Hi there, Im new on this forum! and there is a LOT to see here Im just starting out @ 40K, have been playing fantasy for a long while. I was always fond of the IG and as soon as my brother decided he wanted to begin with 40K. I knew the IG were my choice. I am loving the 'normal' warrior theme that really stands out as the last spark of humanity amongst all the 'uber spacemarines' and weird looking aliens and stuff. anyways, i have yet to pick up the codex but i have already bought 5(!!!) cadian dudes (shocktroopers right?). On them, im going to unleash my paintingskills and see what kind of scheme i would like. I was thinking of the regular scheme, or the urban blue-ish scheme. Anyways, i will have my ways with them! This thread is to be my log of what ive painted for the Imperial guardsmen and to keep me motivated and to let you see what im working on and to get tips and many things more. Im hoping my stay will be a pleasant one. Even more, im hoping to add something positive to this website and learn from it. Greetings, Loempiaketzer

Oke! so ive played my first battle and now know a LOT more about 40K already! (estimated knowing of all rules is about 25% now ) but enough to get my models going to the assemblyroom and stuff. Oke,... i was thinking about the next theme, i know it might me done a milion times, but here it goes MARS! mars will be my 'home away from home' This will include, red based sands and rocks red camo! (red shoulderpads combined with grey-red camo on the clothers and red or black guns, didnt decide on that one yet) I did not search for any mars-landscape kind of things or what special futures the planet has but i will certainly look into that. So my plan will be to get a trooper and paint him up with camo and see how it looks and offcourse post it here to see what you guys think about him. Once the camo is verified as being 'decent' ill go start painting my first squad! Just wanted to let you guys know im not absent alllll the time cheers, and uhhh, FOR THE EMPEROR! (still needing to get the hang/feeling for the battleshout )

Hello and welcome.
Since you don't know I thought I might let you in on a little background info about Mars in M41.
Mar is currently the primary forgeworld of the Adeptus Mechanicus. Many of the large volcanoes on its surface are dominated by city sized forge complexes, dedicated to the construction of the Imperium's many technological needs. The primary beings living on Mars are the Techpriests and their hundreds of thoudsands of servitors. Mars is also the religious hub for the Cult of the Omnissiah, worship of His Divine Majesty (The Emperor Divine) in a technological sense.
This means most forces based on Mars woud be heavily modified to fit into this theme. Lots of augmented soldiers and tanks, mechanical constructs and clearly seen gothic technology.
On the other hand the colour scheme sounds excellent but does not necessaily have be Mars specific, as there are literally millions of worlds in our great Imperium of Mankind which can have that colouring. The only limit to how detailed you planet can be is your imagination.
Hope this has been a quick but insightful bit of info. And good luck with the painting.
"The Emperor protects"
Starche

If you want to go with a Mars theme you will likely want to go heavy on the use of plasmaguns. As in a plasmagun in every squad, 3 plasmaguns in a command squad and a medic to save against the gets hot rolls, Leman Russ Executioners with plasmacannon sponsons, etc. And yes, you will want to represent a lot of bionics if you can if you decide to go with Mars specifically.

hmmm,... was planning on going infantry heavy with normal guns as much as possible though i dont understand the total dynamics of a 40K game (with all the melta and tanks to go round and stuff so it could change) But i guess,... theyll just come from a red planet somewhere troughout the galaxy or something :/.... just liking the red theme muich and yes,... i like fluff,... but havent read much,... been really buzy putting models together. soon my squads will be view-able to all of you (not much special though, just a platoon command squad with 3 heavty weaponteams and 2x10 troopers) But i thouight... well,... i need lots of em and wanting a playable 500pnt army anytime soon so i can figure out playstyle. anyways,... im jibber'jabberin all over the place. i get back to work now assembling them little infidels!

Oke,. so heres my first doublepost on this forum! *hurray* anyways, was painting this night and it came to my attention i dont have the right colours to finish the model. (needing some flesh colours since ive been painting undead for the last 5 years or so ) But the question is for the greys i use. Im wanting to buy a wash that fits right in with this grey scheme. so,.. a grey wash :/ not to dark pls! what do you guys recommend? And here some pics to show my progress (i love those models!) (its dark here so this one is with flash) and this one was taken with lights all over the place (dont have a lighting box...) so let me know what you guys think of him! (like i said, skin needs improvement but was out of liquid paints :/) and i also would like some tips on painting nice grey tones (only having used 2 tones at the grey now.) tomorow ill post another one which i painted a bit different but is still in progress now and not even comparable to the first one.

