Happy new year everyone!
How've you all been, what've you been up to and what are your hobby goals for 2023?
I keep promising to post up pics of stuff I've been doing, though due to hardware issues its a bit of a pain to connect phone 1 > Laptop > SSD > Different Laptop > Upload via phone 2 hotspot, meaning I don't usually have all the bits in the same place at the same time. excuses I know.
What's been great is my lad and I have been playing a LOT of 40k, we did a narrative series of battles where his Nids attacked a human planet, wiping out an outpost, then ambushing a convoy, throwing themsleves at a defended position, and we plan to finish with a couple of skirmishes to take out the artillery and airfield and finish with a crazy huge battle!
The only reason we've not been playing these final missions is due to his Tau army getting big enough to field, so he's thrown Tau at Nids, Black Templars, Blood Angels, Imperial Guard Tank Army, Imperial Guard Infantry Army (mortars are rediculous), and will be facing Orks and possibly Corsairs after that.
In between that we've squeezed in some more blood bowl and some aeronautica imperialis!
Getting a decent space for a games table and storage shelves has been the best thing!!
Trouble is that now I have bucket loads of photo's to sift through, and too many look too good!
In terms of projects for this year, I'm working on my Wraithguard Army of acrobatic conversions*, and I've got a few more DeathGuard to complete that list too.
*the Wraithguard are going to be a sort of harlequin ish thing though I know its not really supported by the lore, but their my models and I can have a stupidly hard paint job if I want one.
So, hope you've all been doing well, and look forward to hearing about your progress and general strife with life n plastic!

Not sure where to post this so just slamming it in here! Aeronautica Imperialis!! The mission was to hunt down and kill as many valkyries as possible before the opponent did, or shoot the opponent. I was the Eldar. The Tau were my lad. I lost. Quickly.

Heresy on both counts. Where is the Imperium of Man?

Heresy on both counts. Where is the Imperium of Man? Smeared across the landscape, it seems. I've actually gravitated back to GW's specialist games. I still love Kill Team, and I got in my first game of Blackstone Fortress in about three years. It's still as much fun as I remember it being, and I was shocked by how many people at the game store wanted to try it. If anything learning that it was PvE made them more interested.

I think the News section might need an update... 10th edition is here!
Personally I like the look of the datacards moving the stats into more logical locations for ease of reading.
The suggestion they're going to keep it simple is amusing. Would be great if they do, but special rules sells models so I don't see it happening. (maybe I'm just sceptical after 35 years and 10 editions..?)
Bigger Terminator.. yeah, cool.
Bigger swarm / horde model. No. No. No. stupid move. whats the point of making the heroes bigger, and then making everything larger so the big-ness is lost?
Also, apparently only white dudes with beards play 40k. I'm a white dude with a beard and am outraged at the lack of diversirty shown in their tutorial. (honestly though it is a notiacable f*** up that they've only included white guys in all of the 10th ed media, which is a shame after recent female divesity stuff like the guard upgrade sprue, lead characters, aeronautica imperialis tutorials etc, [and still think they could do a lot more on skin tone, as its really only the studio sisters of battle army that has any skin tone variety]. Bit of a missed opportunity which is a shame).
so, what are you're thoughts?
And is it me or are the tyranid brain bugs looking a lot like slann mages?

I've not bothered with the video and just read the article.
Personally I think the game has been spiraling down since 7th and this next edition is going to be worst one yet. They made the same claim about simplification and streamlining of rules and datasheets at the start of 9th and less than two years later you need 3 books and 4 pdfs to play your army. And all those books will be worthless in a few months.. I doubt that the next edition will be any different.. we will get free data-sheets to start, and then there will be new datasheets with every new book that is released. So you will still need to either carry 3 books around or buy the separate 'convenient' card-packs for 20 euros a pop, where you have 3 cards per army and a new release every 4-6 months.
Hopefully people will be more inclined to play older editions or miniature agnostic games. Because I don't see myself playing 10th edition at all.

