Hello there IGMB, here's my own paltry attempt at an Imperial Guard army. I should be blogging my current projects in an attempt to keep me motivated as I am beginning to flag, as a result of painting more figures in the last six weeks than in the preceding year.
It's not my first Guard army. In fact Imperial Guard was my first serious force, though it was a teeny tiny epic army in the early nineties that got me into the hobby. That was a plug ugly grey monstrosity with fully striped helmets (about the only visible detail on those figures was the helmet and guns after all). Since then I've widened my gaming to pretty much all corners but had always resisted a guard army as the task seemed too daunting.
Well with my circumstances changing and several months with nothing much to do stretching ahead of my I decided to give it a whirl. I've tried to do almost the whole thing with foundation paints along with black and white. I did crack in the end and use a few metallics. I also wanted to avoid metallics, as it's not something you actually see on real life soldiery these days, unless your teeth are too and you have a "shark tank" in the back of your Chimera.
I've tried for a homage to my earlier works with a grey urban scheme along with Charandon granite (I have no idea what colour that is actually supposed to be). I didn't want to break the drabness with garish stripy helmets so restricted the company colours to the right ear protector on the helmet. I've also put a trifle more effort into the basing than I normally would, experimenting with some basic plasticard shapes to make shattered tiles amongst the rubble.
I'm currently supposed to be working on the final task necessary to make the army legal, in the form of a platoon command squad. 2 plasma gunners are watching me procrastinate. I'm also working on a more complicated base for an Officio Sabatorum agent (aka Guardsman Marbo) I'll also be doing a plastic Commissar. After that a heavy weapon squad, some converted up penal legion, a sentinel and a valkyrie await me. Also have another squad still in it's wrapping and can't quite decide what to do with it.
Anyway, on with the Photos:
The first squad I completed for the army using bits left over from some Tau Human auxiliaries I converted.
my veteran squad leader and Bastonne stand in, I copped out of greenstuffing carapace armour so gave him a combat shield instead. My sgts get to have some extra attention lavished on them paint wise. They even get eyes.
Muller here as you can see has had some corners cut, though I did put a bit more effort into his demo charge. Bonus points for those who can figure out the two bits I've made the demo charge from (one bit's easy, the others most definitely not).
First infantry squad. Nothing particularly flash with this really...
My company command squad, painted ahead of schedule for a painting competition. Also contains 2 bodyguards (not pictured) they ruined the composition.
Second infantry squad, Sgt is the only thing of note here as I wanted to keep my rank and file power weapons consistent across the army but didn't want all my fellas to have mangled left arms.
So I hacked the sword off the bionic arm and added it to the standard Sgts arm and fed the cable to a converted power pack in the shoulder pad. Also shows how photography reveals all your mistakes, I often find myself tinkering with things after taking these pictures. This guy was no exception to that.
Which brings me up to the present. I should have a PCS ready for the end of the week, provided my bits order arrives on time.
Back to the plasma gunners!
