. sniper rifles make the enemy roll leadership if they do a casualty in shooting. if the leadership is failed, the unit that the snipers did a casualty to are pinned for the whole next round meaning they can take no action and just sit and lose a turn. very nice for other low leadership armies (of which there's not many really but hey, there's always a chance the enemy can roll 10-12 on 2 dice and fail his pinning check.

I have a ratling squad and a special weapons squad (cadian snipers=Badass) with grey rock camo cloaks, but I only break them out for when I play codex, play Kill team(which they excel at. ;D) and rare occasions when I think their expertise is needed.

on another note.. i was breifly reading the schaeffers last chancers. and (although it is rather expensice in points) you could have a squad of 20 snipers. but the point is u can have schaeffer and about 4 or so snipers in a squad, and it could be quite deadly against mounstorous creatures etc.
alternatlily u can have 10 ratlings for 110pts. cheap as chips. i wish i took them last night.

you can always use the cadian sniper models as replacements for ratlings; I know that's always been a popular choice.

I use Light Infantry, but I favour standard issue HWs to sniper rifles, however as I increase my force capacity I may include some specialist squads. My rule of thumb with the Guard, and I am sure that I have seen this somewhere else as well, is 1 infantry squad per 250 points plus another for good measure. As you all know, my philosophy is that the rapid firing Lasgun wins the battles, not the Battle Cannon, although wiping out entire squads in one turn with one roll of the dice is a bonus!

who got what from some WD psycho? I've never read a white dwarf in my life *hangs head in shame* 10 snipers sounds pretty good. the key to anything working in a guard army is number available. if you think you have too many of anything then you actually have just enough

I used to read WD, then I decided that it made it too tempting to swtich armies and/or game variants, so I'm gonna stick with my IG 'dex thankyou very much.

Hah, one day I gotta teach you a trick that I think works on these forums, well it did on the WoW forums, to avoid the swearing filter

I don't think the forum has a swearing filter..I guess it's just a force of habit from my days trolling the WoW forums