I don't keep up to date on 40K news much, but an article about 10th ed popped into my suggested feed. Honestly, it looks like it has potential to bring new people into the hobby more, which is a good thing.

Personally I’m proper excited for 10th!
Granted I’m a little annoyed that the Guard codex I just bought will be obsolete in a few months but I’m still happy.
40k has been in a bad place for months now to the point my beloved Krieg have been in the cupboard.
I think the rules set had gotten so bloated with all the different Stratagems, Warlord Traits etc you needed a degree in Warhammer to remember everything!
I’m hoping for a concise rule set that is easy to pick up but still offer Strategic thinking.
As for diversity I hear ya treads, there’s loads of girls playing these days and it wouldn’t have hurt to acknowledge that.
Like I said I’m very excited and I’m optimistic about the future of the game I love.

I still enjoy the setting and models, as well as wargaming in general. But the last few 40k rulesets have just not been doing it for me. I feel there is a weird shift in the rules where they want to make the came easily accessible for new players, and interesting for competitive players at the same. And in trying to please those two target audiences they are just throwing stuff at the wall to see what sticks.
Maybe 10th will be better, and I'll give it a try once the rules have landed a bit because it will certainly stay the most popular system out there.

They made the same claim about simplification and streamlining of rules and datasheets at the start of 9th and less than two years later you need 3 books and 4 pdfs to play your army. This is sort of my thought as well. They said it at the start of 8th too, and it rapidly ballooned. If they stay with limited strategems that would actually probably help enormously, but what needs to happen is a shift away from the DLC mindset GW has with product releases. Because the barrier to entry on a new army is so high due to cost, GW generally choose to do incremental releases of books, cards, the occasional new unit, etc for armies to try and extract maximum value for minimal production cost, especially if the rules make it a must-have. The trend of releasing new units or models in box sets before they're available is also a good example of this, since they often assume (correctly) that players will pay extra for the box set to acquire the new, powerful unit even if it means buying more of models they already have. The small scale games using Combat Patrols sounds like a way to sidestep this and entice new people into the hobby at a lower cost barrier, but we'll see if their business model actually changes. But. - I'm glad USRs are back. Moving away from them was a net negative in 8th, and I'm glad they realized it and conceded after an attempt to fix it in 9th.
- The simplified stat and unit cards seem promising. It seems like they brought in some concepts from Kill Team, which I very much love. It also seems like they continue to use AoS as a test bed for 40k, with some success.
- I salute the thinking behind the combat patrol, even if I find the execution suspect. Small, fast paced 40k (if done well) could lower the entry bar and capture some of the intensity and "Big Damn Hero" feeling of Kill Team while giving people more to play with. Locking people into the contents of the Combat Patrols is probably a smart balance move for keeping it balanced, but I suspect it will dramatically curtail interest for people who have more in their collection.
- The Lion model is so damn cool. I'm very much here for the winged helmet.
The release of the new edition is always one of the best times to play 40k. The meta (and the attendant tourney roflstomp lists) have been torn to shreds, everyone's on a relatively equal playing field when it comes to balance, and people are more willing to throw a wide variety of stuff on the table to see how they do. It's not enough to tempt me back in since it doesn't address the two biggest concerns I have with 40k, but a fresh start and accurate diagnosis of some of the afflictions the game suffers do give me cautious optimism for the new edition.

