I think the skin turned out rather well Chem. Well done. I got through doing the first coat on some of my infantry bases today. The sand/rock texture I have gone for sucks up so much paint. I have almost completed a full 30 plus officers though. The shadowsword is calling to me but I am determined to get a decent amount of infantry done first. nutty: I think that it is technically a loveseat...

A loveseat in the grim darkness of the 41st millenium? That has to be some form of heresy

So I think I am happy with the platoon I have been working on, now it is just waiting for a dry day for a bit of purity seal. Have taken a bit of a break from the guardsmen to paint an astropath. May do a vehicle before I move on to another platoon.

Well, I don't have a good camera right now. However, have a grainy Nokia picture of what is on my desk! Edit: Also, have a bonus grainy knight! +++This post is now sealed by the authority of the Commisaricat. This photo-heresy shall cease immediately!+++

Nice, I have that Last Chancer (Warrior Woman?) mostly painted for one of my command squads. I did her back when bodyguards were still in the codex. Great model. Looks like you've got the right amount of grime on the skin, and I like the red and black colour scheme. The lava on the knight's base is pretty tight, were you previously trying to do that on every base, even the infantry ones?

Yeah it's warrior woman. I converted her into a plasma gunner, back when I used a plasma command squad in chimera. I thought about doing lava on infantry bases but decided against it, mainly as I thought the infantry would not be walking over lava streams that were big enough to last very long. I have saved the lava effect for large bases, like walkers and fliers.
Originally, I had the black patches on the grey fatigues and plain red armour. I'm glad I switched, as the large areas of flat red colour didn't look as good.

Nice, grainy pictures or not (they look good on mobile) very striking scheme on the guardsmen. And the knight looks suitably heraldic.

Taking a break from painting. Have brought out my tank company for some servicing. Here is a squad that is getting reverted to the classic las/bolter layout: As a bonus, I thought I would show off my tank commander. I don't care how bad the rules get, this thing is in every list I make:

Being able to shoot twice makes it a little better atleast it is a cool tank though, and that's reason enough to take one.

That is more fitting for the hellhound commander with chainsword and hand flamer. For a painting update, nearly finished the 4th squad, which is the first from the second platoon. In fact, whilst the wash on them was drying I got bored and did the shadow grey fatigues on the rest of that platoon.

I was just looking at a couple of Maelstrom pics from our game in 2011 and the new scheme is very good. Did you ever paint that lovely Cold One Rough Rider squad of yours? (I can post up some nostalgia pics if you'd like)

Alas the cold ones remain unpainted. I rebased them onto round bases at one point but I have been painting things I think I'll use with priority. So pretty much infantry and russes at the moment. I did think about converting 4 of them into plasma gunners and doing some plasma pistol sergeants, to run them as 2x5 man squads. I think they could be decent support for an ambush platoon idea I am working on, which is 3xinfantry with plasma+pistol, a company commander with dagger of Tu'Sakh and a command squad with medic/banner. The idea really came from finding out medics can revive scorched plasma gunners.
I just don't see the lances working too well due to the difficulty of a 9" charge. Maybe with deathriders, but you would need a lot more than 10. If they ever get around to doing new rough riders, I may get a load and use my current ones as some sort of elite unit for them.

Working on some models. FW Hydra barrels are definitely an experience. Sat here with a cup of hot water and patience. I think I have them straight now, as long as they don't bend whilst cooling. Then just a lot of green stuff to fix a slight mould misalignment. I am planing to do something I have never done before on this Hydra: multiple exposed crewmen. With the reduced stubber prices, I'm doing a manned stubber on the hull and a tank commander on top. I just have to find suitable heads in my bits box. I don't think a crew without ear defence would last long on a Hydra.

Success! I had to go and find a really old turret hatch, with the split opening style. When I tried to use the usual Guard one, it kept impacting on the turret. I also found a gunner with a bit of a forward lean, which I thought was good. The stubber would get in the way if the turret tries to aim at ground targets and rotate, but I guess that would be why it has a -1 to hit.

Thanks. I really do like the old Hydras. I only have two though, and don't think the new ones would look very good if I try to mix them in. At least two is probably enough.

The guns look pretty similar, so you might be able to mix them with a 3rd party alternative for the middle bit to get something similar. But two is probably enough, unless you are really, really, worried about flyers.

Today I've been messing around with some colourshift blue and soul stone blue. These are the pre-fixing photos, so I still have to sort out any problems like colour bleed that these highlight. I might add some more layers of soulstone blue to the guitar front. The model is from Hasslefree's modern range. First two are with the flash on, third is without the flash. Fourth is the same angle with the flash on again.

Interesting character, he looks almost elvish.. Those paints create some really cool effects, but they are a bit more retro sci-fi than grimdark 40k. Well untill someone decides to raise a regiment of Glittorian Sparkleguard

I think that they could have some use when doing power weapons. Would have to experiment though, you would probably have to use them in a very particular way to get a nice effect.
