That penal legion is perfect beyond words. I simply have no clue how to describe it, except perfect.

first of all, congratulations on winning BoLS HQ contest:) i wanted to compete too, but my laziness won... then, your painting inspired me, what's really rare on this forum:) i like that your minis are clean, details are worked out, and though your minis look dark (not enough highlights for me), they look great. great ideas on conversions too, they look very realistic and effective. hope you'll keep your army up, those pennals look great, want to see whole unit of 'em:)

Glad people are liking them. The first one's head is an Empire flagellant head. The other two are Catachan ones that I've shaved the bandana from.

Ah, good detail there colonelcommisar. Where's it hail from though? I'm guessing Gav Thorpe's 13th Legion stuff. Was thinking of black and white for a scheme, but commisarial colours might help tie the army together better. It hails from Lexicanum and an E-Book i downloaded off the Internet. A normal Cadet Commissar wears the blue trim, but upon failing, its changed to Sunburst yellow,to signify the failure because its the opposite of a Cadets, and because its bright and recognisable if they choose to serve as Penal Officers, some others just choose to become Stormtroopers. And your Penal Guardsmen are coming along great, for real.

Thanks for all the positives everyone, it's helping to keep me going. Spent this week building the rest of the Penal Legion squad. Was going to go with build 2, paint 2, rinse & repeat. But as I had no chance of finishing them before I vanish on holiday for 2 weeks I figured I'd rather finish some aspect of the project before I left. Should still have time to do that rusty armour tutorial before I leave though. Have added in a few improvised weapons here and there as well as some more varied battle damage. Custodian I did pretty basically in the end. I've modelled him a Tonfa/Nightstick for disciplinary purposes. Paint scheme should make him stand out more. Glue's still wet on him so he'll need a bit of final spit, scrape and polish tomorrow.

Nice job on the cop-like custodian for your penal legionnaires! You painting him up Arbites-style?

Any tips for painting armour and cloths with just foundation paints??

Not really, Tridman, I find them pretty similar to normal paints really. The do seem slightly more prone to "beading" than normal paints, that could be due to the season though. Generally, keep them watered, use a wet pallete, don't be afraid of applying two thin coats. That and an utterly fascist attitude to mistakes and innacuracies tends to carry me through.

Hey Morat! Any news on that battered armour tutorial? Don't mean to pressure or anything, just love your stuff and would like to emulate / steal the style. You understand

The good news, it's definitely going to happen.
The bad news is I'm in France on holiday/being moquito bait and although I've bought a bit of painting to be getting on with, it ain't Penal Legion stuff.
Not back for about 2 weeks so it won't be before then I'm afraid. I've not forgotten though and will definitely have it done within 48 hours of my return.
In the -highly- unlikely event I find any Guard stuff 2nd hand in the bric-a-brac market I'm visiting tomorrow, I might be able to do it here.

Right, back from holiday and to prove I didn't -just- spend it stuffing my face with Baguettes, Beef Bourginon, Boudin Noir and Brioche, I've painted a commissar. Yes one model proving I -did- spend all my time stuffing my face with Bague-... Ahem. I've further got sidetracked painting an Epic Eldar army, that shouldn't keep me busy too long though. Epic's quick to paint for. Have tried to tie him into the rest of the army with his Trousers and boots in the regimental colours. More highly polished of course... As I took the photo I now see the right "shoulderboard" (damned if I can remember the correct name all of a sudden) is not actually in contact with the shoulder, which is a bit of an oversight. Ah well. Also need to do a bit more where the bionic eye cable meets the face. Black line is a little too substantial there. Anyone want to see my Epic Eldar?

You should definitely show us your Epic Eldar as well, especially since not many people play that game. And nice work on the commissar, its even better because its plastic!
