I got some models from eBay, and learned that epic basilisks does not mean that the seller thinks that they are awesome... I also got a couple of sentinels, 30 or so guardsmen, three lascannon teams, and a platoon command squad. The sentinels were the coolest, so I (re)painted them first. I have only got a cell phone camera, so the images aren't great, but here is my first foray into painting 40k stuff: Front: Right: Back: Left: It's not perfect, but I was getting sick of retouching up the hydraulics seals for example. Thoughts? Suggestions? Vitriol?

For your first ever 40k paintjob, its really good! Alot better than my first...
Your scheme is good, and its nice and clean and crisp. Now most people on this forum swear by using washes, so I would recommend putting some on the metal parts, mainly a light wash or two of Babab Black, just to give it a rough and used look.
Other than that, good start! Can't wait to see what else your cooking up!

Looking great! As zeke stated, we live by washes also battle damage always adds that extra bit of character to each of your vehicles

I'll look for some of the black wash, I've got the delvan mud, Ogryn Flesh and Sepia, which I have used liberally on some minis that I've painted for D&D.
I'll probably wait on the battle damage until I've got some more painting under my belt. It looks great, but only when it is done well.
I've got about half of the guardsmen (around 30) that I need, of which, twenty came pre-painted, though I'll likely change the colour scheme. The basing on them is really nice though.

Washes are proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy.

I'd wash a brown anyway, looks like a rusty, dirty, greasy tinge to the metal.

New GW wash: Beer yellow. Suggested by Matt Ward. Mat Ward would never come up with an idea that appeases the GW community. NEVER!!!

I've now got some guards painted. One regular, repainted from the used batch that I got, the other a converted Reaper mini. Though nothing like the conversions that I've seen around here. More like remove sword blade, attach las-barrel. Anyway, they are here Too much mud on the face, but I can live with it. And the link leads to a giant image of their back that refused to be resized on Imgur, and I can't be bothered to edit it locally and upload it again. I'm not using that base of the female one yet, but I needed something to make her stand. Edit: A couple of days later, the edits took, and now the image link is just the back of the female guard.

New GW wash: Beer yellow. Suggested by Matt Ward. Mat Ward would never come up with an idea that appeases the GW community. NEVER!!! Also, this supposes that Ward is man enough to drink beer. Somehow I see him as more of a fruity cocktail with a blue umbrella (with Ultramarine symbols) drink type... Paimon, have you had previous mini painting experience? For your first attempt at GW stuff, I'd say they're looking pretty good.

Previously I've painted just under ten minis for d&d. All of them pewter Reaper minis. I have yet to base anything yet, but that's the next step after getting these thirty+ used guys done.
The only thing that I'm changing on the used regular guardsmen is the uniform, which came white and red, which was replaced with Codex Grey and Graveyard Earth respectively. Then liberally smothered in Delvan mud. These guys take about 20 minutes to half an hour to paint. The much more detailed one took about five times that long, but most of that was fiddling with the filigree.
I'm still not sure how I plan to fluff the different minis I plan to include, but coupled with the fact that I plan on getting a bunch of Death Corps of Krieg, I kind of want to make a Kreig 68th artillery regiment list. That is, Terranis guard.

I love the hate against Ward. It delights my jaded and cynical black heart. It sustains me. That said, I like your painting, Paimon.

Thanks everyone. I'll try to get some more stuff up in the next couple of days. I'm almost done my first basilisk, and I've got a half a dozen more guys done, along with a Lord Commissar which is actually another Reaper mini with a rifle glued to her back. I'm actually using that company for a number of stand ins, along with these for some female Cadian looking soldiers. Reaper's chronoscope line has some good ones as well, I'm using these for my stormtroopers and I think that this makes a pretty good female Marbo. In total I've managed to find 9 figures that I can use as female guardsmen of one kind or another. It's not quite the 50% + or - 5% that it should be, but it's not too bad. It was very difficult to find anything that wasn't the equivalent of a chain mail bikini. The special weapons that the stormtroopers have got aren't quite as uniform as they would be if I got GW stuff, but I think that it'll be okay.

A word of warning about Reaper; The models aren't one unified scale. Chronoscope is the closest to 40k, but even within that, some of the models are too tall (the male Time Chaser, for instance). Some of the male Nova Corps troopers are a bit on the tall side, but the female officer is exactly the right size for 40k. I'm not sure if it's been recommended to you befoer, but you can make SUPERB (and very cheap) washes for vehicles out of white spirit and brown or black oil paints. You need very little paint so one tube will last for years. Literally. The advantage is that unlike water-based washes, white spirit has a much lower surface tension so will flow much more readily into little nooks without leaving "tide marks". They give a nice "oily" finish if applied in layers and are also much easier to blend as they dry if you want to manipulate the finish a little. I have done this on all of my vehicles and artillery pieces and would not go back to the standard ink washes for anything except infantry.

Thanks, I am going to go to a craft shop sometime in the next couple of weeks to get some matte varnish, I'll make sure to grab the spirits while I'm there. In other news I ordered these the other day to mix in with my regular Cadians, and they just arrived. Size wise they are perfect, but they had a lot of flash left on them. (Assuming flash is what the extra nubs where the pewter was injected, and not properly severed is called.)

Moar pictures, now with lighting: My "Lord Commissar" with no hat. It's all very heretical. This mini is just a Reaper mini with a gun glued to it's back. The back of the Commissar: One of the painted versions of the mini's that I mentioned in the post above: Blurry back of the same: All of the non vehicle guys that I've painted so far: My Basilisk has been taking up the bulk of my painting time, but I'm almost done.
