Ok! So after being away for a rather long time, I have come back to requestd for bases and requests for painting competitions; nothing changes! I have noticed that the board is a trickle at the moment, rather than the raging torrent it was around the time I took a break. So rather than dam up what creativity we have left around here, I have decided that we need a Painting Friends group. Oooh, friends! Although I need some input; I was thinking maybe set a hobby target of X number of models/points worth of stuff painted in Y amount of time, with whoever meets their painting target put forward for a vote and being crowned 'IG(AM)MB Painting Friends Champion Of The Y'. This way we can paint what the hell we want, to whatever standard we want, in an acheivable yet ambitious time frame. With support from other members too. What do you think?

Sounds great. Hopefully we'll see a good mix of stuff, what with all these new boxed sets, start collecting deals, offers, alternative manufacturers and games out lately. Just to be clear - is any model allowed ; like for people who want to paint X-wing fighters or historical etc. instead of 40k?

Well I was thinking it could be done either as:
A) 'I, 3ff3ct, am to paint a CCS and two squads of guardsmen in one month' then we can set out our own goals. This would be more random, although everyone is doing everything they want. The downside is that people might 'play it safe' and not make the progress they might if we set amounts and get out the Painting Whip. Which brings me to...
B) Have a Bronze/Silver/Gold/platinum level of 'challenge' for troops, vehicles etc with each level being tiered. So 'I, 3ff3ct, am to paint a CCS and two squads of guardsmen in one month' could be classed as a Bronze level challenge, if they were table top standard, for example. I could then improve the standard or the amount painted and 'up a tier' to silver, or again paint more and better to gold, or even more and better to platinum.
Or, as vehicles say, paint a decent russ for bronze, paint two for silver, paint 3 for gold, and convert and paint an awesome command tank for platinum.
I'm thinking of having 'guidelines' for the tiers, with nomination available for Platinum when someone does something that is jaw-droppingly cool, either in quality or volume.
The end result being that we have loads of people cracking on with their projects, getting support, encouragement and advice and generally feeling smug about themselves at the end of the month (or whatever allocated time period.

This sounds like a great idea; I've been painting/playing a guard army for half a year or so. And although I'm in love with the idea of massive waves of infantrymen (or waves of tanks, or waves of both) it's a lot of painting... so anything that keeps me motivated to get my guys based & painted is a good idea in my book.

I don't mind the competition format, but B sounds more complex and involved than A. Meanwhile here is the first fully painted model of my Gladius Strike Force: So would you say that's 'tabletop standard'?

IS THAT MARINE NAMED AFTER CHEEESE!?
The photo isn't great to be honest, although it looks as if you've got some freehand going on there so that'd bump it up a bit.
I'd usually say that 'Tabletop Standard' is a tidy job of a basic 3 colours, wash and highlight. They look good, although nothing overly fancy.
I'd have to pull pics of some stuff and see if we're in agreement.
Some other time though, as I have a cheesy action film, cheese (coincidence?) and wine to attend to.

Well spotted. Mr cheesy had a duel with a squad of deep-striking stormtroopers today; it was like something out of a western. I'll have to start taking more pictures; actually there were a couple more but they were terrible. It seems I have the shakes; either I have to start drinking whiskey or get a tripod or chair to lean on.

If you drink enough whiskey, you'll need a tripod or chair to lean on, photos or not

Sounds good, I think an honesty system/pledge "I will paint my hellhound this month" might be the easiest thing to do.

yay... Now they look the same (ish) !!! All I've done is stick on a few hands, paint a few boys in the right colour green and given them a universal coat of Fasta Paint Red - a couple of hours work which brings the lot closer together as an army and less like a bunch of scrappy models with bits falling off all over the place!

I'm tinkering with the Blitz Brigade now - am kustomisin' five land raiders into either Tog II's or the LCM landing craft. sorta.
I've been making my own glyphs today out of plasticard, really getting to know the uses of the stuff.
only reason I'm getting through stuff so fast is because I'm currently off work.

Any ideas to take you until the end of the month? I'll give it a go: I Nutty; pledge to have completed a squadron of 3 Leman Russ Battle Tanks by the end of April. So that they may proudly bring the Emperor's justice to those who oppose him.

I am in a bit of a conundrum, as I'm going to take part in my local Gw's 'New Army' event thing over the next few months. However, I can use an old army I started with added new, or I can use the new army I have started....
Either way "I, 3ff3ct, 40k Drunken Master and Base Fabricator General, will have 2x units and a HQ painted and ready for 'New Army' event".

OK, if it's the end of this month ; eek that's only 15 days...
" I, cheminhaler, Lord of Alternative Respiration, pledge to paint the last four members of the tactical squad, redo cheese-man's shoulder pad to the new tutorial standard and paint their transport vehicle. "

righty.. well I'm back to work (boo) but did manage to complete the conversion work and most of the basic painting.
Over the next couple of days I'll try and get everything to low tabletop standard and post images prior to detailing.
the tracks for the kill krusha are still yet to arrive so that's waiting in the wings tempting me with its pure win awesomeness .. must stay focussed!

Excellent! I have finished my infantry off for my Skitarii, to a basic block colour paintjob that I can improve as I have time (I am not fielding grey plasic or models held together with blu tac!) I have come undone on the Dunecrawler though as I didn't order any paint to highlight it, so I'll have to wait a couple of days for it to arrive cheminhaler nutty how are you doing?

Slowly getting there: most of the colours have been blocked in, done some shading, etc. They are close to completion but not quite there yet.

The infantry are nearly there. The new flashy, expensive gold paints; retributor armour and liberator armour are helping.