I was talking to someone about it last night and I think my main problem with the new editions is how the expansions are implemented. For me the expansions that were released with 5th ediditon were great. I played cityfight and planetstrike using 6th edition rules as well, and apocalypse was always pain to organize but there are battles me and my friends still talk about to this day. They were all great fun, but more importantly they were optional rules you could use after agreeing to do so with your opponent. Escalation had the same thing under 6th; some optional rules you and your opponent could agree on to use superheavies in your game. My gaming group had a weekly/bi-weekly game night were would play 40k, usually at 1750 because that worked for the ammount of time we had available. And then every once in while you made some plans to play a bigger game on the weekend and use some 'extra' rules. I have fond memories of all of those expansions because they always felt like 40k+.
But when they came with that flyer expansion they took out the 'optional, use after discussing with opponent' part and basically stated 'this is part of 40k now, have fun'. So everyone had to use those rules, and some of the later additions as well, which led to 7th. which had the same problem with those crazy formations; some were fun and fluffy, some were downright broken, but they were all a non-optional part of the game. And the amount of them spiraled out of control very quickly.
I feel that is missing in the newer editions of 40k; people are less likely to buy models that they might not be able to use because they can't find an opponent that wants to play the expansion.. so the rules now state that you can use everything all the time. And for me that is when the 'bloat' becomes a problem, and it also makes the came very difficult to balance.
The problem I have with the new edition is that I don't believe GW will stop releasing expansions and supplements. So they try to streamline and simplify the things that don't really need streamlining or simplifying. But they will still release non-optional add-ons for the game which will in turn re-bloat the rules after a few months.

as 10th rolls ever closer, I'm hoping we see a shift in mentality regarding "rules = Sales" though I can't ever see that happening.
I would love to see codex's coming out without changing the meta and that balance was the focus, I could probably accept minor nerfs to previously strong units and re-focussing on other units in the army list to encorage people to shift around their model collection (ie, before the codex artillery units might be good, after the codex its now the close combat units that really shine).
I'm not sure it'll ever happen and since I don't follow the meta curve I'm not to bothered either - currently making do with the 8th ed datasheets and a mash-up of 5th to 9th ed rules.
I promise I'll post pics of stuff soon!
recent completions include:
Death Guard Army, with a Nurgle Knight very near its final stages (I'm trying a rust effect using a resist medium, really hoping it works!)
Wraith Host is mostly built, about 7 models left to go, and a WraithKnight
My Lad and I have played many games vs his Tau now, so they need bat-reps
My Partner, My Lad and myself played Ork vs Ork Vs Ork in a fantastic game of utter carnage!
My Lad is returning to his Nids to bring up the quality of their paintwork, something I'm enjoying watching
I got some fantastic mad max ork buggies for my birthday including a Mek with radio controlled bomm squigs - they're the best things ever sculpted!
I tried making scenic hills out of logs.. unfortunatly they hadn't seasoned enough and split, a project I might return to though as I have an abundance of logs.
Tau scenery is a thing, so I'm hoping to showcase that once its painted up.
And I got some of those fancy outrider bikes to accompany my blood angels chaplain on bike (after my reivers failed to charge again), Black Templars chaplains are much more reliable for litanies!
so, busy hobbying, not busy sharing!
I hope you've all been well, enjoying summer / winter wherever you are!

I'm curious to see what 10th brings us, I still have to check out the rules that were made available the other day though. A while back I saw someone make some pretty cool rocky terrain from splintered/split wood (ofcourse I can't find a picture now) essentially they cut the wood at a diagonal and glued it to base, and then covered it with some filler. It was made to look like this kind of rock formation: not great for placing minis on, but some pretty cool looking LoS breaking impassable terrain

New EPIC is coming!
I'm curious just how many games development staff GW has, what with 10th ed, Warhammer Old Worlds, Horus Heresey, Age of Sigmar, Blood Bowl etc etc... can they manage to deliver?
In the meantime, I like the idea of little tanks and big robots to go with my little aircraft!

I haven't played either, though witnessed some games a youngster and watched titans unleashing devastation across hordes of infantry and ranks of armour, I think the spectacle and scale really appealed to me! Unfortunately all the players dispersed and I wasn't to see the game again!

I played a few games of Epic years ago.
This new version looks amazing! I guess they already tested the water with Titanicus. Nice to see some mini Sicarans!!
Don’t know why but I just want them!