I definitely like the simple camo scheme you're going with here, especially if a "Mars" theme is what you want. As for the wash, I'd suggest Ogryn Flesh, even though it is a brown rather than a grey, I think it will complement your scheme nicely. I find that washes too similar in color to the original model add very little depth unless you give it a number of coats.
Good luck, and keep us posted.

thanks for the tip and complement! im going to try that one out, the ogryn flesh. also going to try to use more shades of grey (had to use a very limited colourpallete with the greys at my command (read 1 grey) and yes, i did add some black to darken it, but i hate to create different colours since i cant seem to get the same colour twice :/ anyways, anyone got tips for the basingcolour? grey sand? red sand? purple sands? anything goes, tell me what you guys would do!

hej there, go and stop.... UPDATE TIME! i just wanted to post some pics of my troops. :/ to keep me motivated and you guys informed here it goes first squad as far as its done (stil needing red highlights and camospots, skin and metallic parts AND basing:/) and one with flash and some links to halfway-there-cadians grey troopersalso painted 1 up at the same time i did the sergeant... this is why i decided to go with the red scheme hes just too... 1 colour kind of guy. grey blue metallic... all too much off the same. afterall its a fantasy game, i thought that the red would do better and look cooler next up are some of my special comrads there are some tiny conversions (mainly kitbashed one's) standardbearer for example. and the 2 on the right. the vox caster is 'special'. why? well... its ment to represent my brother 40.000 years later Ill be putting all my friends and heroes in this army, if they would fit the model/theme. so,.... then we have these 2 guys the right one should represent M.Bison. He'll get a flame sculpted in his hand. and will serve me as either a commissar or as a company commander or something like that the other one should represent guile in his everlasting charge stance which hes in like... 70% of the time before he does his famous guile kick (hair still needs to be scuplted on ofc.) now i know... catachan bodys should have fit him better,... but due to the heavy cadian theme, i gave him some armor.. its a tradeoff... i dont want too many muppets in the army that dont belong there so,... hope you liked the update. and i hope the many pics arent a problem for the site/members, otherwise i will post more links and less pics. also, still thinking how to base them... idea crossed my mind to give em red sand with purple grass :/... but then they would turn into LSDcadians or something... some help is very appreciated on the basing manner :/ thats all for todays post

Oke, so i dont have my painting gear at home.. its at my brothers house. So i can only make scenery at home and paint at his place atm. Since im home, how about some scenery to fit the army. Some of it has already been seen in the terrain topics. But ill be posting all of it here and keeping it here. since its the 'base' for my IG'smen. The fully constructed watchtower (just 1 more time) Then theres a WIP toll booth. accompanied by an elevator for the underground part off the base (a.k.a. guardsmen storage / sleepinggrounds - WIP) And offcourse an overall view with a few armless model to see the scale off things and to see how they look together. comments and critisism always welcome

Oke,... little update without pics just to let you know im not slackin'! I allmost got my first guardsmen squad of 10 peeps finished. Only needing to do the eyes and some little touchups and a little basing... im searching for decent looking alien plants that are easy to make. (tips are welcome ) also, ive put some sand on the bases off the scenerypieces so that their bases have some nice sandy looking stuff (and not the walls or stuff like that) Soon (when i get a big brush) ill get to painting the scenery. Ive seen some nice videos on youtube so i finally got the inspiration how to do it Hopefully i get my brush soon! then i can show you all some finished stuff so,... 2 questions; Any tips on alien vegetation? and How long do you take to paint up a piece of scenery? (keep in mind the quality off my models so,... decent tabletop quality.) i usually get it over with very quick and sometimes it turns out good,... sometimes its a disaster. (since i hate painting a little bit, and scenerypainting isnt one of my best things in life ) thanks for the positice comments

ow btw,... sorry for the doublepost,.. and
what should my imperial guard be guarding? I dont think off em as an entire army in an encampment guarding,.... nothing. Im thinking some kind of facility for tanks or enemy intellegence or something... how should i represent this? what should i build for that?
go wild on this one please. normal things i can come up with and i have a wide immagination but help is always better. especially from the veteran commanders out here.

what should my guard be guarding? I wish I had more space in my sig..... thats hilarious! ;D I vote a massive subterrainian (sp?) planet mounted nova cannon, left by the Ad Mech to wipe out enemy planets. They save money on externimatus tax. You'd only have the shooty bit to make, as the rest of it would be underground

hmmm,... got a point there with the nova cannon. *though i dont really know anything about ad mech and the rest off the gang * not having much time to read these days. My first thoughts while reading your comments were in docter evils voice style... giant "laser" This could be a possible option. Only problem is, i think the planet would be made out of metal (just like the deathstar) and all my models already got their sandy bases! (noooooo) and a colourscheme to go with. and i highly doubt that the guardsmen would paint their metal-homeland red :/.... so instead, how would a rocket the size off a church do? just getting the head out off the ground with a lot off equipment arround it as if they were prepping the rocket for liftoff? this could look really nice, right? i think i might actually start drawing some stuff before i get into this ... most scenery i just start on and see where ill get once im halfway there.. thanks for the tip!

jeeeeeej update time, my favorite! (doing happy dance at 1 o clock at night) So, here is my first squad. almost done. just needing some touchups and some metallic highlighting. I didnt know this, but my sergeant is on some kind of epic harddrugs as you can see in the pics. i hope the rest of the squad didnt drink out of the same cup as he did... (once i get to paint the eyes after reading a decent tutorial on that) Here are the pics, comments and critisism always welcome! and yes, i know, pics are bad lighting... hopefully tomorow ill be in time to shoot some new ones WITH the sun in the sky ill see you guys out there!
